Posting a little gem someone made that I found:

"Look , i like gears of war 3.... BUT ITS NOT GEARS OF WAR

games like halo and gears are unlike games like crackdown or crysis or unreal tournament...

instead of adding to gameplay, they remake it everytime.... i can say i dont like gears of war 3 because u know what im beast at it, but its a different game... same name different shit

just how like halo reach is so much different then the other halos... instead of creating sequels, game developers re do the intire experience, instead of changing a couple of weapons, they add new game modes and different stats to each weapon... not saying thats a bad thing but look at games like DoTa , where the game has had tons of copys , but they all stay true to a core game mechanic... games now a days change not slightly but greatly, and its not bitching or trolling that im stating a fact that is games change.

look at the difference between halo 1 and halo 2 , or gears of war 1 and gears of war 2

halo 1 and 2 changes completelly by adding duel wielding and tons of new game mechanincs, like getting rid of health....

gears of war 2 changed alot by making weapons completelly different and makign the game slower... doesnt mean the game is bad but it does change in the name of balance... balance which " hardcore gamers" always scream for.... LOOK AT GAMES LIKE DYNASTY WARRIORS, ITS ALWAYS THE SAME BUT ITS ALWAYS FUN!

so im just righting this to tell people that its fine to play old versions of games and not like the new ones, because they can change so drastically and still hold the name of things we love and appreciate."

Thoughts on this? typing aside, I think it's kind of a flawed outlook.

What does the Escapist look for in sequels and successor games to the ones they love?

Me personally...a sequel has to improve or perfect basic mechanics or starring gimmicks in their games.

If you can't enhance the gameplay any further then there is no point in making a sequel.

Make a new game with new mechanics or whatever and sequel up when tech has improved enough to make something better.

are you serious? if Halo had changed any less we'd still be playing with the CE engine...
what you're describing isn't a sequel, it's dlc.

W@W is definitly an example of a "remake". They took the COD4 engine, repeated a number of the missions (such as Ghillies in the Mist with the Russian Sniper in W@W) but reskinned for WWII.

I loved COD4 SP as much as I hate W@W SP.

On the other hand, since Gears of War is a continuing story throughout the three games; doesn't it make sense to keep changes to a minimum and preserve the overall aesthetic of the game?
