I don't know why I just cant get into the hype of popular TV shows, maybe I'm just extra skeptical and nit-picky when people say: "its the best" and then leave it at that.
Most of them suggested to me by friends are way too overrated, and overall not very good.
And when I surf on TV and pick out shows I've never heard of before, rarely, they're pretty damn good, but they're so underrated I would have never found them before because of crappy time slots.

So I'm looking out for hidden masterpieces of television.
- unjustly canceled
- still running but nobody knows about it
- everybody hates it but it actually pretty good
- better than it sounds

So far my list is pretty damn small(for obvious reasons):

Dead Like Me - Grim Reapers, with jobs who try living ordinary lives.
Pushing Daisies - A Pie Maker with the ability to bring people back from the dead! (way better than it sounds)
Penn & Teller: Bullshit - Two Las Vegas magicians take on controversial topics (pretty funny)

Attention Scum! - see my avatar, it's rather surreal sketch show, maybe.
Dead Set - zombie apocalypse during a "big brother" style tv show.
Black Books
Spaced
The Mighty Boosh - cult show

(Those above are all English shows)

War of the Worlds - the tv series, i actually thought it was good, quite old now
Dark Skies - old show but good

Probably loads more, I don't like much mainstream stuff.

Deadwood - One of the best westerns I've ever seen. Alas it has been taken off air but has 3 seasons. After I've seen this the rest of the shows were like "meh".

The boondocks - Funny as hell. I nearly thought that I didn't have a sence of humor regarding tv shows anymore, till I saw this.

Robot chicken - Not always very funny, but the episodes that are good are VERY good. And still more funny than most things I see.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

* Edit. The legue of gentlemen. British humor, very bizare and probably like it or hate it. But I thought it was fun.

"Can't Stop the Boondocks" count?
Doesn't mainstream hate boondocks for being racist?

The boondocks racist?! Come on now. They just make very crude jokes about stereotypes and make fun of predjudism. That and the show was made by an African American http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_McGruder so I don't really know what you mean.

* Edit. Maybe even worth watching to see how stupid racism is.

I actually thought Dead Like Me went far, far downhill in it's second season.
Was a shame, because the show had much potential.

I really like the Dresden Files and Rome.
Though Rome is hardly underrated.

I really liked Millenium, the spiritual follower to the X-Files.

Also, the first two series of Digimon. People really dislike it simply because it's Digimon, but it's actually pretty good.
The first season of Millennium was fantastic, the 2nd season not quite so good.

Human Target, will most likely get cancelled.

The John Larroquette show the first season but after that it was dumbed down.

Dresden Files, Firefly, Deadwood, Pushing Daises, Kings and WKRP.

Happy Viewing, the Prisoner.

Freaks and Geeks. I think Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jason Segel, and Judd Apatow all got their start there. Probably one of the most unjust cancellations ever.

Oh,and Home Movies. I wish that would have never gone off the air.

NewsRadio was a really funny show. I always hated the laugh-track and thought it was just a way for unfunny shows to trick viewers, but NewsRadio is the exception. Also, most of the episodes are on Hulu.
