So I was in a thread earlier, where I accused the OP of trolling. Several members of the community felt I was wrong in my accusation and suggested that I was ill-informed as to the nature of trolling. So my question to you Escapists is, what do you believe constitutes trolling?

-Constant harassing
-Making bad meme jokes in hopes to anger OP
-Disagreeing for the sake of disagreeing with no real reason as to disagree other than angering everyone.
-Spamming.

That's all I can think of

Posting a comment designed specifically to make some users of the forum react (preferably intensly) to it.

Trolling is subverting the true nature of the thread with any kind of post (negative in nature or otherwise) for the purpose of a negative response or large reaction.

well, i think you were correct. i'm 95% certain the individual you are referring to was trolling. but... that's because i'm also familiar with an older, less commonly used definition, which is playing stupid/asking an incredibly stupid question just to see how many bites you'll get. granted, i'd have to say that those kinds of trolls are at least less offensive than what most people commonly consider trolls nowadays.

i.e. even though i still consider it trolling, i'd much rather read a painfully, blatantly disingenuously stupid question than some a**hole spouting hate.

Mostly when someone intentionally says something stupid so as to bait. Though if they have a really good reason to back it up or at least a reason that could be on some thought level considerable then its just someone being abrasive.

Essentially, the psychological processes behind this:

Step 1: Go to youtube
Step 2: Go to a Metallica video
Step 3: Type in: "dave Mustainne is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!! eh tottaly ownnzzz metllica!!! you all suck [profanities]!!!!"
Step 4: Wait for reaction

The thought process that goes on behind this, which is obvious, is the basic premise of trolling. It is harder to describe in words, but you probably understand by now.

Well I think of trolling as saying something to purposefully rile someone up. Sure there are times when you can't tell if the person really means what they're saying or if they're just trolling, but saying someone's trolling simply because you don't agree with what they posted comes off as very close-minded.

And OP (we call you OP because you are the original poster :p) I do think you kinda jumped to conclusions there with the OP of the previous thread. Sure he was pretending not to know, but it wasn't to get people angry, it was just for a joke. How funny the joke is depends upon the person, but I feign ignorance all the time in the name of humor. I mean he didn't come on saying "Why isn't it okay to kill the homeless and use them as food?" He was just trying to come off as a noob for the sake of humor.

Although if you include "Acting dumb for the sake of getting responses, any responses" then yeah I guess he was joking. Although now we have a difference in definitions which can cause all sorts of problems.

more specificly(sic) a NEGATIVE response.
I don't think it needs to be negative. For example, mentioning the finger box, or triforcing can be considered trolling, because you get people who aren't in on it to respond in a way that exposes them as such.

Help me capture this one for live study!

OT: Flaming, posting offensive of overly gorey videos/images, basicly stuff that is against the social contract.

Trololololo~ lololo~ lololo~ ahahahaaaa~ aaah~

Trolling is being a negative ass for the sake of being a negative ass. For example : 'Fake and gay'. The only reason somebody would say that in such a terribly negative manner would be to get a response in a hopefully equal negative manner so they can revert back to being the nice guy and making the responding person look like a megajerk.

Anything to provoke a reaction in any way.

For example (conversation between myself and a friend earlier):

Myself(Trolling):Dude that's not a bison

Friend:>_>
it is
that is a bison
and the latter is a buffalo
I know, I've looked into this
:L

Myself:That's not a fucking bison man

Friend:...FUCK OFF TROLL

Clearly you can see how he thought I was trolling. Even though I was using that conversation as an excuse to post an image of M.Bison from Street Fighter.
