You should try including more content in your post. Explain why you like each movie.

1) The Scorpion King 3. It's objectively the best movie ever, so I'm not even going to both explaining it. :p
2) Three Colors: Red. A great "anti-romance," and a perfect finale to a great trilogy.
3) Snow Angels. Still the most emotional film I've ever seen.
4) Inglourious Basterds/Kill Bill/Pulp Fiction. I still can't decide which Tarantino flick I like the most, so I'm just going to put them all together. One of them would be in that spot.
5) Apocalypse Now. Just a great movie. Expertly made, strong emotional payoff, and a haunting portrayal of war.

Spots 2-5 vary given the day. :p

1. The Rob Zombie Halloween remake. Brilliantly done, greatest story ever told.
2. The Simpsons Movie. Best animated movie hands down. Great action and comedy.
3. Red Dawn the new one. Chris Hemsworth's best performance yet, and the supporting cast was sublime
4. Jennifer's Body. Greatest performance I've ever seen with female leads.
5. Green Lantern. I just really loved this movie.

I'm going to try and restrict myself to one film per genre. Try. In no particular order, here are my top five favourite films.

"We're people, do you understand?"

Sorry 2001, Alien/s and all the other science fiction films I like, but Moon comes out on top for me. It's a story about Sam Bell, played by Sam Rockwell, whom with his robot assistant, voiced by Kevin Spacey, runs a space station and collects minerals which meet the Earth's resource needs. He is reaching the end of his term with the company Lunar Industries when he makes a discovery...

This film comes out on top for me because of Sam Rockwell's amazing performance as Sam. Sam Rockwell pulls off playing a frustrated and tormented man who just wants to go home and meet his family after being more or less alone for three years on the moon with conviction and more. I didn't know much about Sam Rockwell before seeing this film but after it, he is definitely one of my favourite actors.
"This time the mission is the man."

As much as I loved Full Metal Jacket, I enjoyed this film better. It's about a handpicked squad, lead by Captain Miller, played by Tom Hanks, whom are searching for Private Ryan, the youngest and last of the Ryan brothers. It is set in WW2 and starts off on D-Day, portraying the beach landings of Normandy in quite possibly the most grizzly historical battle scene ever shot on film.

I like this film so much because of the sense of camaraderie shared between the squad and the members themselves. Although they do fill in the stereotypical roles in a squad in a war film, I ended up liking and sympathizing with each and every one of them because of their humanity. They are believable characters that have their own flaws, quirks and traits as unique people. They're normal people, just like you and me.
"As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster."

Out of the crime/mafia films I've seen, not that many actually, Goodfellas is my favourite. Based on a true story, it's about Henry Hill, played by Ray Liotta, and his rise and fall as a wiseguy of the mafia. From when he was a young kid, to when he was almost a senior. Also starring in the film as suppourting characters are Tommy Devito, played by Joe Pesci, and Jimmy Conway, played by Robert De Niro. The film follows no strict plot, it simply revolves around the lives of these characters. This, only adds to the experience.

Unlike the films I mentioned above, I picked this film because it was entertaining. It shows the life of the working class gangster, and many others, as it is. While it may seen to be glorifying the gangster life, it has a fairly blunt view on it, showing it 'as it is.' It shows the good, the bad and the ugly without making a compromise. It isn't afraid to show the straight-up disgusting moments either, and even in those scenes it is treated like every other event.

Of course I can't write a post on Goodfellas without mentiong Joe Pesci whom undoubtedly stole every scene he was He nails the sadistic, sociopathic gangster and often he shows the darker side of the life of a mafiosi.
""What happened to the American Dream?" It came true! You're lookin' at it!"

It was difficult choosing a quote to represent the feel of Watchmen, but in the end I chose this one because loss of innocence is one of the major themes. Watchmen, based on the outstanding graphic novel of the same name by Alan Moore and David Gibbons, revolves around a vigilante group called the Watchmen and the events that aspire when one of their members is murdered. It is set in an alternate 1960s where superheroes are real and outlawed with exception to those working for the American government.

One paragraph cannot do this film justice so I simply ask you to read the graphic novel, then watch the film. The characters, the themes, the music -yes the music!- is just incredible.

Okay this is only four but that's all I can write a solid answer to think of right now.

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey - an incredibly dense work of art. Every time I see this film I get something more out of it; it changed the way I watch movies and my perceptions about what movies could be.

2. The Social Network - David Fincher's best film. (Yes, better than Fight Club) A wonderful script combined with great performances and my favorite soundtrack of any film.

3. Adaptation - I knew from the very first opening monologue that I was going to love this movie. This simple story about an insecure writer quickly turns into one of the most interesting meta films I've ever seen. And, you know, Charlie Kaufman.

4. Princess Mononoke - It feels really predictable having a Hayao Miyazaki film on the list, but I can't deny that this movie is a beautifully creative behemoth and the animation is some of (if not the best) I've ever seen.

5. The Dark Knight - I almost don't want to have this on here, but at the same time, this movie is so goddamn engaging without making the audience feel stupid, and yes, Heath Ledger's Joker is one of the best performances I've ever seen. It's the comic book movie I've always wanted.

