Trying to find old turn based games

I used to play this game maybe 80's - 90's

- start with a town
- everything is blacked out
- build infantry, tanks, transports, subs, battleships, fighters, bombers ....
- start by building a tank or infantry
- go and take over other towns to expand
- fight against computer opponents
- map had water or land, not sure about trees or mountains
- you could load up the transports with maybe 6 infantry or 2 tanks to attack towns over water
- enemy location was unknown unless you could see them with your units

Hours of fun and would like to find and play again.

I'm not sure but it sounds quite similar to Advance Wars, here is the Wikipedia page which has a list of all the games in that series so perhaps what you're looking for is part of it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wars_(series)

Even if not, maybe the game you are looking for inspired/was inspired by Advance Wars so its not a bad place to start looking, hope I could help!
