Hello Escapees,

I was lucky enough to receive my beta key for the new game in the Tribes series - 'Tribes: Ascend'.

I loved the original game and am really enjoying what I've played so far of this new edition.

I am wondering if any other people have played it. If so, what are your thoughts? What can be improved/changed before the official release? Discuss :)

For those of you who don't know, Tribes: Ascend is a free to play online multiplayer game featuring team deathmatch, ctf and a host of other varities. Players are equipped with a jetpack to glide around the large maps on offer but can also use vehicles to get around. Players can use various items, including turrets and an array of backpacks to enhance their character.

If anyone is interested in playing head to the link below, it's fun!

It's really quite good, I've never played Tribes before, but I really enjoyed the beta a bit and spent a bit of money on it. My only real complaint is that it costs so much XP to unlock weapons and perks. I realize that want people to buy gold, but some weapons you have to play 100 matches fairly decently to get enough XP to unlock, and the XP system in the game is weird as hell.

It's awesome, when I can get it to work. :<

There's something with my rig that doesn't jive with it, though. So since I got my key ~2 weeks ago, I've only played one complete match.

I load up the launcher every now & again hoping a new patch is live, and that this magical patch fixes whatever it is that's ailing me. :p

Seems fundamentally flawed in my honest opinion.

You spend ages just chewing through all your ammo hoping you get lucky enough to land a hit and kill the enemy.

When you run out of jetpack juice you're left to helplessly flop up and down on the battlefield until it recharges.

I just think it comes down to luck almost all the time, unless of course you play it enough to develop any kind of technique other than "SHOOT AT GROUND NEAR ENEMY!"

That's harsh. Do you have an AMD processor. The reason I ask is that when I installed the beta it tried to install an AMD Dual Core optimizer, apparently to help those with AMD chips.

Other than that I guess you'll just have to wait for a patch or the official release.

Yeah I gotta say, having played the original Tribes loads, there is definitely some skill involved in knowing where someone is going to be, and gliding across the landscape.

I totally agree, they need to sort out the XP/Gold system. I understand the developers need some money, and they deserve some for making a great game, but I totally agree that items and perks should cost a lot less XP.

As with all these games where you can buy weapons, the people who spend the most money have an immediate advantage, but those who slog through the XP route have to take a beating before they get the good stuff!

I think original Tribes players won't like having full access to all the loadouts early on in playing the game.

It's pretty fucking amazing. The jetpack and skiing mechanics are very enjoyable, the mobility dovetails excellently with the combat, you have a lot of tactical flexibility, and the dev team is incredibly responsive. The system requirements are pretty steep due to a lot of the optimization not happening yet, but I got playable FPS on my toasterlaptop with some .ini tweaks. All in all highly recommend it.

Nope. :|

CPU: Intel Dual Core 3.0GHz
Video Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 ti
RAM: 8Gs. It isn't DDR2 or anything, just kinda basic.

I've rarely had issues with games I play, so the fact that Tribes is being difficult isn't a big deal. I just hope whatever optimizations Hi-Rez need to make get made soon. I really wanna unlock Doombringer. :3

My thoughts? I'm jealous. Tribes is hardcore, totally hardcore, it was always too hardcore for me. I'm still looking forward to Ascend because I do enjoy fast paced games, and there is nothing faster than Tribes.
