Jan-24-2012 - I Love Twisted Metal
Twisted Metal Marathon:
Jan-26-2012 – Games of Vehicular Mayhem
Feb-02-2012 – All Things Sweet Tooth
Feb-09-2012 - Top 10 Endings
Spoilers
Well folks, we’ve gone so far (and I’ve labored for so long) and finally, just before we drive to kill, to attain, to relive, this is where it ends. Twisted Metal is very well known for its twist endings; they’re well beyond modern storytelling in even today’s games.
Rules:
-1 ending per character
-What will really, really count is the ending; you can read why below:
Trivia Video #3 - Can you play as the boss of Twisted Metal 1, Minion? Plus a history about Sweet Tooth's connections
There are many pieces that make a great ending; this will be something that very few will totally agree with. In terms of importance, the most relevant part, at least for Twisted Metal, turns out to be the wish and what becomes of it. Why, because it allows the world of one’s own imagination to become the reality and react to how a situation forms right before them. This is where I know some people will have a hard time swallowing the list. I know that some of you just won’t agree with what is said because there are so many memorable endings.
Twisted Metal Tunes:
Twisted Metal III – Superbeast, Rob Zombie:
Twisted Metal 1 – Rooftop theme, The Pinnacle Group:
NOTE: Read the introduction sentence for each entry before you read the main paragraph afterwards or you’ll miss the big twists. I also have to be very selective on what endings make it in because the bar is set so tremendously high.
#10 - Axel – Twisted Metal 2
Axel seeks to finally be released from his father’s metal machine of torment.
Quite a stand and statement; who would have guessed he’d tear himself from what was more or less his lifeline to walk amongst the world? It’s what totally made me remember this ending just a bit more than so many. But, no matter how many times I watch it, I always felt that it didn’t quite wrap up well. What happens to Axel? Would his granted strength overcome the bloodshed and pain that would have killed others? Nobody will know; bloody and shocking, but it needed to go a little further to reign as the best.
#9 - Spectre – Twisted Metal: Black
Spectre seeks her own, ‘perfect man’ as she’s never found one for her.
The middle portion features one of the most unsettling moments of all time, it’s so true and deadly; but, that’s not the ending. And twist, twist, twist; find out her hater got the Frankenstein lesson and then she finds out he still doesn’t love her. No wonder she snapped; and her final words are a shuddering statement, a woman going on a murderous manhunt for her perfect man. Shock is the main reason, you can even here when she talks agitatedly; but there are marginally better endings.
#8 - Twister – Twisted Metal: Head-On
Ms. Watts seeks her lost sister which she hopes no matter what, is still alive.
It starts with quite a good recap of what happened to the other Watts from Twisted Metal 2. And then, that mysterious creativity starts off… Talk about an epic way to resurrect the dead, kill the Grimm Reaper and watch something really bad happen. It leads up to the undead sister’s appearance really, really well; but, I also find that the music gave the big reveal away. Even Ms. Watts believed that her sister was dead (but you can tell she didn’t accept it); though it shows emotion, this way quite realistically.
#7 - Darkside – Twisted Metal: Black
Dollface seeks to be released from the contraption her old boss put her inside of.
After watching everything you’ve seen from beginning; from her story to the torment that came with, the turnout totally changes it all for the best. This is one of those 1-note endings; I largely chose this ending because it changed so much in one moment. She makes a serious statement about herself and how freedom is something for you to discover and not something everyone will agree upon as freedom. She also reflects on what she has compared to what she’ll be without her outfit.
#6 – Roadkill – Twisted Metal 2
Roadkill thinks he can break the forth wall and escape Twisted Metal.
So Twisted Metal is all just a dream, what an interesting explanation. Massive pile ups represent the contest’s battle grounds, Axel’s arms are never seen because they’ve been decapitated, and the doctor’s voice is the same as Calypso’s. Wow, what an interesting conclusion to be made. But what takes it one step beyond is that the ending doesn’t take that explanation in the fullest of belief.
Come on, you know what I’m talking about; Calypso’s burning eyes at the end, the fact that Roadkill is a naturally delirious person. It all faintly reminds me that Roadkill’s escape from Twisted Metal is only a dream and whether or not Twisted Metal is real, is one of many great mysteries.