Honorable mentions:

Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
Pulp Fiction
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
Se7en
Fight Club
Boogie Nights
Taxi Driver
The Kid

Note that most of these movies are visually or metaphorically intricate, often inappropriately funny and somewhat sporadic. This is due to my fucked brain. If you have a fucked brain; WATCH THESE MOVIES!

1) Bunraku - A type of Japanese theater based around origami. Not only does the movie stay faithful to that, but it is also incredibly submerged in irony and it languishes in it.
2) The Tarantino movie - We all know "That Tarantino Movie", enough said.
3) Apocalypse Now - Because fuck life.
4) Drive - A short unassuming mood piece which nicely simulates the effect of some martian drug. Watch while sleep deprived.
5) Immortals. Uhhh... It has Zeus in a fetish outfit pulling down a mountain to crush an army of Titans? It's like a stylized 300, and yes I meant to say that.

I often ask this question to some people.

1. Inception (I love nearly everything about this movie, the story, the characters, and the music.)

2. Batman the Dark Knight (It has a lot of flaws like that thing between Bruce and Maggie's character I think was poorly executed but still awesome sauce. Avengers is great and fun, but for me will never reach the same level of depth that Nolan gave to Dark Knight)

3. Casino or Goodfellas (I can't decide which of these two movies I like more.)

4. 13 Assassins (One of the few Japanese films I like)

5. Home Alone 2 (First movie I have ever watched at the cinemas, its a bit of an unfair answer since this isn't strictly one the bests, it's just one of the really good ones. I just want it to have a place on my list)

This isn't 100%, just what I've seen the most often.

5) Titanic - Unfortunately it's not popular here, but this film has every thing, and it does most of it really well. Plus most of you would know of the 7 memorable scenes that came out it, and they're not memorable by accident either. Can't make them like that any more. I don't know why but there hasn't been any thing close since The Return Of The King.

4) Poltergeist - Most reviews I read about this made it sound so average, but even though it wasn't the scariest, it was fucking well done. It starts of well and suddenly becomes incredible when the poltergeist appears, with amazing scene after amazing scene. I can't believe how dramatic the ending became, now that's how you panic. Can't make them like that any more. And I bet if they tried, they would whore the special effects.

3) Indiana Jones: Raiders Of The Lost Arc - Fun, fast, funny, some what original, some amazing experiences and packs a punch at the end. This is what a perfect film looks like. Can't make them like that any more, since it requires common sense.

2) Fantasia 1940 - The greatest of animation to go with some amazing classic music, but it's the idea's that make this a masterpiece. Can't make them like that any more, probably cause they should be hiring more talented people instead of dumb asses that look pretty and only aim for the money.

1) 2001: A Space Odyssey - Honestly, I find most of it boring except the first 30 minutes and the last 30 minutes. The stargate scene and the end is the best I've seen out of all. Can't make them like that any more, but they should be fucking trying!

Hmmm... I always have a lot of trouble picking a top (insert number here), since it changes regularly and I'm really picky about what I consider a good film... which is different from films I enjoy, since there are plenty of awesome films that I cannot enjoy (but being the pseudo-masochist that I am, I'll watch them anyway). So, pick of the moment, away!

Inception - cerebral, awesome soundtrack, well cast and every actor got their parts to a tee. Aside from not explaining the whole dreaming concept, I have nothing bad to say about this film at all...

Tora! Tora! Tora! - erm... I really don't know what to say about this... but it's a brilliant film and all WWII buffs should go watch and just try to pick holes in it (admittedly, you can, but it's damned hard compared to virtually every other WWII film out there).

Moon - what a directoral debut! Piece of big-screen genius, if you ask me. Sci-fi at it's best.

Ben Hurr - ultimate swords'n'sandals revenge movie. Some of the best cinematic setpieces ever crafted and Stephen Boyd was brilliant as Messalla.

... fuck, I'm struggling here... :/

Before Sunset - 'cos why not?! -_-

For me there's a big difference between 'the best movies' and 'favourite movies'. I think 2001: A Space Odyssey is one of if not the best movie ever made, but that doesn't make it an easy watch though. And my favourite movies are the ones I love watching no matter how many times I've seen them.

So with that out of the way...

1) Ghostbusters
2) The Incredibles
3) My Neighbor Totoro
4) Lord of the Rings
5) Coming to America

This list is in constant flux, by the way.

5 of my favorites:

1. District 9 - considerably less preachy then Avatar, AND is has guns that can blow people up!
2. The A-Team - Some people give this movie a hard time, but I think it's a fun ride from start to finish.
3. Back to the Future - The whole, trilogy really.
4. Scott Pilgrim VS The World - Hell yeah! An interesting story, cool action scenes and great special effects, what's not to like?
5. Princess Mononoke - A Miyazaki classic that doesn't go into straight "good or evil" territory story-wise. something I really appreciate.

...This should give you an idea of the kinds of movies I'm into...

EDIT: Hell, here's 5 more-
Ghostbusters
The Avengers
Fight Club
Megamind
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
