Is it just me, or are the historical battles in any Total War game preposterously difficult? I've had this problem since Rome Total War... I'm a rather passionate lover of history, and not a bad tactician if I do say so myself, but the battles, even on easy, are nearly impossible. After playing the Shogun 2 demo, I realized, as I was being rushed at and betrayed by countless hordes of enemies and former allies, that I was not having fun... It is enjoyable to wield massive armies and conquer opponents, but it is not enjoyable to face an army double your size, and, in the case of Shogun 2, all the while being completely unable to re-position them before the battle. Anybody else feel the same way? Hopefully the main campaign will continue to be as good as the other TW games, because the historical battles are, in my opinion, awful.

I suppose you have to think 'Right...I'm going to lose this, but how I lose it is entirely up to me'
And then, if you do pull a win out, you feel fantastic.

I'm pretty sure thats how any war is supposde to seem. it wouldnt be fun if you had the 5-1 advantage.

I'v beaten many historic battles, even when extremely outnumbered, by outflanking and outmoving the enemy.
Computer AI tend to fail on such basic tactics, so keep working on moving your cavalry into flanking, etc.

This is how I'd see it as well.

Some of them are impossibly hard, but then, that's why they lost. If it was easy, they would have lost.

That said, I managed to win at Hastings on M2:TW.

well many of the historical battles I had a problem with....how the battle went historically? yeah...your team loses. There's a -reason- your team lost >.> So I don't feel too bad, I find them kind of like the supposed to lose fights in RPGs. However, when you do pull a win out of your ass by doing something so completely nonsensical and insane that it works. That's when I feel amazing. (CTRL+A -> Double right click enemy.)

They are supposed to be difficult.

How else would they be fun? They are historical battles, if you could just fight it EXACTLY like it was actually fought, I don't see where the fun factor comes in for actually PLAYING the game. They are setup as best as they can be to allow a good historical context of the battle but to allow you to play the fight out your own way. And if they make that semi-difficult, then you might actually have to try! Go figure.
