Quite simply, what are the films you believe don't get the credit you feel they deserve? They can be live-action or animated.

To get this rolling I'm going to The Last Unicorn.

This is one of those films that I can praise to no end and it upsets me when people say they never heard of it. The story can appeal to children due to the nature of the story, being a fairy tale featuring unicorns, magicians, dragons and harpies among other things. The older and wiser audiance member can even appreciate it as it plays with the classic tropes of Fairy tales, decontructing its characters and revealing new facets to old archetypes.

The art is amazing and in many cases would've been the first example of anime to those who first saw it as children, though it is a strange hybridisation of western and eastern styles.
The voice acting is phenomenal and reads like A-List ensemble cast: Mia Farrow as the titular Unicorn; Alan Arkin as the bumbling wizard Shmendrick; Jeff Bridges; Rene Auberjonois; Angela Lansbury playing very much out of character as Mommy Fortuna and, of course, Christopher Lee as the haunting and rather tragic King Haggard, a role he reprised for the German dub.

Even the music by America works despite being soft rock in a medieval setting.

Bah, I'm starting to ramble on. So what about you guys? What films do you find are underrated?

I know I'm going to get shit for this, but I'd say Pandorum.

It was one of my favourite films of the past few years and thought it was honestly quite amazing. For some reason though, it was almost universally hated by critics and I can't really fathom why >>

Also, even though it's by a fairly well known director at this point, Sunshine is a wonderful film from Danny Boyle. My personal favourite of all his films, actually.

Yes, I have quite the taste for scifi if you couldn't tell <<

Hm... how is "The Last Unicorn" underrated? It is awesome and everybody likes it. Or not? WHO OF YOU DOESN'T LIKE IT? HANDS UP, SO I CAN TAKE YOU DOWN!.

Also: i doesn't like Sunshine... watched it... didn't feel anything.

Hm, but back to what i think: Maybe "Kung Pow" as one of the funniest films ever... but it only holds a 5.8 at the IMDB. (I voted it a nine as the only film i have watched over 30 times and memorized the whole dialogue and still laugh when i watch it now, 7 years after i first watched it)

But it is one of those movies people either fucking LOVE or hate with all their heart.

Seeing as we have the crappy Americanized version of it that we so callously called Quarantine, I'd vote REC and REC 2. They were great films that had a level of depth that I hadn't seen in an American movie in a long time. I also appreciated the religious undertone to the whole thing, especially in the second one, seeing as religion is such a huge backdrop to the Spanish culture.

Hah, didn't think I'd ever see anyone else who saw Kung Pow, let alone like it!

"No one can escape the tiny net!"

OT: Probably the Orphanage. No one has an excuse for not seeing that.

The religion did add a twist to the 2nd one, yeah. Those two films had me unusually excited all the way through. I haven't seen Quarantine, though.

Man, Kung Pow is awesome.
And it's true. People either love it or hate with the fury of a thousand suns.
I've never understood the latter. It's one of the funniest movies ever made.

Don't bother, it's Americanized garbage the screams "Hollywood Rip-Off". It's like they mashed 1 and 2 together, cut out everything that made it great, and dropped it off of at the theaters to rot out people's minds.

And on the topic of REC itself, I'm so very excited for the next two cause I think that one is a prequel explaining the girl and what happened there and another one is the sequel to the second.

The Fall. Watch it in HD on a big tv, it's beautiful. There are lots of little things to notice too, as well as the epic (in the proper sense of the word) images. Plus there's a good child actor in it! The relationship between the girl and the bloke is really well done.

I can't praise it enough.

"Yes... the Tiny Net is a death sentence: You see, it is a NET and it is TINY. Nyeah..."

DAMN... that movie is Quoteable

("I must see if i too posess the "special skill"" - one of the best scenes ever. "Do you think crying was the signal?")

Back to topic: I don't think "Ikiru" or "The Fall" belong here... since they both are very high rated, and pretty much both held as universally good movies.

Se7en.

The ending made you shit brix.

Edit: Actually, scratch that. A Scanner Darkly had me shitting brix from beginning to end. Try to watch it the whole way through and understand what the hell just happened, is happening and is about to happen. One can only imagine watching it as high as the characters in the film itself.

I pick those, as they all got about average-poor reviews from critics, but I really enjoyed all of them.

Holy crap, I saw this last night. A classic in every regard.

Two movies that I don't think get the respect they deserve are Gangs of New York and V for Vendetta. Gangs has Daniel Day Lewis at his finest, an emotional story, and is one of Scorsese's best works, in my opinion. The emotion is so raw and the violence so vivid is draws you in. Plus, it is a great period piece.

V for Vendetta is also a very emotionally raw movie. It does a lot in its time span (there are several small movies in one big movie, in my opinion), has great acting, great messages, great action, great dialogue...it's an all around great movie. I don't know why no one even talks about it anymore.

Everyone made a big fuss over "In The Mood For Love" but "2046" was way better:

The best "Anime" I've ever seen is actually a European film called "Princess". Nothing Japanese I've seen holds a candle to it, not even Miyazaki comes close:

"Dogville" is the best thing Nicole Kidman's ever been in and should get some kind of award for being one of the nastiest yet most profoundly satisfying (if you're me) films ever to be shown in cinema history. The preview fortunately doesn't give away just how incredibly mean-spirited this film is:

Fuck all those other Nicole Kidman films, this is the one to see, even if you hate her you'll like her in this.
