Unlikeable Lead characters

So having just finished Gears 3 I found myself watching the end cut scene and thinking to myself 'Marcus Fenix is as likeable and charasmatic as a damp sponge', I know thats supposed to be his thing, the brooding hero, but he never displays a single iota of emotion. This is in a game where even Baird actually has a second where he isnt being a sarcastic dick. I found myself liking the supporting cast more than the main guy. .
So my question is this, have you ever played a game where you end up liking a supporting character more than the lead?

Yeah right, Cecil from FF4 is by far the best Final Fantasy protagonist..

Ot: Hope from FF 13 is the single worst character of all time... such an angsty, whinnig, annoying little turd I hate him with every fiber of my being... I know he's not the lead charafter but I was in such a blinding rage while playing that I completely ignored the rest of the characters...

I gotta say that every iteration of Hawke in Dragon Age II is completely unlikable. At least without a voice, there was some ambiguity in the delivery and I could make it up as I went.

EDIT: I mean, don't get me wrong, I love the games. Some of my favorites. But it's hard to deny that Nathan Drake is a GIANT DOUCHEBAG.

I felt like Marcus expressed more emotion in the third Gears, but you're right he was more or less a brooding hero

For me, I hated Geralt in the first Witcher. He just seemed smug, unlikeable, and his idea of flirting with women was more or less along the lines of "hey..wanna go bone in that bush around the corner?" which of course was usually rewarded with aforementioned bush-boning rather than a more realistic kick to the balls

Well, OP didn't asked for an unlikeable main character, he asked for a game with a secondary character that you liked more than the lead. In FF IV i liked Yang Fang Leiden more than Cecil, but in FFIV, FFV, FFVI, FFIX and to some small degree FF X & VII i did liked the main character.

The title of the thread is a bit misleading though.

FFXII. Vaan could spontaneously combusted and collapsed in a sewage ditch and I wouldn't have cared at all. Now Balthier, I would have shagged him hard enough that he would have walked funny for a week ...and Fran too. Bosch was pretty cool too, and a sexy blonde. Penelo was sweet, and useful in a fight.

Also, Ashe could have joined Vaan.

Well, I haven't finished it yet, only just starting helping the greasers with some girl trouble, but Bully's Protagonist, Jimmy, he is a complete twat. He's making enemies left right and centre and still is stupid enough to bad mouth more! After just taking care of the bullies and the preps a greaser walks in and asks him to help the greaser leader and Jimmy essentially says "Fuck off, I hate messengers." That's certainly a way to not make anymore pointless enemies Jimmy. Glad to see that shave on your bonce wasn't so close that you're missing parts of your skull.

But... I haven't finished it, so the prize goes to whoever that main character from the Alone in the Dark game was. A man I hated so much for being only angry, saying fuck far too often and for actually getting with that shrill annoying love interest.

I would also add Shepard to that list, parcticularly because in ME2 (s)he is such a giant tool for clearly evil incompetent assholes that I hated my own character. The lack of obvious resolution choices and decisions leaves only 2 canon versiosn of the character, both of which can't think for her/himself and can only wholeheartedly agree with intergalactic terrorists or act dickish toward them but still do everything they ask.

B'aw, and I was all excited seeing there were only 13 replies to this, I was going to be all smug and post "inb4 NATHAN DRAKE".

OT: Well, Kratos from God of War (II and III) isn't exactly likable (in the first one he was at least remorseful about his past). I'd also say Alex Mercer from Prototype isn't very likable. Can't really think of any others at the moment.

yea I agree that stilwater is a cess pot but I would like to have some sense of purpose other than being a total dick.

Beat me to my answer. Vaan was one of many reasons that I did not like FF13, the others were more like non-characters.

Although I have to admit that I like Tidus from FFX, even though he seems to be universally despised. In fact, FFX has some of the best characters and one of the most well-written stories I've ever seen in a game.
