Usually when you play games you don't really get all that emotional, much less sad. However there are some moments in games that manage to really tug at heart strings, and to make it worse the ones that do it the best come out of nowhere and hit you like a brick. For me the one thing that sticks in my mind is the ending of Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword where,

Link has to give the Master Sword and Fi to the stone and end their companionship. This was really surprising for me as I never really cared for Fi one way or the other. The music didn't exactly help either....

The ending to Dreamfall: The Longest Journey.

I won't spoil anything, but anyone who's played it will know what I mean.

It gets pretty dark toward the end, albeit in a very cliche manner, but then things perk up right as the game starts to wrap up. Then it turns right back around and just bloody well lets you have it.

Imagine being knocked down in a fist fight only to then have your opponent graciously offer you a hand up and a beer by way of olive branch, but then just as you reach for his hand he kicks you in the throat.

The cliché of Aerith's death in FFVII has to be mentioned. Spoiler? Hah! Everyone knows that by now.

Many moments in MGS bring tears (manly of course) to my eyes. What was unexpected for me was how sympathetic Sniper Wolf, Psycho Mantis and Vulcan Raven are. When you first see them they appear as a emotionless killer (Wolf), an insane masochist (Mantis) and a man whose only passion is war and the culture of the Innuit (Raven).

Some of the bad endings in BlazBlue CS: EX are ridiculous. Sure you have stuff like Noel being Noel and pansying out every two seconds and plot stuff is happening to her but stuff like Makoto and Tager's bad endings are pretty brutal and/or tragic. Usually Relius = bad ending from what i've seen so far. Walking mind rape machine with a penchant for making people's souls into random objects/weapons.

Oh and a bit in Carl's story mode was a bit sad. Partly saddening but mostly just a plain interesting plot revelation

"That puppet... Ignis. Was MY MOTHER!"

Carl doesn't get enough love man... He's so cool and tragic and shit :(

There's a bit in To The Moon where one of the stupidest lines ever spoken (out of context) made me cry. Literally this huge dawning realisation of a line. Once and only once mind. The entire rest of the game I was perfectly not crying. Even during the ending! Fuck you artsy game! You've failed the rule that all artsy games' endings have to make people cry!

"But what if you get lost or we miss each other?"

"We'll just regroup on The Moon silly!"

Oh... Oh. Ohhhhhhhh.

The ending to the first Pokemon: Mystery Dungeon where-
everyone starts getting seriously emotional over you having to leave their world. Sad music is playing, and I'm pretty sure your partner starts crying. It's been years since I played it so I hope I'm not just making that up.

Either way, that was some pretty heavy shit to take in for a GBA Pokemon game. Although I think everything turned out alright after all the drama.

I was going to say The Longest Journey myself when I saw the topic, but now there's no need. That descriptions works well enough for both games.

The entire climax to Shattered Memories. It's this well paced sudden sprint for the final destination, where you just know all your questions will finally be answered after your struggle for the truth.

And they are.

Hmm, I never did finish that game for some reason. Now I'll have to. Good thing it appears to be BC with 360.

The end of the mission "Buying the Farm," in Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30, when
Allen and Garnett are killed.

It all happened so fast. One moment I'm congratulating myself on a job well done, the next I'm racing in the direction of Leggett's screams, my stomach already sinking as I suspect what I'll find when I get there. I round the corner and BAM! Hit me like a sledgehammer.

You know, every time this thread comes up I feel the need to bring up this same mission from Saints Row 2!

Dragon Age II - the serial killer / Dr. Frankenstein - quest (for lack of a better word).
That is due to personal reasons, but it did make me turn off the game and go for a walk and clear my head before I could return to the game.

Suikoden: Gremios sacrifice. Yeah, you can revive him, but it still hits you when you all that is left of him is his cape.

The big reveal of Silent Hill 2. Those that have played it should know what I mean.

Could not agree with you more. That mission was filled with so much passion, especially since last time we talked he tells Carlos he'll be a ganster in no time. But you know what was good, getting sweet SWEET revenge on the giant tattoo prick.

I guess another moment for me would be ME3 when
I saw Grunt run into all those Rachnai laughing and saying, "My turn" as if looking back at his ancestors ready to join them. Sure the sadness turned to laughing and jumping up and down with joy when he came out relatively unharmed but boy did I feel like a good soldier and friend died for a moment there

To be honest I think everything that happened in the walking dead were unexpected sad moments for me. Really enjoyed it though. Some of it took me really off guard. If you havent played it I'd recommend it.

In Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, if you trick the TV guy to going back to the hospital...even though the dialogue is funny.

Also, at the end where

You have to kill Officer Chunk. He's a silly character, way out of his depth, but it's his job to stop you, so he tries. He warns you several times, and is very reluctant to harm you, and doesn't know how easily you can kill him.

Also, Exile3 if you join, and then leave the Anama.

Oh...and even the backstory to one of the Skunny games. Very silly game about a time travelling squirrel or whatever, but all of a sudden it gets emotional when he talks about his promise to his family or whatever. Probably just me, though.

emma's death in mgs2 was the first one I remember that got me like that,
hit me like a damn sledgehammer I tells you
then various events in ME3, and when I had kelly get melted in ME2 because I was an idiot and skipped all the loyalty missions to do them all together (aka after the collector invasion on the ship)
