I saw a couple trailers for some upcoming games... 'The Last of Us', 'Watch Dogs' and the more recent 'Sleeping dogs' (Don't worry, I was plenty confused by those two...)

Now, I've noticed that all of these games look REALLY good, even if they're just gameplay demos/trailers designed to look REALLY GOOD... Am I hyped or optimistic? I'm hoping that gaming is finally getting out of the rut of factory made copy-paste shooters and RPGs...

Thoughts, opinions?

I could consult the all-knowing Crystal Ball, but I think you know the answer to this yourself better then any one else does.

Pretty much this.

I assume your thread is really about asking who shares your excitement for this upcoming game rather than a genuine question about your emotional state?

I suppose I could have worded that a bit better, sorry about that. I'm trying to do 30 things at once and this question has been nagging at me...

Yes, are YOU hyped or optimistic? Cautiously optimistic? Cynically paranoid? What?

Hype instills expectations that may not come to fruition, while optimism is merely hoping for something, without truly expecting it. Which category do you fall into? Do you expect it to be a certain way based solely on the advertisements shown, or are you just hoping for it to be what was shown, but fully realize it may not be?

A fair question, but this is where my pessimism comes in. I hope to god these games turn out to be what they look like, but the rather large and booming voice in my head is telling me that "That's not going to happen, everything's shit now, you're a fool for hoping for anything good because quality is DEAD, DAMNIT. DEAD!"

I'm really optimistic about The Last of Us, Naughty Dog has proven that they know how to make games, even if I despise the Uncharted series I will still concede that the games are good (they wouldn't be so popular otherwise), although the Crash Bandicoot and Jak series were way better.

I'm hyped for Watch Dogs, from what we've seen it looks really good, it seems to be in safe hands development wise.. but I'm definitely riding the hype train for it at the moment, how it pans out, who knows, it's looks like one hell of a ride though.

Sleeping Dogs.. meh.. Didn't like the True Crime series, I've just come down from playing Saints Row 3 and from what I've seen this game looks like its going the 'gritty' road, which I don't like from my sandbox crime games, and other than ModNation Racers (which was average), United Front Games haven't made anything else (that I know of at least), so I don't have reason to be to excited about it.. so call it strong pessimism for this one.

Theres a few other games I am optimistic about though, Borderlands 2 and Dishonored being two I'm very excited to get my hands on.

if you get dissapointed by a new game...then you've really got no one to blame but yourself

Dude, I'm always optimistic. There are alot of things that can go wrong inbetween based on the team making it.

As long as it isn't being made by a bunch of idiots then it likely to be set in stone.

I'm more hyped for the Ratchet & Clank HD Collection than for any new games on the horizon.

Maybe that means I'll get pleasantly surprised by these upcoming titles.

CGI trailers certainly seem to have been perfected in recent years. The only game I'm hyped for so far is Guild Wars 2 though; I haven't followed anything else enough to be more than optimistic.

Sleeping Dogs looks like a game i would like. I`m still waiting for the first reviews. You could say i`m optimistic about this one. Clothes with different atributes, a fame level with different available skills for the triad or cop route, Batman style fighting system, slo-mo shooting, races, the option to expand your combolist, different activities (i`ve seen a game, Karaoke and dating so far), you can take over cars like in this odd Vin Diesel game Wheelman, open world.
From what i`ve seen they try a gritty story with over the top action and it looks damn promising to me.

little note: It looks over the top but not Saints Row3 over, over the top which is also a big + to me.

To answer your question, only really you can say for sure. "Hype" and "Optimism" are subjective states of mind, after all.

Personally I like to believe myself more optimistic than hyped-trained usually, though of course due to the nature of the beast this is not always so. I'd say while hype is expecting the best, optimism would be hoping for the best but expecting the worst.

I'm completely hype, I'm excited for the game and hope it doesn't turn out to be crap. I usually don't have much expectations for games, I just have faith the developer will do a good job. Though not for any of the games you mentioned, I'm hyped for Rising. I still try sensible about it, I know the gameplay is going to be awesome but I wonder how the story will go since that's always been P+'s weakness but it's also Metal Gear's strong point.

If I'm optimistic I feel like I'm expecting it to be better than something rather than just be good.

I miss the old days when you could just blame Molyneux for that.

There are some games that I am not looking forward to at all now such as Dead space 3.

However there are some which surprised me and now im looking forward to them such as Halo 4 and Lost planet 3.

I would say im more optimistic. I've just been ignoring most of the crap and I feel that I don't get as easily swept up in the hype now so I feel that im just generally looking forward to some of the games while just forgeting about all the other ones.
