Hey guys, I'm sure this thread has been done at some point already but I wanted to try my hand at it. What opinions do you hold in regard to gaming, or to certain games, or game genres that you feel puts you in a minority?

I'll give a couple. For one thing, I found Bioshock dull. I liked the atmosphere, but the combat just didn't do it for me, and the story and the more to the point the statement the game seemed to be trying to make about Objectivism was not interesting to me personally since I had already read and written about such things in a couple of college philosophy electives, and didn't feel invested in another commentary on it.

Also, I think Portal 2 is overrated. Don't get me wrong, it's still a good game, but I think it started to drag a little in the middle, and started to feel a little bit repetitive. Portal 1 was a very tight little package, but Portal 2, in an effort to make things bigger and better for the sequel, got flabby.

I'd pretty much agree with you on Bioshock, but I didn't play it in its prime so maybe shooter stagnation was just getting the better of me.

Also, I didn't enjoy Mass Effect, but this probably just comes down to me not caring much for heavily story-based games. I only ever played the first one. I found it to be tedious and pretty simplistic in terms of gameplay, but like I said - the story is what sells that series and it just isn't my thing.

I thought Portal 2 was, overall, better than the first one. Sure, some of the puzzles in the first one might have been more challenging (and I say that as a good thing), but I felt that Portal 2 was a more polished, more well rounded game that was able to deliver a wider variety of experiences.

I also despise Mass Effect, although not for quite the same reasons as SanAndreasSmoke. I found the gameplay to be mediocre at best, and pure and utter shit at worst. This wasn't helped by the absolutely atrocious interface that made inventory management a complete chore. And most of the sidequests I did ended up feeling exactly the goddamn same. Now, none of this would have made me hate the game as much as I do if it weren't for the fact that I found the story utterly forgettable. The dialogue wasn't very engaging, the characters weren't interesting, and there was nothing unique or surprising that happened throughout the game. Maybe the game would have been better as a different class, or playing renegade instead of paragon, and maybe the sequels are vastly improved, but honestly, I've long since stopped caring.

If someone plays a game in the wrong way, it's his own fault that he's not enjoying it. Examples: Going on a shooting spree in Hitman games, playing Amnesia during the day ,with lights turned on or other distractions, save-scumming on X-COM.

Playing a game on a PC that barely passes the minimum requirements shouldn't be expected to be smooth without tweaking.

While the PC is the the superior gaming platform, PC gamers such as myself are not superior gamers because of it.

I enjoyed mass effect 3, maybe more then mass effect 1. The only reason being I felt that mass effect 3, while average gameplay wise and not brilliant story wise, had the best character moments of the whole franchise. Also the ending doesn't bother me that much. I use the same logic as I do when I think about human mortality. It's fun while it lasted.

Here? No, not at all. You must have marched through the hall of 1000 COD hate threads or the fountain of a hundred of "tacked on multiplayer" tears to be standing at a post count of over 20,000 with your head still hanging high.

More OT: I also prefer console FPS over pc. That's probably from growing up with consoles but I played team fortress 2 and the shooting was fine, no problems with it, but its slightly more satisfying on a console controller for me. I know you can plug in a controller to a pc but I don't think it would be balanced because pc controls are more precise. It's just nostalgia and preference for me I suppose.

Hmm.. let's see...

- Valve's output does not instantly equal gaming perfection
- piracy is, plain and simple, a form of stealing and is terrible for the industry
- the used game market is part of the gaming economy but is bad for the industry when it occurs in a parasitic manner such as in the GameStop model
- EA is not evil and Bioware is not a terrible developer
- fighting games are in many ways the best of the game genres and contain many aspects that other genres could and should learn from
- developer intention in creation of a game should always hold more importance than player desire (but if a developer sees value in reasoned player input, it's not the end of the world for gaming as we know it if they put that input into practice)
- Multiplayer modes don't kill single player games
- CoD and other modern military shooters are not necessarily bad games just because of the genre they belong in or the personalities of those who frequently play them

Admitting, I am guilty of this. >_<

Currently playing through the game for the first time, and the battles have been noticeably getting harder, so I have been saving more and more often. Call me paranoid I suppose. Still really enjoying the game though.

OT: Well I really enjoy playing Angry Birds. A game that for some reason is looked down upon by a lot of people on here. Yes, it's a really simple and accessible game. Yes, it is ridiculously popular. Yes it is getting a movie that might suck. But how does that make it a bad game?

Oh, and don't bring up the "Crush the Castle" argument. Games have always took what other games had and did their own little twist to them. It would be like calling Sonic a rip off of Mario, or Halo a rip off of Half Life.

Spec-Ops the Line is only effective if you actually buy unquestioningly into the shit that other military shooters seem to espouse.

