In a few weeks, three years of University comes to a close for Dok Zombie.

In the past three years I have become a total slob, let my personal hygiene slide to previously unknown levels of depravity, descended into realms of manchild geekiness the likes of which I haven't known since I was 14, been embarrassingly wasted more times than I care to remember, spent a hideous amount of money on weed, filled a whole bookshelf with books and comics I would never have read otherwise, had the most embarrassing sexual experience of my life, which everybody found out about, been introduced to music that I wouldn't have touched with a bargepole beforehand, met some brilliant people and some epic wankers, embodied any number of student cliches (this thread being one of them), gained a disgusting amount of weight, danced like a retard to the kind of music that only mysterious pills of unknown origin could make bearable, watched literally hundreds of films ranging from superb pieces of cinema, to so bad it's funny, to so bad it's embarrassing and developed countless examples of those "running-in-jokes" that always appear puerile and pretentious to anyone who isn't involved.

I've also loved every fucking minute of it.

So I'd like people to discuss either their University (College, whatever) experiences or, if you're enrolling for the end of the summer, what you hope/expect to get out of it.

You may have messed up your wording, the US has both College and University

Oh, I wasn't sure to be honest, in movies an such they always seem to refer to what I would call University as "College".

We have college too, or "Sixth Form", but it's only two years and sometimes it's attached to your school.

I skipped college and went straight to the working (fighting) force. Half of me regrets it, because people tell me its awesome. The other half of me is glad, because in the last 5 years I've had more 'real' life experiences than most of you college kids will in the next 10.

Eh. All the same, it would have been nice to learn my trade the easy way, instead of having it beaten into me with a butt stock.

Anyway... congratulations. What degree did you get anyway?

I made the mistake of starting classes two days after high school ended. It was just way too much for me, and I got overwhelmed. I quit for a few years, and I just started back again this semester (only a few weeks left in this one).

I'm not really sure what I expect to get out of all of it when I'm done. Every one I know that went for what they love hates what they do, except for like two friends I have. I just hope I won't hate what I'll be doing by the time I get done with classes.

Thanks!

I have this discussion all the time with my dad, he joined the Navy at 15 and had some amazing experiences, but now hates that he is stuck in the job he has. (Not that I'm suggesting that's true for everyone!) Sometimes I think I would have been earning a steady income for three years now, with a nice house and a car etc... but my main reasons were to A. Move away from my home town and B. Kill some time while I decided what to do with my life.

I studied English Literature, not completely finished yet, just getting the last touches done on my dissertation.

I'm in uni now, 3rd year law student.
Let me tell you a story of those 3 years:
In the beginning we were left to roam free. There was no obligation to attend classes or anything. Everything was good. There was a balance. The lazy students dropped out, the diligent ones stayed.
Then I enrolled in my 2nd year. They turned all classes obligatory for my year, as a test. Missing 3 classes: extra assignment. Missing 4: you're not allowed to take the exam. You had to wait a FULL YEAR.
Then my 3rd year came. Now THIS year is obligatory too. Next year all years will have that obligation.
Next year there's also a "you must be at least this awesome"-bar for the first year. You have to collect 40/60 collegecredits, or else you HAVE to quit.

In my first year I didn't make the bar. I scored a meager 21/60. Now I'm in the top 10% of my year.

So, university in Holland: it started out as an adventure of freedom, in which you could chose whether you attended class or studied from the books in that time. Now it's turning into regular school. Moreso: kindergarten with "you must be at least this awesome"-bars.

Now it's only lacking quicktime events...

The city rocks though. The facilities are really nice, teachers are competent and classes are interesting. It just lacks the alure it used to have...

I'm off to college (or university, or whatever, I'm not actually sure which is which) in a year, assuming I get the points required. I plan to do History and Politics in Trinity College, Dublin, but I've got a few other courses lined up.

I'm not particularly looking forward to it though, I always get stressed about these kinds of things. Accommodation might be a problem.

Still, I hope for the best, but I don't think it's going to happen. I imagine I'll just keep my head down, do the work, and keep quiet.
My advice would be, don't be one of those dickheads who instantly gets sucked into "lets see how many shots we can do in a night in the union" every weekend.

If you're moving to a new city, make sure to really make the most of it, get to know what's around to do.

By all means party like a ************, but try and mix it up, there are so many people at DMU who go to the same places week in, week out, only drinking in the designated "studenty" areas.

It's a sad, twisted world.

They shove people into the idea that "Either you go to college/university, or you won't ever get a good job." The truth is, is that most aren't SUITED for "higher learning". It's basically "Knowledge for the sake of knowledge" for some people, and either they want it and can use it, or it's lost on them and they're just throwing money away.

In my current state, I could have done without college, had a job, been just like every last one of the other go-nowheres in my town. I spent four years for psychology, only to have my university screw me. They didn't inform me of a class I'd have to take, and even with 4 psychology classes fitting in every semester for 4 years, I still wouldn't have been able to take the class I needed to get my Bachelor's in Psychology. So rather than try and pay BEYOND what my scholarship and loans was gonna cover, to go ONE semester for a class I wasn't very sure I'd pass, I got out with General Studies.

Now, going on 4 years later, I instead went to a tech college for Drafting and Design, only to have the economy and job market drop out. Luckily, and sadly, I've returned to my parents' house and live here while my life degrades into nothingness.

Sometimes, it's easier just to not have the expectation, and settle.

I'm a dirty first year, and I'm loving it. We too have fulfilled the student cliches of getting absolutely battered, not washing, hoarding pound coins for laundry, among others.

High points include:

Going one further from stealing a regular little temporary road sign, and stealing one of these bad boys instead.
7 foot aluminum pole and all. I have no memory of how we got it out of the ground, but we woke up and it was in the kitchen. Drunken strength FTW

Getting incredibly baked, and spending at least a solid half hour laughing at Weetabix, and watching my mate think he was drowning after drinking some water, discussing various football players declining careers, and fuck knows what else.

Getting laid. Say no more.

Drunken play fighting in the middle of the road, then almost getting run over by a taxi.

Nothing too amazing I know, but all in all, good times :D

I'm not there yet but I will be there this fall. So far I'm planning on training for triathalons (to kick my brother's ass if he ever runs an iron man like he says he will), playing intramural rugby, soccer, and diving, my ROTC program (thats Reserve Officers Training Corps for non-Americans) and then of course my studying. On top of that I'll need some videogames to get away from being busy, and also glowsticking is kool as hell and I plan on learning that.
I won't be disappointed if I can't fit drinking in, there are far better things to do.

I'm in my third year of college, and it's quite nice. I made friends, had great times, and did good enough in my classes to hopefully work with Microsoft when I leave my school.

Fuck yeah, man.

I've been at uni for 3 years, and have a little while to go yet. The past year though i have been on exchange on the opposite side of the world, which will be coming to a close in a little over month.

It has been absolutely amazing.

Same words, different meanings.
in the UK, college is for more practical skills, with lower entry requirements. Uni is for academic subjects and high level degrees. in the USA, these don't apply.

hehe

you in the army, makes me laugh...

OT: I don't know what I'll do for college or uni or whatever, it will involve a lot of bass though.
