First off i would like to say that i hate torrents, they are immoral and illegal. But more and more people use them, but why? So many of my friends use them and it just f**ks me off big time; espically when they try and get me to use them as well. Why can't you just go out and buy the damn thing with money, it helps the artist/develper ect contine what they do so why deprive them of the income that they deserve?

So fellow escapists, do you use torrents? if so why do you use them?

If it was actually used for the legal practices that many pirates use in "defense" of torrent sites, I'd have no issues with them. Sadly, they are not. And are just hot-beds for piracy.

This would be totally fine with me.

Ah..torrents as in medium of transfer are actually incredibly useful.

Torrents as in pirating? Well this site is very anti-piracy.

As for me, no. Don't use them to pirate but I do transfer private data through them.

Because where the hell am I going to get a copy of an 11 year-old game that's been out-of-print for over half that time, was never released outside Japan, and is only available in the form of one used copy costing over $300?

Torrents and P2P is not illegal pirating is. There is plenty of freeware and shareware that is much easier and cheaper for owners to share thanks to Torrents. Many of them are microtransaction MMOs but there is also games like Daggerfall the Bethesda has made freeware. So why I use torrents for freeware and share not for pirating which gives torrents a bad name. For transfer of data they really are kick ass. Free to put stuff up and you only need 1 host out of everyone who downloaded it active unless they delete torrent.

So anyway just to restate Torrents and P2P for freeware and shareware fine when used for pirating bad.

You people need to lay of the pirate kool-aid and read up what torrents actually are.
To give you a quick lesson, it's a transfer protocol where payload is distributed thus not relying on a server, probably the most effective way of transferring large chunks of data.

As for what you do with them, well that's up to you.
Ya I use them, these is no shortage of open source OS'es and handy software to be found.

Wait, what? bittorrent is just a means of transferring files. It's actually very useful for mass distribution of content. For instance, I download video game remixes from www.ocremix.org . Occasionally, they put together an album. You can download the individual mp3s from the site, or you can use bittorent to get the album in a lossless format, along with all the artwork. Additionally, if you are just getting into the site, rather than chew up the site's bandwidth with mass downloads, you can download a few torrents of the archives.

Pirating = bad
Bittorrent = tool

Pretty much my sentiment. If the publisher can't be arsed to publish their games anywhere within ten thousand miles of me or in a language I can realistically work with, then I can only assume they don't even want my money.

So from what I can gather, you're angry because you have a skewed version of what torrents actually are and are lashing out at everybody who uses them.

I use them and fucking love them. :p They also have several benefits to standard downloads. :p

The difference being, I only use them for legal purposes.

Case and point, for the Humble Indie Bundle 2. Once I bought the bundle, I could choose between a standard download, or torrent. The torrent was very well seeded so it took about a minute or three for Cortex Command to finish. :p

See OP, you are against torrents because there are people that use them for Piracy. There are many legal things for download using torrents. :/

If anything, many indie music artists and filmmakers use torrents to distribute their work freely without paying for a massive bandwidth bill by hosting the files off of a site and the speed, if the torrent is well seeded or if those there have fast upload speeds, is as fast as your download speed is. :p

So... yeah. I like them. :/

EDIT: And OP, no they are not.

This like saying guns are bad. They aren't evil. In the right hands they are very practical. In the wrong hands they can hurt someone. Torrents aren't the reason for piracy, the internet is. So the title should read "Internet, Why??"

This.

Like many other aspects of Society, don't equate the illegal things done with software with the software itself.

Why would someone bag something for free with little chance of comeuppance when they could pay for it instead...hmm.

Obviously a difficult question for the ages, that one.

Everyone said what I was going to say better than I did I think. Stupid ninjas.
Torrents are not inherently wrong. Not everything online has a legal or physical copy to be obtained. Torrents are an efficient way to transfer files to or from another computer. Yes, they can be used for pirating, but that is not the fault of the tool. That is the fault of the pirates. We don't outlaw cars because they can be used to transport drugs, my school doesn't disallow the use of backpacks because they can be used to sneak alcohol into the dorms, and we don't outlaw a file transfer system because it can be used to illegally share data.

There are a hell of a lot of legal things I use torrents for. They're a really good way to download large amounts of data very quickly, which is very handy a lot of the time. So yes, I use torrents. Other than that, there's not much I use them for. I don't torrent illegally anymore, I did when I was young but I grew out of that/learned to stream.

It seems to me that you're really asking `why do people pirate'. People pirate for many reasons. I used to pirate because I didn't want to give the artists money they didn't deserve by buying products before I knew what they were (then I found Youtube and Megavideo so I don't need torrenting for that purpose anymore). Other people do it because they're cheap, or because they just don't have enough money at the moment. Most pirates buy it later if they like something they pirated, very few of them are actually soulless moral-less bastards (at least, out of the ones I know anyway). Actually, illegal torrenting can be a good thing. Pirates try things out a lot more often than non-pirates do, because it's free to them, and then of course pirates are going to tell their friends if they like something so pirating actually increases sales, in a lot of ways. Don't be so quick to judge.

I guess Blizzard and Valve are a bunch of thieving criminal pirates then, and should be sent to jail!

Oh, wait ...

I use torrents when I update(ed) WoW and AoC (pretty much every MMO out there) and games from Steam. Also, I download stuff I can't get my hands on (out of print, etc).

Torrenting is not bad!

Piracy is what you mean, torrents are just files. Very useful files for distribution of packages of information. They just happen to be the best way of pirating things as well.

I had to call you out on this one because it really pisses me off when people think and say that torrents are inherently bad. They're a great innovation in file transferring and they really get a terrible reputation because of a misrepresented issue.
