I always found it odd when a game that has a bad base idea tuns out really good. Honestly, the thought of Red Dead Redemption's idea of an open world, western, action-rpg sounded pretty bad. (Mainly the western part) Other games like this were 3D Dot Hero Game for the PS3 which was basically a zelda clone but origionally it seemed like some sort of weird rpg with a graphic idea instead of a real idea. Both of these games turned out either incredibly good (my opinion) or generally good (most other people's opinions).

Seriously, everyone thought that would suck.

Square proved them wrong.

Mario RPG. It doesn't seem like a good idea, thinking about it. Mario had only really done platforming at the time. Mario RPG turned out great though.

If you think about it, Psychonauts.

A kid, cursed to die in water, runs away from the circus to join a summer camp for psychics and ends up in a weird race to save the world from psychic death tanks.

If left in the hands of anyone but Tim Schafer, that would immediately bomb and ruin.

Honestly when I first heard about Left 4 Dead 1 coming out I was like "that's dumb...SPECIAL zombies? Only normal zombies are cool. That game will crash and BUUUUUURN." I was totally wrong...that's now one of my favorite games EVER.

Come on, julian, you don't get to /thread yourself.

And on topic, I'll have to say Little Nemo the Dream Master.
Who would have thunk it was friggin' awesome.

Thinking about it, most of the biggest series in gaming are based on either bad or drug induced ideas. A plumber that saves a princess from a giant turtle dragon thing uses mushrooms? A super sonic hedgehog that is trying to save woodland creatures from a fat scientist? An action series starring a mute scientist that beats things to death with a CROWBAR? Do any of these sound good in the slightest?

I would have to go with Mario. Come on, its about a plumber who has to rescue a dim-witted princess from a spiky shelled turtle every year or so. And it turned out amazing?! That is the ultimate right there.

MOTHER 3. "We're gonna make a game about a psychic kid that teams up with another psychic kid, a thief who walks with a limp, and that kid's dog? With transvestites who try to kill them to teach them new powers? And we're gonna actually try and make the player, god forbid, FEEL something emotionally?!"

And it's one of the best games ever made.

Yes. A mute scientist that beats things to death with a crowbar sounds FUCKING AWESOME.

And Sonic and Mario were pretty much exempt because nothing had a plot back then. And that wasn't the point anyway. The point was "jump on things" and "run fast" and "don't die".

You have it, even though it was never released outside of Japan?

Can I... "borrow" it?

Modern Warfare. CoD jumping into the modern age was a huge risk, and while it was a better idea than more WWII games, it was a risk.

God of War. Loosely ripping off greek mythology has been done to the point that I honestly don't expect anything of it these days.

Wolverine. It may just be because of the goriness of the gameplay, but that game was fantastic. First movie-game I've ever finished. With the exception of...

Spider-man 2. Swinging mechanic. That is all.

I've actually noticed the things that are the most weird are often the most well executed, when done well. A billionaire alcoholic builds an suit of armor in captivity to fight his way out and decides to save the world. A man is hit with a gamma bomb and turns into a force of nature when angry. A clown with a knife and a tommy gun fights a ninja with a shitload of gadgets. An indestructible furball with indestructible bones and claws murdering everything as he goes. A man in a nice hat swearing at games as his little white guy in a nice hat rapes a black spiky thing.

Well Mario has the ideas of a basic 2D platformer. Half-Life (which I hope is what you are talking about or else you're playing a very similar game) has probably the worst idea on paper but some of the most amusing moments I've ever encountered in a game.

Don't you speak ill about Kingdom Hearts 2.

That one was my favorite and one of my all time favorite games.

I'm sorry if I'm speaking (typing) out of context but this is about the ideology of the game not the gameplay or the likability.

I know, but I'm just saying since he was dogging on the other KH games, I'm kinda sticking up for them or at least my opinion on them

Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II both sounded terrible but I think that it turned out pretty well. This surprised me because I thought it would turn out: Final Fantasy + Disney = Turn-based Mickey V.S. Sephiroth

I liked them too, but I was really just poking fun at how most of the fans are the girl in this comic.
