Sorry if this has been posted before but I did a search for what triggered this post and didn't find anything. Anyway, I'm sure a lot of us have found things in games that have a different meaning than the game (and the ESRB) let on. My example is Drain You by Nirvana in Rock Band 2. If you look up the lyrics I'm pretty sure there's no doubt that the song is about a fetus that absorbed its twin in utero. Granted, the album "In Utero" came later, but I think that gives the song some thematic weight. But really, as a father of twins and learning how that process works (and tends to not work, resulting in one baby) I can only surmise that Kurt Cobain, or someone he knew, was a twin that absorbed his or her sibling. I would imagine Harmonix (or the ESRB) didn't know about this when they included the song in the game. Has anyone come across anything like this in other games? I'm curious as a game developer because this might be a way to introduce topics not typically addressed in video games in way that doesn't make alarm bells ring...

Rock Band 2 has the song 'Hammer Smashed Face' by Cannibal Corpse as a downloadable track, and you fuss over Nirvana? :p

A game that comes to mind with the topic at hand is Earthbound. Specifically the last boss.

im afraid i dont comleteley understand your question in that context

i would imagine that harmonix usually doesnt know much about what the subtext of most of the songs in their game are, just because interpretations of lyrics can be so subjective

also, while i understand how that subtext would add depth to that particular song, i dont see how it would add depth to rock band as a game

but then again i could just be misreading the question here
