The BBC World Service Country Rating Poll asked nearly 29,000 people to rate the global influence of 16 major nations and the European Union.

The UK's positive rating rose from 53% in 2010 to 58% this year. It is the first time it has been the runner-up in the annual poll.

Negative views of the UK decreased by 2%, now standing at 17%. Of the 27 countries polled, 24 lean positive towards the UK while two, Pakistan and Mexico, have overall negative views of the UK. One country, Turkey, remains divided.

Those with the most positive views of the UK were the US, at 80%, followed by Australia at 79% and Canada at 69%.

Germany was the most positively viewed nation overall, with 63% of those surveyed rating its influence as positive.

So, besides a little ego stroking, do you think these polls actually mean anything? I like it to a degree, it shows that not nearly as many people hate us as I thought. Of course, Germany probably deserves to be top, they're a really nice people and Berlin is the dog's bollocks.

The most important thing, however, is that we beat the damn French!
HUZZAH!

No.

Remember the list of the most important events of the twentieth century, where the people of Britain voted Princess Diana's death as being more important than both world wars?

Same thing.

despite what your media says, we are actually pretty decent people.
you probably wouldn't find a very negative attitude towards any European country here in America.. except for France maybe.. and Russia if we want to count them.

Agree with Germany though, i've never met someone I didn't like from there.
i think it has to do with them trying to make up for the whole nazi thing haha.

Does anyone have link to the full poll? I want to know how well my country (Netherlands) scored. I Googled "BBC World Service Country Rating Poll" but didn't find it. It was interesting to see the divide in news articles reporting on the poll though. Half are like "Yay! Second place!" and the other half are saying "Britain less popular than fucking Germany" (okay, maybe without the F-word, but I can feel that they meant it that way).

I don't know where I can find the whole poll, but I like that Germany is 1st. It shows that people have chosen to disregard its previous mistakes and judge the country by its current behaviour.

It's the accent. It gets them every time.
I would pay good money to see someone speaking chav (or cortney rhyming slang) to a American.

Great Britain is a mix of emotions really, on one side its a beautiful country with a remarkable language and rich culture/history.

On the other side its full of idiots (some youth cultures), unnecessary violence, absolutely SHIT news and press.
Indeed many things hold them back, so its hit and miss for me.

I'll stick to my beautiful Norway.

I find it hard to believe really, I thought everyone hated the UK. Could we vote for ourselves? Because I'm sure Northern Ireland, Scottland and Wales hate the UK. I don't mind germany, they seem very efficient and their economy seems to be doing fine despite being the past, but I keep getting the feeling they'll try something again soon.