#5 - Outlaw – Twisted Metal 1
Outlaw seeks what any other loyal cop would, an end to Twisted Metal.
Man, talk about a simple request totally going the wrong way for somebody. The buildup dialogue is really good and this was one of those endings where I was certain Calypso was screwed. As before, it’s a 1-note ending, but what made it so good was such an unexpected twist of words.
Ah heck, here’s the live action ending too!
#4 - Sweet Tooth – Twisted Metal: Head-On
Sweet Tooth yet again seeks a very personal wish, reign of Twisted Metal.
As the ending slowly builds to its climax, the banter between Sweet Tooth and Calypso drops a lot of hints about Sweet Tooth in a very careful and effective way. And then, Sweet Tooth makes possibly the most insane wish ever. It has a great transformation sequence and Calypso, too late to realize, orders his death in a marvelously deceptive way. It’s an awesome twist of role reversal; the minor issue is that you somewhat foresee the twist just before it occurs but, you aren’t sure if the guards know who to really kill.
#3 - ATV – Twisted Metal: Head-On
Genie seeks what anybody would want, women.
How the hell does somebody screw this up?! This is every man’s dream and somehow, even though he got his wish in the truest of honest loyalty, it manages to get totally kyboshed. I guess he didn’t think about the consequences of his actions, but who would? It seemed foolproof! Beyond having probably the best, ‘twist of words’ ending in the whole series, the mumbling of Genie with annoyed Calypso is pretty funny.
#2 - Mr. Grimm – Twisted Metal 2
Mr. Grimm seeks souls of humankind to appease his addictive appetite.
Mr. Grimm is just badass; he’s the Grimm Reaper, on a motorcycle, and he’s a rogue junkie for souls. The ending even shows that his voice and appearance are of a daunting, hellish predator. He seeks something to cure his malicious addiction, more souls; too bad he was a little too expressive about that need. Calypso does as he’s told and creates a mirage showpiece of chaotic war and traumatizing deaths. I admit that the twist is somewhat foreseeable; but it’s literally a testament to effective storytelling, visual effects, and interesting characters.
#1 - Shadow – Twisted Metal 2
Mortimer comes to Calypso not for a wish, but to present a gift.
It was surprising enough at first that he wasn’t there to make a wish; but, he carefully has masked a surprise attack on Calypso as a, ‘gift’. Finally, the dead innocents of the rampageous contest take their rebellion upon Calypso.
If a barrage of souls took me off my feet and flew me into the skies, I’d probably faint to death or scream louder than ever. Seemingly trapped in his situation, Calypso takes a leap on the last way out. And this is what proves that Calypso is insane, badass, and above mankind; flying out on the wing of a plane while cackling and freaking the shit out of a child.
It is 3 genius twists that all lead the way of a series of events to behold: a winner not claiming his prize, revenge disguised as a, ‘gift’, and a Hollywood style escape. All properly weaved together, this is what makes itself the best ending of Twisted Metal.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now that you’ve seen what I deemed as the best ending, why don’t you tell me what you think is the best ending? Why so few endings from Black?! Twisted Metal: Black didn’t have many spots on the list because:
-Many of the endings are straight up revenge plots with few actual big twists.
-There’s limited presence of the, ‘what if’ danger of misspeaking and Calypso’s magical powers to create a truly impressive situation.
-Almost everybody speaks entirely in past tense and it makes a unique voice not as noteworthy.

That massive explosion with none other than Sweet Tooth forming in the cloud of dead ash turns out to be the final desktop [http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/14/140440/2124728-tm_explosion_week_3_sc.png], enjoy.
And at last, an extra; I'm starting to run out of extra goodies, in fact, I had planned something else, but what I needed got taken down. I have decided to feature an early interview about David Jaffe in his early starts with PlayStation and the first 2 Twisted Metal games
So, I hope you all enjoyed Twisted Metal Marathon; I certainly did and I’m certainly picking the game up. Be on the lookout for my reviews in the coming months, including this one because that’s coming too… eventually!
