Upgrading your PS3 and PS4 with larger storage

Looking at an SSD for my PS3.

Anyone try the Samsung 1TB 860? Does it work?

I've read that the WD Blue 2.5" 1 TB is best. Anyone try a Toshiba to save a few bucks? Do 7200s really run too hot?

Also, are PS4's still capped at 2 TB internal if you want to also be able to use the optic disk? Think a software update will fix it? Your advice is appreciated.

You need to cap it at 2 TB and also need to make sure you have a drive whose plate size is 9mm IIRC. You can technically add a larger drive, but it will effectively be housed externally, and the parts I ordered failed,. so I never got it to work.

The appeal is understandable, but kinda pointless even on PS4 since it?s bottlenecked by SATAII format. The extra time spent waiting for a game to load on a normal drive really isn?t much different than the time it takes to yawn anyways.

I read somewhere that since firmware 3.50 the system supports 4TB internal drives, so there's that, I guess, if you manage to find one that fits? Couldn't find official documentation on it just yet.

As for external drives, it supports up to 8TB, if you have one lying around somewhere.

PS4, yes. You don't need a powerbank to hook up a larger drive in an external case as the primary internal drive, and I've seen DIY jobs claiming to do up to 8 TB with no case modifications, but the housing inside the unit is still as far as I know limited to a 9 mm platter.

If you're not looking for a DIY job, I've read bad things about the Powerbank overheating and having trouble even reading the drive, but I don't have first-hand experience. I gave up and I'm running a 4 TB external and a 2 TB internal. Even for a pack rat like me, it's plenty of space for games, and the performance difference between games stored on the internal and external appears to be trivial because of the hardware. I don't remember what my internal is brand-wise, but it's done me fine so far.

I got the 2 TB internal. I think you are right. I'm going to have to grab a 4 TB external. I have PS+ and the free games alone of dang near taken that up. I hate that there are no rear USB ports for it. 1st World Problems.
