Route 36, just south of Ecruteak City in Pokemon Heartgold, a couple of moments ago: I'm training my pokemon in the tall grass for the upcomming gymbattle against Morty in Ecruteak City. As I'm training my latest addition to my team (lvl 20 Gastly) I fight pokemon after pokemon, Growlithe, Stantler, Pidgeotto, Raikou... WAIT WHAT? A MOTHERFUCKING RAIKOU? AWESOME!

Yes forum, I had quite some luck as I encountered Raikou in a random event just 30 minutes after entering the burned down tower for the first time. But anyways, I encountered a lvl 40 Raikou with my lvl 20 Gastly. I was aware of the fact that Raikou along with his other legendary buddies are a tad bit shy and tend flee after one turn of battle.

Still amazed about the fact that I encountered Raikou, I order Gastly to use Hypnosis so I can put the mighty beast asleep. This was a big risk though, as Hypnosis only has a 60% succes rate... but I landed a hit. Good for me that I was lucky again you'd think. Think again. Raikou was, to my greatest joy, indeed asleep. BUT this didn't stop him from fleeing, and as quikly as he appeared, he was gone. What a bummer, how dissapointing, very... unfortunate.

Big sigh from me, so I just decide to keep on training my Gastly and perhaps capture this beast another day. I go check my Gastly's summary to check how much XP I need to reach the next level and all of the sudden I realize something... Gastly knows how to use Mean Look (For those who don't know or remember, Mean Look is an attack that always strikes first and makes the foe unable to flee no matter what).

It took me a few seconds to comprehend what big of a cock-up I just did and after that all I could do was rage... a whole lot.

So tell me forum, have you had screw-ups in games where you just thought "Am I seriously this dumb not to have realized this before?"

Your story is a lesson teaching "save often, save early" my friend...

I was playing Fallout 3 once and I genuinely walked across half the map before I realised I could have just quick travelled there. Cue facepalm and swearing.

haha, I've been there.

Try breaking your new contract phone, going phoneless for 2 weeks and realising that you could have just placed the simcard back in the old one....

The encounter is random, so it wouldn't have mattered if I saved or not.

I've had the same thing happening to me in Fallout 3, you just walk for 10 minutes and you arive at your destination... then you realize you coul have quiktraveled.

Then again, it is nice sometimes to just travel around on the wasteland, so it's not THAT bad.

That thing looks like a kid stuck stickers and painted on a cat

I'm glad it got away, poor thing

Pokémon is evil! It's like cockfighting, but...for kids!?

Your avatar gives me immense joy.

Sometimes if I'm stuck on a game, I'll look up a walkthrough and think 'How the hell did I not realise that big brown door I have to go through!!?' Or something.

Back when I was fairly new to Pokemon and was going through Victory Road in Gold (which was my first Pokemon game that I got when I was like 13), I encountered a Shiny Onix.

I tried to use weaker attacks to wear it down so I could capture it and I was healing every time my health was low. I managed to get its health bar very low, but not in the red.

I was on the last hit which would have brought it to critical health. I bet you can see this one coming...

*Pokemon* used Tackle!
"A critical hit!"
"It's not very effective..."
"ONIX fainted!"

That one is actually way worse then mine, considering shinies are very rare.

Back in Silver I encountered a shiny Ponyta.

And then ran away... I didn't realise how rare shiny pokemon were back then

the 'mean look' strategy is a good one but it does have a couple of flaws. The main one is the obvious one; Raikou = level 40. Your Ghastly = level 20 which says your party is at a similar level. You're party will be wiped out pretty easily.

Flaw number 2: Struggle. If you had strong enough Pokemon, you would eventually dwindle Raikou's PP in all of it's attacks. It would begin using the Struggle attack which drains it's HP and end up killing itself and disappearing from the map entirely

Flaw number 3: This is the biggest set back. One of Raikou's attacks are Roar. Roar will instantly make you flee from battle and when you check the map, you will notice that Raikou is no longer there. Roar doesn't just kick you out of combat, it makes Raikou disappear just like if you were to knock it out.

Next time you see Raikou [this goes for Entei too] you should try to freeze it. An easier thing to do would be to paralyze them. Freezing makes them easier to catch than paralyzing but, it's all good unless you want to just say screw it and use a master ball. Good luck to you trainer!

So you're mad that you didn't use meanlook resulting in him pwning your Ghastly which is half Raikou's level?

I was at one of the puzzles in Portal. The one where just before the line:
"Remember the aperture science bring your daughter to work day is the perfect time to have her tested."
So you know, had to go into two mini rooms to hit two switches and then allow an electric orb to go into one of those.... things that would initiate the completion of the puzzle.

After going on one of the ridiculously slow elevators to reach that room I hit the button. I then run to the next one to try that and then I ran out of time and the buttons reset.
I remember I was swearing and cursing and wondering how the hell I was supposed to move so fast across the map, the only way I could do that would be if I had some kind of device that allowed me to instantly travel across a room.
Suddenly I remember that I'm holding the Portal Gun....

I mean it was pretty embarrasing to completely forget the entire function to which the game I was playing was based around but for some reason I had a mental blank.

I frequently fuck up in Read Dead Redemption due to the weapon switching menu. The number of bounties I've accidentally killed by switching to dynamite instead of the lasso, or the opposite, the number of times I've died in a pitched gunfight by trying to lasso my opponent....

I used to get the feeling a lot on point-and-click adventure games. The solution was usually the only thing you didn't think to try, and half the times it made sense; this, after I'd spent half an hour combining a stuffed chicken with some nails to try and do...whatever, was particularly galling.

I had a 24 sandslash, a lvl 24 quilava and a 23 mareep ready to back gastly up, plus an additional shitload of superpotions. I Could have tried slowly bringing his health down while keeping him asleep and my pokemon healed.

Also, this wasn't a ragepost or anything, just a little story to share my idiotic move I did and to hear stories from others.

It took 26 hours of gameplay, I repeat: 26 *HOURS* OF GAMEPLAY, to figure out that you had to use the wood plank that you took from your sunken ship to repair the damaged tree (you know, the wooden kind) in Shining Force 2. I kicked myself hard for that one.

On the plus side though, my healer gained so much experience during the many, MANY random battles that she had 5 full life bars when you shouldn't have more than 1 and a half by game's end. She was able to kill every opponent in one shot, including the final boss. Why just the healer? While everyone else was only gaining 1 exp per attack because the enemies were a lower level, she was still gaining 10 exp per heal. Levels, ahoy!

A couple of times in games like oblivion I have got completely turned around in samey rock tunnels in fights that I finally find the door to go further after a little jog to find my self at the entrance not the door to further in.
