Hi guys

Since I can't remember of any place I'd get this kind of answer I hope I can get it here. I have recently purchased some USB connectors to make my own USB cables for my quad and my phone. Since the connectors are dirt cheap and a USB cable to charge my phone usually costs an arm and a leg I figured I'd use the rest of them to make my own cables as needed.

And that's where things get tricky... I can't find a proper cable anywhere on the internet except on one site and sending the cable to my country (Slovenia) costs more than the cable itself. I wanted to use an ethernet patch cable but I'm not sure if it would work since the cable is somewhat thicker.

Does anyone know if a patch cable would work or where I can find a proper USB cable to purchase it. I browsed through numerous web pages (Ebay and Amazon only provide some useless pre-made cables when searching) and I couldn't find any cable.

Cheers

You want 9 core data cable. Try searching for 9 core data cable or multicore 9 way data cable. That said the UK cable costs per metre ~£3 and a 1 metre USB cable is ~£1.

I've used UTP cable before to extend a USB connector, and it does seem to work but you need to be aware there are physical limitations to the standard.
Non boosted USB signal is only intended to work up to 10 meters of the shielded USB cable, with UTP I found you need to go down to 8m or less to have a reliable data transfer, but I did not test the maximum transfers so if you need a good connection always go for a shorter length.

But most importantly of all test mock up connections before soldering or wrapping anything, you don't want to tear it all up again if something went wrong.
