Hello everyone, I am currently doing a thesis studying whether Video Game play Motivations have any impact with Addiction and Aggression. I am currently looking for respondents over 18 years old to take part in this study by completing a quick survey to determine your gaming motivations and attitudes. It won't take more than 15mins of your time and any information taken will be kept confidential. I will be keen to post the results when the study is completed if you are interested to know the overall outcome!

If you are interested to take part please follow this link here:

Thanks very much for your time!

Answered the best I could, hope it helps.

To be honest I thought the questions were about character/story design in games (because you mentioned motivation)...

Yes well some of the motivation questions related to character/story as you say, there are a variety of motivations. The ones you specified fell into the category of Escapism (playing to: relax, role-play, story engagement etc). Theres a mixed bag of motivational constructs in there including Competition, Socialising and Perfectionist. Besides that concern were there any problems you feel needed rectifying? ie Question was confusing, badly worded etc?

Thank you for your contribution as well its much appreciated!

Dark Souls
Fair enough.

If you're wondering, I ask that of any new members asking us to do surveys like this because too many of them dump their homework on forums and never come back. I'm not willing to use my time to help people who are only there to Spam the forum and you coming back to respond let's me see that you are (at least for the time being...) not just spamming the forum with your homework. Survey is being completed now.

EDIT: Done. As for the survey, I think some of those questions in the beginning don't really work (like "I like to talk to friends when gaming") because it greatly depends on what I'm playing. Am I playing Ni No Kuni where I'm paying attention to the story and whatnot because then those friends need to go away and stop talking to me or am I playing a game of Madden where I will gladly talk to whoever since I don't need to pay attention as much? As demonstrated, my answers for many of your questions on the first page would change (and hell, the second page as well as I do much better about the "anger" questions when I'm not competing) depending on what we're playing...

Top 5 huh, thats a tough one:

1) Dark Souls (seperates the men from the boys this game)
2) Team Fortress 2 (crazy spin on fps but done very well)
3) Golden Sun (v old jrpg on gba, but if youve played it youll know why its a classic with its godly graphics on a 32bit machine)
4) Pokemon Blue (childhood memories)
5) AoE2 (classic again, still holds up well to this day find!)

Normally these surveys are very poorly worded; the work of a desperate student looking for meager justification in pursuit of something beyond the standard BA. However, it's interesting how you frequently rephrase questions in a slightly different way. If that was intentional, then it was definitely more interesting than the usual stuff people ask. I dare suggest that you're not pursuing marketing but something a bit more...brainy :)

Thats a good policy you got there and I totally agree with it. From my way of reasoning if youre going to request help from people at least engage with them seeing as they are helping you especially that they dont know you personally so them willing to assist is a big deal to me. Thanks very much for taking the time to try the survey, much appreciated!

Edit: Ive noted down your concern regarding that. Luckily its still early days so I can still modify it but you are right, it does depend on the type of game you play where some motivations are more invoked than others. Not to worry tho I will work out a way to make the questionnaire abit smoother, perhaps concentrating on one genre would be more ideal.

Filled it in. Although it felt a little bit of an anticlimax putting "Postgraduate" down as education level considering I just finished a PhD. Was hoping for another option even though it still comes under that category. X-D

Noticed one little thing:
"I find it important to understand as much about the a video games mechanics as possible"
Presumably should be "about a video game's mechanics".

Good luck with your study.

Regrettably, I had to answer no to all the questions about in-game chat. You see, I used to LAN with Luis Suarez, and you can guess his reaction to getting no-scoped from distance.

There ya go! I've tried as best I can to give general answers about my gaming habits overall, as opposed to my particular habits at any one time in my life (the 14, 24 and 34 year old versions of me would end up filling in very different answers if I'd tried to be specific).

Answered as best I could.

On the question about whether playing games has deprived me of sleep; it has, but the same is true of a wide range of stuff I do. Reading has had the same effect. I just tend to put off sleep as long as I can regardless of what I'm doing.

I actually had the same issue with that question, I do put off sleep to play videogames, but it's not as a result of addictive behaviors. More like I irrationally think that sleep is a waste of time and try to squeeze any time I can away from that.

I have the same attitude. Having to sleep usually just frustrates me.

Thats an interesting comment actually and I can relate to what you're saying. I dont identify myself as addicted as well but do tend to put off sleep often for that extra hour or 2 for gaming. From the studies I've read, alot identify the act of putting off important activities (sleep, work, sports etc) as a part of a cumulatation of reasons that can lead to a serious case of addiction. According to them sleep isnt a waste of time haha. Think of addiction as a scale from 1-10, It depends on how much you agreed with the issues thats mentioned in the addiction section then we can get a rough idea of each persons level of addiction. Of course not all scales are perfect, and the one Ive adopted from another researcher though popular are always open for improvement :)

Thanks to all the people who have taken so far, the number of respondents is growing faster than I ever expected. You guys rock every single one of you!
