I had a discussion with a friend of mine about the idea of stories in games and I came to the conclusion that every single game has a story. Even an individual round of Street Fighter tells a story through each hadoken thrown and every kick blocked it provides a narrative.

Really what I'm asking is for someone to name a game that has no story because I can't think of a single one.

No game has no story. Games have LITTLE story, but there's always a little bit to move it along. Yes I'm sure you know that, but I'm filling in for Captain Obvious today

Pong? Unless you're developing a huge scenario in your head about a simulated table tennis match to save the world it really doesn't have a story.

The first one I thought of was pong but due to it's simplicity providing so much possibility (for example an intergalactic war based on the propulsion of a large mass of energy), that I couldn't say it doesn't have a story.

Even if you take it's base gameplay a story can still be told.

That's a story.

Stacking blocks is a story no matter how weak it is.

Gameplay in itself is it's own form of story. No matter what there is a story there. Learned that in one of my game design classes and it really blew me away when I realized that. Interestingly enough this is the second time I talked about this today.
