What is it about darkness that strikes fear in people? As far as I can remember, I've never feared it nor found a reason to. It's just dark, it can't hurt you, all that happens is just some low visibility. This fear seems obsolete to me since most places now that lights keep the night lit up until daybreak.

So tell me Escapists, why do you fear the darkness?

To alot of people, it's not really the dark that scares them - It's what creeps around in the dark.

I think it's because you can't see what's going on around them. It's fairly disorientating.

But that's the point. Nowadays, lights are just about everywhere you look. So why be scared?

You don't know what's there. It gives the feeling of being alone, and anything can come at you. It's irrational, but it's human.

Cause of whats in it. I actually prefer the dark...when I know whats in it. Though as a nerd, its usually darkness with blaring screens. I went into a cave though once (tourist trap ones, not a random one in the mountains) and they brought us to the end where it stopped cause the diggers heard like, noises coming out of the hole they were making (as the tour guide told us) then proceeded to turn off all lights. I was scared as hell (and 12 at the time)

Exactly that. It's not the dark that actually scares people...it's what hides in the dark. Bad horror-sounding, I know. But that's it. It's all about not being able to see what is right in front of you, and that makes people feel extremely vulnerable.

Lol, that's a pretty cruel joke to put on a kid.

I think it comes from instinct since the night is the time when you are most likely to be eaten. Lot`s of carnivores hunt at night.

'Cause I still half expect for
to come out of the darkness and kill me.

Edit: I just clicked to make sure I had made the link correct, and I literally wimpered...

I don't know, I'm afraid of the dark so I sleep with the T.V on, I don't know what it is about the dark I don't why I'm afraid but I am. Maybe it goes back to the times were we used to live in caves past down in the genes, the dark would be a perfectly natural thing to be afraid of back then as there could be predators stalking in the darkness. Maybe... maybe not I'm not a scientist and I'm not %100 on how genes work but it may explain why I always feel as if I'm being watched in the dark.

People don't fear the dark, they fear what might lurk in the dark. The dark is an unknown where any foul cruel beast might lurk. Humans fear the unknown because of its potential to be dangerous.

People aren't afraid of the dark generally, instead they are afraid of what might be lurking just out of sight and shrouded in darkness. Because our primary sense is crippled in the dark, we are free to imagine any number of things waiting beyond the edge of our vision. In short, darkness places us alone with our doubts and our subconcious - and both can conjure up powerful demons, and our reduced sensory state means our natual defenses are compromised.

Maybe it's because people have grown to relly(sp?) on modern lights, so without them, they get shoved out of their comfort zone and freak out. Seems like a possibility is all I'm saying.