Otherwise it's a story that's been told many times before more effectively, tacked on to a dull-as-dishwater military TPS.

Ok... let's see how many people I piss off with my opinions. :p

-Dragon Age 2 > Dragon Age 1

Actually, I thought they both sucked, but at least DA2 didn't bore me to tears. The game felt like it was made for Napoleon Dynamite's brother. It was just so slow, weak, and nerdy. Ewww!

-Mario 2 = best Mario

Yeah, yeah, it's really some game called Doki Doki Panic something, I don't care. I really haven't liked any Mario game except that, and everyone hates that game. So what ever. >>

-GTA4 = garbage

This game is praised almost as much as Ocarina sometimes, and I have no clue why. All it is is a bunch of half-assed billard/racing/poker/darts game rolled into one. The type your Mom buys at a bargain bin for a PC that still runs Windows 2000.

Yeah, this. I blasted through Portal 1 many times, but Portal 2 leaves me dozing off on a second playthough, which I still haven't completed a year after purchase and I usually complete all my games a second time immediately after the first.

I have a couple unpopular opinions which i'm sure will get me in trouble:

Mass Effect 3 is a great game inspite of the ending.

EA and Bioware are not evil, or at least no more evil than any other developer, get over yourselfs.

Valve isn't as amazing as it's said to be, myself finding portal 2, Left for Dead 2 and half life all pretty average games, certainly not worthy of the praise they recieve.

I'm likely going to get shot at dawn for those opinions, but it's how I generally feel.

Edit:

Please could you elaborate? I read that and it intrigued me.

Oh, fine, let's do this.

- I was not impressed by Spec Ops: The Line. I like what it was trying to do with the whole bait-and-switch deal but the implementation was clumsy. It kept forcing me to do things then turning around and going, "Ohh, you monster, look what you did!" If you want me to feel responsible for something then It has to be something I chose to do. Also, I didn't give the slightest damn about the characters. They were just so one-note.

- I was bored silly by The Witcher 2. It tries sooo hard to be mature and ended up coming across as childish because of it, like a fourteen year old boy refusing to shave his bumfluff because he thinks facial hair makes him look older. After the fourth implied rape and the fifth extraneous sex scene my eyes were damn near rolling out of my head. Alright, I get it game, you're a daaaaaark fantasy for grown-ups. And the characters were a bloody insipid bunch too (all except you, Iorveth, we're cool.).

- Skyrim... kinda. Like most of Bethesda's more recent games, I actually enjoyed it at first. But then the repetition of the combat set in. Then I realised I didn't care about any of the narrative elements at all. Then I realised I was so rich that looting was pointless. Then the dungeons all started blurring together. Then I finished making my character how I wanted him and realised that I no longer had anything to work towards. Sadly, it the boredom and pointlessness that I remember rather than the fun that preceded it. It sure did have some lovely environments though.

That's not all that unpopular around here, actually.
OT: Persona 3 is, in my opinion, better than Persona 4. I think it has a good deal to do with which order you play them in, but for me the story and characters were far better in P3. Plus the whole 'fools journey' thing and religious undertones throughout the game made it seem really special for me. Persona 4 is a bit drab by comparison; though that is inevitable given the step down from 'saving the world' to 'stopping a serial murderer.' (Which I totally respect atlus for, not many devs would downscale like that)

Deus Ex Invisible War really isn't as bad as everyone made it out to be and really wasn't that bad a game.
Sure it's not the amazing gem that the first one was, but the same can be said for Dragon Age 2 (most probably another unpopular opinion). Neither game could be as amazing and groundbreaking as the original, but even still, they are both decent games that got way too much negativity just because they weren't the same as the originals.

Edit: Also, Mass Effect 3 is a great game. The ending was a bit crap yes I'll admit that but even still, people made out that the whole rest of the game was terrible. I for one really enjoyed the story and everything flowed well. People hated 1% of a game and instantly gave it a negative light when the other 99% of the game was solid and enjoyable.

Dark Souls: I'm not a fan of how they did their difficulty. The enemies themselves weren't too tough. The difficulty came from the fact that the game was extremely punishing and I don't think that's a good way to do it.

KoTOR: I really don't like KoTOR. I think it's just a bad game. I doubt there's any other game on my shelf with more mind-numbingly bland combat.

But worst of all, I prefer to play FPS games with a controller... on consoles! *gasp*

That EA would do a better job with Pokemon than Nintendo/Game Freak is doing.

And not because I don't like the new Pokemon or I think the games are getting stale.

Say what you will about the repetitiveness of the CoD series and Activision's practices, but I found Modern Warfare 3 as my second favorite multiplayer game right behind Team Fortress 2.
