So, is there any good strategy or tactic to make using magic a viable option in this game? Given the friendly fire aspect of it, I find it less than appealing to use as a primary form of combat. Which sucks because I really want to invest heavily in that tree, and make Noctis this elemental titan of destruction.

The only real strategy I've come up with, is to open with my magic, while my friends are still close by, thus avoiding the friendly fire problems. Any other ideas on how to not zot my buddies?

No Magic is basically broken. It serves a utility purpose and little more than that. Typically you use magic as an opening attack, and only then when the magic provides a bonus for your party like Quadexp or something like that. Otherwise it isn't really all useful.

I went through the main game without ever really using magic, it's never really needed until the higher ranked hunts and that's only when it's made with some rare or semi-rare items.

If you want any tips on how not to ruin your party with magic, for starters, check to online store for the free holiday pack and hope it's there. Either the free one or the season's pass one gives you an accessory you can wear that makes it so your party can't get hit by your magic. Other than that, you're really left with your best judgement of when to cast it or not, except for blizzard, which just fucks everyones day up. I never really worry about collateral damage though when I started using magic for hunts and fun, I just spam high potions when needed. You can always just restock at the car if you get too low.

Yeah, that's one viable solution. Other is to make the party retreat from the combat far enough to cast (Ignis' Regroup ability could be handy for that)

I have never really used it except against the hunt with the 5 couerls because those things wreck you especially when you are massively lower level than them.

I dont think it has much place in general but from all accounts you can make it exceptionally powerful later on if you put in the time to farm the magic break items speck accordingly and eat the right stuff. Pretty much just 99`999 everything then straightaway I am told. Have not tested it myself but will soon be trying it as I have done pretty much everything now and would like to see it.

Wasn't there an item in one of the Holiday packs that nullified the friendly fire aspect of the Magic system?

I know that there are foods that can nullify elemental damage, so you could go through the trouble of trying to eat these kinds of foods a lot, but I personally wouldn't bother.

Personally speaking, I didn't use magic a lot, but when I did use it, I didn't care about my comrades being caught in the crossfire, they can take a hit and will die regardless of whether you burn them alive or not.

Think of magic like grenade... and think of the ai companion as nothing better than target dummy that can be killed and revive at will.

Essentially magic can be near useless (well good at clearing group of weak enemy) or completely bunker/broken if you use 3-5x time cast (which just cast the magic a bunch of time in a row) but kill your entire party (which really doesn't matters soon since you can get them back up really easily).
