Lot of hype for new valve news, hl3 or l4d3 likely to be announced.

Weve waites years for hl3 and itd all be wasted if hl3 came out. Sure some dramatic changes happened in 2006-2010 for gaming tech but its since become stagnant and i really doubt id be blown away if it released on modern tech.

L4d3 would be perfect atm. Esports expanding, it can have pooled console and pc userbase, host in client pickup games, tournies and ladders, and valve could easilly give it occasional updates on the side of their other games.

Where did you hear about this? I need to watch it like a hawk, in case it turns out to be the prodigal franchise after all.

I wouldn't get my hopes up. Even if it's announced...4 years until release? 5?

People still care about Half Life?

My love for the series died years ago when Valve decided that giving us an ending to their "Empire Strikes Back" moment was just too much damn work for them.

The narrative is just there imo. Its interesting and justifies cool sets, areas, enemies and lighting effects. The story itself is mediocre on its own though.

Half life games better serve as tech demos imo and I personnally wanna see dynamic liqued in the next installment

This is the closest thing I could find. "A Half Life 3 string was found in Dota 2 tools". Sounds about as crackpot as any other "proof".

At this point I would only want a new Half-Life game so we can have a great Team Fortress 3, Left 4 Dead 3 and Portal 3. Half-Life 2 was basically the beta for TF2 and the Left 4 Dead and Portal games where it itself was a mechanically tight but kinda hollow game.

I doubt that this news will bear any fruit.

I want to see HL3, more then anything else in gaming.

I also don't believe we ever will. All we have is a vague promise from 2007ish when the orange box was released. Portal 2 teased it a little but that was still years ago. Not a peep from valve since then.

Which leads to two possibilities.

1.)Valve has been working on it all this time and they're very good at saying nothing about it(no leaks, nothing). If this is the case, I have a dim(very dim hope) that it's going to be the launch game for Source2.

2.)Valve either never started on it or abandoned it long ago, knowing the game will never live up to the hype. I consider this much more likely.

Besides, lately I've been more interested in when we're gonna get the last two episodes to Kentucky Route Zero(whose creators are still active, occasionally putting out side project tied in with the game) or the 2nd half of Broken Age(which occasionally puts out a "It's not done yet" message).

I cringed anyway. I'm sorry, but this is not news. All the evidence in the video that OMG! HALF LIFE 3 CONFIRMED! was very specifically that it hadn't been confirmed. Valve hasn't mentioned a thing and the guy in the video is interpreting that as meaningful.

By that logic, why not just report that Valve and Nintendo are going to merge? Or that Steam is shutting down, or turning into a porn site? Or that Valve is working with the NSA to steal my grandmother's secret meatloaf recipe. Now Valve didn't say any of that, but hey, what else could not announcing anything mean?!

I did cringe. Here is a summary of the video:
"A Valve employee is going to give a talk, but they've not announced what it is about. Therefore, most likely it's Half-Life 3".

Maybe, they will drop hints or a full blown reveal at GDC. They are apparently finishing up the Source 2 engine. Half-Life has always been their glorified tech demos for their engines and game making/storytelling techniques, with a sort of decent narrative tacked on. HL2's episodes were even a way to tell if Valve Time could be defeated. (That answer is no.) What better way to try and sell Steam VR and the controller and get other devs to try Source 2 than with the most wanted PC game all time?

I don't care if it ever comes out, though (except for the fact that HL fans will be too busy playing it to go "Half-Life 3 confirmed" on any piece of Valve news). I agree that they were technically groundbreaking for their times, but other titles have gone past them, especially in the story. Valve might really be too scared to make it and see a backlash form it not blowing everything else out of the water.

You've just given me a terrible vision of Valve and Nintendo collaborating to make Team Fortress 2 and DotA2 Amiibo and cross-promotional DLC. I shudder at the amount of physical hats they would sell.

It is confirmed that they will be at GDC, the rest is speculation which is something Valve fans are gods at.

I saw the video you posted. It's just some guy wishfully interpreting the silence of one Valve employee. All that is known is that they will reveal something at GDC. For all we know it'll be a new hat for Team Fortress.

It's very hard to stay hopeful after all this time, but if that's what you want to do, there's nothing wrong with that. Even though It's really unlikely, don't let the naysayers get you down. Sure, there's nothing but speculation right now, but that's half the fun, in my opinion. Even if it never happens, It's comforting to think that there's something really good on the horizon, keeps you excited and fired up.

Honestly, the only way I think we'll ever see a Half Life 3 is for fans to lower their expectations. Of course the devs don't want to suffer under the pressure of impossible expectations for several years, nobody would. The best thing you can do is encourage people to think of it as the next installment of a good series, and not the impossibly amazing thing everyone thinks it should be.

Valve are in a really shitty position as it stands. There are 3 outcomes to this, and two of them are bad.

1 - Half Life 3 is released, and it is as good as everybody wanted it to be. This is unfortunately the least likely.
2 - Half Life 3 is released, and everybody is disappointed. This game has been in development hell for 10 years after all. Nothing comes out of that without a dangerous level of unrealistic hype.
3 - Half Life 3 is never released. Valve knows that Half Life 3 will never live up to expectations, so they decided not to release a disappointing product. Smart move, Valve.

Half Life 3 is going to disappoint people when it is released. No matter what it does those years of waiting, hoping, and anticipation will sour its taste more than poor gameplay ever could. Half Life and HL2 were revolutionary back in their days, each one changed its genre in some significant way and parts of them were still being copied by games until a couple of years ago. To match that impact, HL3 would have to usher in the next stage of its kind and I don't know how they're going to do that. Granted I've never sat down and considered what the next big advancement is going to be that HL3 could pioneer, but I really don't see what they can do that's new and so brilliant it hasn't been properly done before.

You can say good move Valve for never releasing HL3 because it'll never live up to the hype, but Half Life needs that closure or it'll always be the unanswered question. I know Valve seem less and less interested in actually making games these days, but they could at least make their fans aware of any progress (or none) on the HL3 front.

Valve have access to one of the best gameplay testing grounds in gaming, lots of indie games are released on Steam every month with new game mechanics and innovations. Could they monitor those for potential things to use in HL3? Obviously they'd have to fairly compensate the creators but they have access to this resource, use it Valve!

It's mostly speculation.

Some of it stems from references to Half-Life 3 code in a new Dota 2 tools update, and a few other places over the past few months.

Some of it also stems from Valve's announced GDC presence and some hints at a large Source 2 presence.

http://www.valvetime.net/threads/valves-gdc-2015-announcement.245755/

Truth be told, it's not likely to happen. A reveal could actually happen this year, just not at GDC. They already have a lot on their plate for the show, including (but not limited to) the final design for the Steam controller, the final reveal of the Steam Machines and the rest of the Steam Universe, and finally some unannounced 'living room hardware' and their own, in-house VR tech. Not to mention their numerous speeches and private conferences.

I really don't foresee a game reveal. Even so, I'm really excited to see what comes out of GDC.

See above. They're reportedly going to reveal quite a bit, but most of it is Steam Universe and VR related, with the possibility of a Source 2 reveal.

But as I'd said, probably not a game.
