I'm sure a lot of you guys know people (or are one of these people) who you'd never guess would be video game junkies. Priests, teachers, grandparents, whatever. I bring this up, because I discovered my Physics teacher is a die-hard Halo fan. Last Friday, we had a test on velocity, gravity, and acceleration formulas. When I got to the final question, I saw this:

Joey has forged a circular map on Avalanche. He drives a Warthog around the track with a constant speed of 55 km/h. What is his average velocity for one lap? If he enables speedhack, and begins driving with an average speed of 500 km/h, by how much will his average velocity increase?

While the physics nerds like myself are rolling their eyes at the trick question, the point is that he's an Halo fanboy (He's old, so he's a fanman, I guess). Oh and he took a personal day today, September 22, and it wasn't Rosh Hashanah. What came out today, my fellow Escapists? You got it.

My point is this. Who are the people in your life that play video games who you wouldn't expect to?

No one. Video games aren't just meant for children, they are meant to give entertainment to anyone.

My 70 year old aunt. Stunned me when I saw her and she told me she had a PS2 upstairs.

Well, most probably wouldn't expect my dad to play video games, but considering that I grew up with him, it's not odd at all to me.

He's a middle-aged high school English teacher, essentially introduced me to gaming from a very early age, and is a nigh unstoppable force in WoW these days.

I'm this person.

Seriously, everyone thinks I'm some sort of adamant artist/beatnik-type, from the way I act to the way I dress to the way my house is decorated. Then I mention D&D, and it invokes some pretty interesting reactions. Then again, I've heard before that my interests are so diverse that it makes me hard to read anyhow.

Well, this is off topic but manages to stay on with one feeble finger so.....
I recently learned my Japanese teacher has never played a single game, or even seen a game console until 3 years ago
This is shocking as she lived in Japan for about 9 years

My dad really likes the Pokemon games. His muscles are huge, he's got a sweet beard, and he spends around eight hours a day doing strenous yard work, even when it's raining. He's pretty much the definition of "manly".....and he likes Pokemon. My brain can't handle it.

I had a teacher that kept his Xbox in the class for us to play during periods in which we had nothing to do. He'd occasionally join us and kick all our asses at Halo 2.

Uh... I am. My history class is filled with gamer guys, so when we're talking about the Renaissance, they'll be cracking jokes about Assassin's Creed 2, I'll throw in a joke too, and they'll be all surprised.

Or when I wouldn't stop talking about Fallout 3 last year. People assume by the way I look (see profile picture) that I couldn't possibly be a nerd; that my favourite movies are Lord of the Rings, or that I'd give my pinky over losing my XBox.

I don't really meet people who surprise me like that but I have met several of those people who are like 'I have never played a video game in my life, they are dull and uninteresting and rot your brain' (How would they know if it was fun if they never played one???)

Most of my "real life" friends you would not expect to play WoW. A lot of them used to before joining the Army/Navy became Divers or whatever. They sometimes play a month when they are back here aswell. They aren't exactly gamers in the way the people I LAN with are though.

That's pretty damn awesome, my physics teacher is about as exciting as a manilla folder.

My art teacher from freshman year was a prolific gamer of many genres and my chemistry teacher last year let us play COD4 the last day of school in class.

No one I meet expects me to be into games because I'm a girl and not a mutant. Thank you lame stereotypes.

Heh, I know what that feels like. I also have a good friend who happens to be a really attractive girl, and when we and some of our other friends were out on a little pub crawl she was sitting on her bar stool, just staring off into the distance. So I'd nudge her and ask what's on her mind, and she responds, "Just thinking about whether I should create a new character for Ultima Online and what it's going to be..."
I was spluttering unintelligible sounds for about 10 seconds before bursting into laughter.
