I call the elf! I've always liked their swords. Nit-pick time: I was under the impression that magic didn't work that way in Lord of the Rings, and that only a few special people could use it. There's a reason there are only five wizards in all of Middle-Earth. Then again, I suppose they needed a third class. Oh well. Still looking forward to this one.

I admit, it looks interesting and prob. has some nice co-op. But it isn't my style of games of "Day 1 Pre-order"; maybe if it's on special on steam though...

If I recall correctly, Gandalf, Saruman, Sauron etc are all "angels" and elves can use magic too because they're some kind of distant descendants/relatives of angels.

Don't quote me on this though, I read it years ago so I'm not too sure how accurate it is.

Sounds like a job for a nerd! Or google! Or a combination of the two. Anyhow, the way I understand it is that a lot of the stuff that we might consider magic in Middle-Earth is just normal every day crap. It's like our use of electricity basically. It's nothing special. For example, Legolas can " said to have far greater senses than most other non-elven living beings, capable of seeing and hearing at far greater scales than men could, while capable of resting his mind (equivalent to human sleeping) even while physically walking, while Glorfindel was able to ease the severity of Frodo's cursed wound through mere physical contact and urge his white elf-horse on at high speed with words in his tongue."

For the full article just go to this link. http://lotr.wikia.com/wiki/%22Magic%22_in_Middle-Earth

Anyhow, I really want to like this game. I loved the Lord of the Rings games when I was younger. They just picked a really bad time to release this game for me. I'll probably pick it up as a used copy if its any good.

I hope it's good, it's been far too long since I last went into Middle Earth. Does anyone know if that Co-op is going to be split screen or online only?

Correct. Magic is more often implied in the world Tolkien created and there are very few displays of explicit or active magic. One of the few is the Ring turning the wearer invisible, Gandalf setting the hill on fire (The Hobbit), Gandalf's binding spell on the door being shattered by the Balrog, Gandalf. As someone who has extensively explored Middle-Earth lore, the mage appearing in the trailer would be considered extremely unlikely but not impossible. Although I must add that there are no "wizards" in the LoTR--they are known as the Istari, they are 5 number, only 3 are mentioned and 2 actually observed. Their real names are not known.

OT: I'm still waiting for a mind-blowing LoTR game. The only noteworthy games I played were the Battle for Middle-earth series and LoTR: Conquest. I don't think this one will be any different; sure, it might feature impressive visuals, a passable story, engaging gameplay, but it still won't be good enough for me.

Ah...the eternal quest for a mind-blowing LoTR game for a LoTR fanboy/girl. If only Peter Jackson developed games eh?

Anyways, in regards to LoTR: Conquest. I heard is was insanely short and when you got to play as the scout class (or whichever one could go invisible and sneak around) it became even more short. Is that true or...?

Also, did you ever play the LoTR: Battle for Middle Earth? I think that may have been my favorite LoTR game.

Annnd just out of curiosity, did you ever try and learn Elvish too? Cause um...I did. I'm not sure if it's something to be proud of or not though...

Yeah, I did, sorry I didn't make that clear in my post. I wrote "Middle for Middle Earth" Proofreading is useful, I guess.

Yeah, those two were pretty decent, and Battle for Middle Earth II was surprisingly good on the 360.

Also, I did draw the line at learning Elfish--most people forget that Tolkien twisted the English language like that. They might have edited that out in the American edition of the books though.

Really only like 50 orks and 3 trolls guarding that fortress with no archers??
Well... they should be able hold of three attackers without any siege weaponry. In the north, it seems, conflict is less than epic.

Positives, we had none of the third-age not-Aragorn not-Gimli rubbish. It still makes sense to have a multi-racial team because the big powers around this area are dwarves, elves and rangers. Giving the dwarf a crossbow was (although I guess it doesn't make a huge amount of cultural sense) a nice touch just because it's not what we expect from, say, Gimli.

I'm still on the fence with this one

You guys didn't like the hack 'n slash games? I know nothing was going on in terms of story but they had atmosphere, setting a playability down to an incredible level, particularly the two towers.

conquest was worthless. a amazing idea, but really bad execution. the battle of middle earth games were great. and the hack-and-slashes which were released with the movies were the greatest direct movie adapdation game i ever played.

what i love about this trailer is that even though ieach race has is onw class, they never have the same playstyle in the trailers. you can make the dwarf warrior focus on archery. and you can make the elf mage a magical direct fighter. i'm really looking forward to this.

Well the CG company they outsourced this too did an awesome job, but there is absolutely nothing of the actual game in there.
If they can give us a good RPG I will be all over that shit, ofcourse sofar LoTR games were only shit.
