One thing that's been bothering me lately is a small argument I've had with myself. What is the vampire? The reason I've been arguing is that there has recently been a lot of medias about vampires and all are depicted differently. So I wondered if the audience of "The Escapist" could help me find the general opinion of vampires.

The rules are simple:
1. Name your definition of a vampire and the reason for your choice
2. Don't post negative replies about a fellow members choice, it is thier opinion and not yours

In my opinion the most "vampire" vampire [http://www.google.no/images?q=Alucard&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:nb-NO:eek:fficial&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=X2CnTLvFJIjqOaCq6aAM&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CDAQsAQwAA&biw=1280&bih=620] is Alucard from the manga Hellsing [http://www.google.no/imgres?imgurl=http://www.starstore.com/acatalog/Hellsing-1.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.starstore.com/acatalog/Starstore_Catalogue_DARK_HORSE_COMICS_GRAPHIC_NOVELS_1909.html&usg=__E2Y4ylDT4cPoSZALRpEy8kDY7LQ=&h=545&w=400&sz=85&hl=no&start=0&sig2=qrvPRWW1U-0lIAEySqUwgA&zoom=1&tbnid=jgL3XJ20WoS_bM:&tbnh=161&tbnw=116&ei=oGGnTIW4B8SOjAfzovnlDA&prev=/images%3Fq%3DHellsing%2Bbook%2B1%26um%3D1%26hl%3Dno%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:nb-NO:eek:fficial%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D620%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=718&vpy=57&dur=2276&hovh=262&hovw=192&tx=121&ty=159&oei=oGGnTIW4B8SOjAfzovnlDA&esq=1&page=1&ndsp=19&ved=1t:429,r:4,s:0]
My reason is that:
1. He has the right amount of pride and insanity to pull of incredible dialouge and personality.
2. When he drinks the blood of a human and kills it he can summon them forth as his minions, as blood is the currency of life.
3. He is a commander of blood, and if there is blood outside of a human in the vicinity he does not need to it, but rather it flows to him at his command.
4. He is immortal and can regenerate from any wound. No use with sunlight, a cross, stake or guns. He can regenerate even if his body totaly whiped out.

Nos and Drac. The classics. Just out of spite from all of these "vampire series's" popping up, I felt like reading that one, really popular vampire book with that sexy guy. That's right. Dracula.

Edit: Basically, burn in sun, pale skin, canines, bat powers, widow's peak, attractive, Transylvanian, need blood, need permission to enter houses, and hate garlic.

EDIT EDIT: Right, the stake.

A vampire should drink blood to survive, burn in sunlight and be unable to enter the houses of others without permission. Why do so many pieces of vampire fiction forget about that last piece of lore?
They're really gentlemanly that way. Also, a bit of garlic never hurt anybody, right?

Ghoulish undead creature with the ability to shape-shift and deceit, it needs to feed on humans thus spreading it's illness or killing them. Weaknesses to all the common evils of the undead, such as daylight and divine intervention of any sort.

There is NO OTHER DEFINITION, I don't care how many pre-teens need sex-fantasy material.

REGARDING GARLIC: It was really just a plot device at the time.

In before someone mentions Twilight.

Edit: Now that that's over and done with, I believe they should be undead and drain blood. I mean, that's what makes them... them, right?

Nosferatu and Dracula. They get harmed by sunlight and wooden stake and they drink blood to survive like what the original lore depicts.

To be honest, I've always found the garlic thing a little silly. Of all things, why garlic? I mean, it is horrible raw but if I was creating a fictional monster I wouldn't put use a seasoning as a plot device to defeat the thing.
Well, it's another reason to love pizza. Go clam and garlic.

The "gentlemanly" attitude was just a ruse to lie and deceit, Vampires are fairly feral in their "true state", as exemplified by Dracula's Wolf form

Generally Ann Rice/World of Darkness version. It's the version that always seemed most accurate with the actual mythos that was heavy on secrecy and terror mixed with erotic thrill.

I only really use the 'suck blood' thing for vampires - because some of the other stuff is a bit ridiculous. Garlic is their weakness? Really?
Vampire's don't suck! They scrape and lick.

Undead, dies in sunlight, has to drink blood. As long as you have these, you can at least say "vampire". Anything else is optional, making you even more of a vampire, but those three are what make you an ACTUAL VAMPIRE. Blade is an exception...

Optional features that make you more vampire-y:
No reflection
hypnotic powers
Bat-form
Must sleep on soil of your homeland
Must be invited in
Garlic weakness
Weakness to holy items
Either having a werewolf as a minion or enemy
Alternate monsterous form

A vampire is an abomination against God and nature, a corpse that still clutches to life, a zombie capable of intelligent conversation, immortal so long as it feeds the blood of the living. It is weak against garlic, wild rose, mountain ash, pure water, sunlight, and God. A human may be turned into a vampire by drinking a vampire's blood, and can only be turned back by the death or re-humanization of the vampire whose blood it drank. Any appearance of charm or sophistication is the result of hundreds of years' practice. Capable of supernatural acts including the power to transform into various forms and the entrancement of potential victims, it can only be killed by the destruction of its heart or the burning light of the full sun ('full sun' meaning direct sunlight, as moonlight, being reflected sunlight, has no effect).

I awlways liked an alternative. Something i saw more as a new age vampyre and added to was my version of a vampyre for a fiction story my friend wrote with me.
