I just finished Sword of the Stranger after a friend recommended it to me when we were discussing on which anime had the best fight scene(in which I was quick to point out Hei vs. Wei's first match up in the anime Darker than Black) and my friend was quick to say that despite not really having the best story, the best fight scene had to be Bones' Sword of the Stranger.

I highly recommend this movie, since the whole plot(Actual plot, considering how Japan tends to screw up the simplest of premises) actually services the climax of the anime.

It's strange how remarkably not over the top this is for a Street Fighter fight. Not that chucking couches is exactly normal, but it feels very grounded nonetheless. Can you believe the original Japanese version had soft piano music playing to this? Also, don't you miss the days when anime characters had a physical bulk to them?

Anyway, as for me:

Too bad it ends with her getting murdered to death, but atleast she went out with a bang.

Should I be a prick and show a DC Animated Movie fight scene? Well, yes, but just bear with me.

I don't watch enough truly balls out action scenes, so I will just cherry pick from what I've watched recently.

It comes out of nowhere, adds nothing to the overall plot.... but goddamn if it isn't one of the best scenes in the film.

Five posts and no one mention Gurren Lagann?

It has two gigantic drills trying to pierce each other to the point that it suck in the galaxies causing a brief moment of empty darkness!!!

Granted I would of embed the anime final battle and aswell Gurren Lagann vs Rasengan (named me another mech fight where the villain got out of the cockpit and start beting the hero mech with his/ her bare hands!) but I can't find a video of the entire fights.

-This is well animated, but does more at conveying tension than action (Jojo's Bizzare Adventure OVA)

-Here are some scenes with only acceptable animation, not god-tier stuff, but I still enjoy their coreography.

Black Rock Shooter OVA (not that TV silliness)

The second-to-last fight of Avatar is probably my favourite, mainly because it's such an intelligent resolution, as opposed to the usual "they fight for a bit and then one of them wins".

Couldn't find a higher quality version though. Sorry about that

Seen Sword of the Stranger qand it's definately one of the best fight scenes in anime. However my favourite is this one from FMA:B, well animated and really emotional
or a short version, other fight, same characters

or same anime, different characters.
Yeah, I really like FMA:B fights, they are quick and well animated.

Sorry, onlky found dub, I prefer sub.
Brotherhood is like Metroid: Other M.
It didn't happen, because it was terrible.

Naruto vs Pain is obviously the greatest fight ever. Disregard title of video, guy obviously has no taste. (Only 50% sarcasm).

I can't for the life of me think of a fight I'd consider to be totally on a level of its own, but this thread got me thinking about SAC again. So here's a scene from 2nd gig that may or may not be undeniably the best fight scene in anime:
I've got to watch it again sometime. I always feel so bad for the Tachikoma that gets shot up...

Wouldn't that be slightly "older" anime?

OP: I'm going to support Bebop with this clip from Ballad of the Fallen Angels. Which is unfortunately in English.

At five sessions it wraps up nicely the intro and lays out the rest of the show's tone, style and motives quite coolly.

Cowboy Bebop came out in 1998 and the Street Fighter 2 movie came out in 1994. So, Cowboy Bebop is "younger" than Street Fighter 2.

Combat was pretty infrequent but I've always liked the aesthetics of Seirei no Moribito
