What the title says, who do you think took the best beating from a video game you've played? (Cutscene only, but quicktime events count.)

My vote goes to Solid Snake for MGS4. Snake vs Liquid Ocelot in Act 3 was just...it hurt to watch. So did the Microwave Corridor in Act 5...

Raiden from the same game gets an honorable mention. Raiden vs Vamp was really...well, it's good that Raiden is a cyborg.

Edit: Forgot to mention...it should be relative to the character's power. For example, Dante from Devil May Cry has been skewered, blown up, and other assorted fun things many times, but it never even manages to phase him, so it's not really 'punishment' for him. More of a..slight annoyance.

Oh that's easy; Max Payne. It's literally in his name.

By the end of both games he's pretty much dead. First game opens with his wife and baby child being murdered, second opens with him in a hospital delirious and full of more bullet holes than a stop sign in small town Texas.

The guys a human pain collection machine, that's what makes the games so fun. Healthpacks? Regenerating health? He don't use either, he just chomps down on pain killers so he can try to stumble to the end of the game without collapsing in agony and despair. Plus at one point he suffers the ultimate agony when in a drug fuelled nightmare he realizes he's a videogame character. Poor bastard! That Movie probably hurt like hell too.

The dad from Heavy Rain. I forget his name. But he just gets ground, beaten up, and tossed aside and he keeps going when he's bleeding from his everything with no end in sight.

He has no super powers.

He has no protagonist powers.

He has no back-ups.

He has no respawns.

He still kicks ass.

Drake in Uncharted 2.

He gets shot, punched, betrayed, hurt, and gets stuck in a train wreck in the middle of a snow.

I've got a good question - if getting stabbed, shot, burned, slammed, and altogether take almost as much punishment as that one version of Alucard, then how come Dante can die so easily when you're actually playing the game? Reversely, Drake gets shot a million times while in game, so how come he gets shot in the stomach once and all of a sudden he's hurting badly? As opposed to the other two million rounds and couple of helicopters he'd taken up to that point.
Because (supposedly) it would be boring to play invincible Dante. I think it would be frickin' sweet. Have something tear an arm off, then just regrow it and punch them in the face with your new arm hard enough to knock them three rooms away.

Also, according to Naughty Dog, the 'regenerating health' is actually luck. The bullets and sharpnel actually miss Drake, and the killing hit is the only one that managed to hit him.

Of course, that doesn't really explain multiplayer, but I assume all that is non-canon.

Ethan Mars. I was coming in here to say the exact same thing. For all of Heavy Rain's faults, Ethan still fits the criteria here perfectly.

Well, I tried finding a video showing Ethan Mars' exploits, but was unable to come up with anything. However! I know where to find MGS4 videoes, so you can compare in my place!

And the video immediately after that one (4.2) shows the end of the 'fight'. Much later in that cutscene, Snake also gets caught in an explosion which horribly scars the left(?) side of his face.

That's the Microwave Hall. (Almost immidately after that, Snake fends off about a hundred Scarab drones, then fights Liquid Ocelot, who is in near-prime condition, in hand to hand combat. Liquid Ocelot is the guy who kicks the crap out of Snake in the first link.)

Edit: Oh, I forgot to mention about Snake. At that point, his body is so deteriorated that Naomi stated a normal man would have been physically incapable of even moving and that Snake kept going on pure willpower.

Oh definitely Ethan Mars.

Loses one son in an accident, then his wife divorces him. Then his other son gets kidnapped, he gets blamed by the police, and in order has to drive into oncoming traffic and crawl out of a crashed car, has to climb through a tunnel filled with glass and then get severe electric burns, has to cut of his own finger, has to shoot and kill a drug dealer, and then he has to willingly drink poison. All while being chased by the police and suffering from mental trauma that has him for a long time believing he is doing this to himself, that HE is the killer and has murdered before. And even if he did everything right, he will still lose in the end unless others have managed their own 'trials' and are there to back him up in the final fight.
And he is not a superhero, has no powers at all, no weapons, and has no group or organization helping him.

Hmm... I don't suppose the Nameless One from Planescape: Torment counts? Might be cheating, I'm not sure.

Dunno really, the character who popped up into my head as soon as I saw this topic was Mason, out of CoD: Black Ops.

Seriously, he served in the military for ages, throughout the game he is tortured for information he doesn't know, his head is also messed up from obviously traumatic experiences. I feel sorry for him really.

Raziel from Legacy of Kain. Sure, he's technically immortal, but not immune to pain. He spends centuries burning in a way that sounds quite similar to Hell. Then there's all the mindfucking that happens throughout the rest of the series. Poor bastard can't catch a break. Not even in the end.

Totally agree with everyone you mentioned, and to add to Raidens punishment in MGS4, he also saved Snake in the ship crushing scene. I admit I cried at that part, I thought he was a goner.

The only other ones I can add is the Big Boss torture scene in MGS3.

Cloud Strife, lol he has been tortured and shish kebab'd by Sephiroth quite a few times during the whole FFVII series (Including game, spin off games, anime, and movies. Note, the skewer scene is in the complete blu-ray version of FFVII, not Advent Children.)

Anyone going into Silent Hill! Ha, seriously that in itself is enough psychological punishment to last 10 lifetimes. (If I had to pick one character out of all of the Silent Hill series, it would be James from SH2. It is my fav SH, yes, however I reckon what James discovers about himself is pretty horrifying.

Doom Guy. That man can be taken down to 1% health, bleeding through every pore of his body but somehow, he recovers so long as he finds a box full of medical equipment.

Kratos easily.

Has to kill endless armies of monsters and undead. Killed his wife and kid, covered in their ashes forever.

He has literally been to hell and back.
