I think you should stop making excuses for, and feeling responsible for, your terrible housemate. Prioritise yourself. Stick out the two months and then run like hell. I'm sure you wish the guy all the best for he future, but he isn't your responsibility. He does something stupid? His own damn fault. Get him to own his actions for once; pussyfooting around him hasn't made it better for anybody, by the sounds of it.

Accommodating someone who has been leveling abuse at your partner is not something that should even be considered. I get that he's mentally ill, and being mentally ill sucks, but it doesn't mean you're not responsible for your actions.

Also when you say he might "do something awful" are you afraid for his safety, or your own safety? If it's the former there's nothing you can do except encourage him to seek professional help. It's not your responsibility or your business. If it's the latter you can call the police if he gets out of hand, and probably carry protection like a stun gun or pepper spray if that's legal where you live.
