Hey all, this year marks my 10 year being married to my wonderful wife. I want to do something special for her this year. So I am asking my fellow escapists who are romantically creative. What should I do? Here's the rules I need to keep it under $50 - $75. It's not that I am cheap, it's just that we don't make much and that's all I can budget for. So....any thoughts?

albeit cliche, but what about a romantic picnic on the beach or woods? doesn't cost much but you can still have that nice memory to share.

There are different women and they have different needs,
so it's really hard to come up with something, but i'll try nevertheless...

Picture with both of you in nice frames / something similar you can place on the shelf and watch.
(For example, my wife's biggest wish was to see Taj Mahal, so i've bought little, mahogany miniature of this mausoleum and promised that we will travel there).
+ 10 chocolates (each different)
+ a little poem written on decorative paper.
It may be something similar to this :

"10 chocolates
each for one year...
each for something else...

First, because i love you.
Second, because you love me
Third, because there's no one like you
Fourth, because..."

And so on, and so on... :)

Also : make this day special.
Shave, clean, wear nice clothes.
Take a free day from the work - if possible.
Go somewhere for a little walk and - if possible - show some place and say
"and here, x years ago i finally understood that everything i ever wanted is you, nothing and no one else".
Be f*cking nice, with extra cherry on top.

When ready give your present, say something nice, like :
"i know it's not much, and you deserve more, but i couldn't think about something better because i'm thinking about YOU all the time"

If your wife is true lady then she will appreciate it.

If you're good at art, draw a portrait of her. I did that last year and it went down brilliantly (I'd spent all my money on festival tickets, I was being cheap).

I dont like poetry. I guess I'm not a true lady. Then again thats hardly news to me, lol.
No, but that is a sweet idea if your wife likes that kind of thing.

Also, I always get hypnotised by heart-shaped boxes of chocolates, theres something I just find adorable about them.
Picnics are a nice idea, especially if you have some woods or a beach near you, somewhere that looks nice but you dont need to pay to get into.
Try and include something relevant to what your wife is interested in.

You take one thing out of the context. I'm suggesting All-in-One solution and i believe that pretty much every lady will appreciate something like this - maybe not exactly THIS, but, you know... :D

Of course, I jest. :p

... Poetry does make me cringe though.

Naaaaaaaaaaaah ! :)
There's poetry and poetry.

Self Pity

I never saw a wild thing
sorry for itself.
A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough
without ever having felt sorry for itself.

Oh, I do like some poetry.

I just dont like love poetry, for some reason.
It always sounds too cheesy and portrays people as too perfect. I mean, I love my boyfriend, doesn't make him fart rainbows or pee wine.

I don't know if it counts as advertising to post the link but if you want I can PM it to you.
What I'm doing is getting hand stamped aluminum bracelets made for each of us. The bracelet will have the first lyric of a song we love and that describes us well on one, with the last song lyric on the other, and our initials on the inside. You don't have to get two like me, but the message is customiziable. You can get a song lyric or a line from a poem or the latitude longitude coordinates of a place that's special to both of you. I'm actually quite psyched about it.

If it sounds interesting I'll PM you the link to the service I'm using

Ha ! Same here.
it seems that we share same trait : lack of awe over things considered "by Heavens, OMG i'll say", so to speak. ;)

No exactly an answer to your question, but my thought has always been "Why does it have to be on Valentine's Day? Yes, this is the commercialized, expected day of the year for people to be romantic, but why not do it on some other day? In my experience it goes over so much better when it is out of the blue and unexpected. This also helps play into the limited budget part as you don't have to worry about inflated prices and the like.

Insofar as actual ideas, it would depend on your gals tastes. A few things I have done:

- Cook her dinner
- A play/concert/something of the sort
- Flowers are always good -- especially not on Valentine's Day
- Wrote a short novella telling the story of how we first met/fell in love

Just some thoughts. Best of luck!

As an answer to your question, we just celebrated our 10th anniversary a couple of months ago by renewing our wedding vows and I want this year's Valentines to be uber special. I always joke with my wife that Valentines day is a "Hallmark holiday." This adds to the fun factor because she is expecting a "cards and chocolates" level response. :)

I did this for my girlfriend on our year anniversary (I think). I wrote a whole lot of things that I love about her and listed them on paper. Of course, this is something not so...extraordinary, but my girlfriend loved it. She didn't know that I loved so many things about her (and I love more, but just didn't write them).

I used to write my girlfriend poems every week or every other week, and I still write sometimes. I try to leave the cheesiness to a minimum, though.

But 10 years is a lot, and I think you'd want to have something a bit more special.
