Hey there,

Just thought I would throw out a somewhat over-specific question: can anyone recommend any good (relatively) unscripted action games for me to buy? For an idea of what I would like, see Max Payne 3 or the Last of Us E3 demo- certainly there are scripted moments, but not in overabundance, and the majority of the gameplay originates entirely from the player.

Thanks for any suggestions!

EDIT:
Sorry, I should have been more specific. I meant games (alright, shooters, if you want to be really specific) where success is more based around skill than scripted moments. If you will, a more "organic" kind of action. And yes, open-world games are fine, too. I have played most of the good ones, though.

Uh......not really, no :(

Most of the "unscripted action games" I can think of off the top of my head aren't very good because nothing really happens (or our definitions of unscripted are different). However:

Mercenaries 2
Just Cause 2
Crackdown (get the first one, it's much better than 2)
Saints Row 2 (I didn't play 3 yet)
Red Faction: Guerrilla Warfare

These are a few games I can think of and I'm sure you'll notice a theme...

For "not-open-world"

I've heard Bulletstorm is good

Brutal Legend and Vanquish are two good examples that come to mind. BL is kind of action/RTS and Vanquish is a third person shooter, but they're both definitely what I'd call 'action'.

I'm sure someone else can provide a good Vanquish gameplay video, but here's one for Brutal Legend: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YH2DFfk2MVc

Welcome to the world of the sandbox game. You should really try the GTA series for starters. 1 and 2 are freeware, while III through Vice City Stories are all probably on PC by now. Gangs, open cities, drugs, violence, and rock and roll all await you in the world of GTA.

You should also try wing commander privateer. It's a space sandbox game with no main story, where you can either choose to join a war, bounty hunt pirates, or run cargo. Whatever the case, the only boundary is money. Enjoy the universe.

If by unscripted you mean non-linear then you already know where to look. This can involve multiplayer, dynamically changing situations, open-ended level design, non-intrusive cinematics (which are rare dispite seemless "transitions"), and freakin' awesome chaotic physics ruining someone's day and making anothers.

Just Cause 2 is really good for that. Nothing is scripted but you can get into some kickass situations.
