Wait, the samurai won? I watched the first half and there was no doubt in my mind that they were gonna say vikings.

The spartans have a couple advantages. The phalanx formation would give them an advantage on a larger scale and the spear is a nice penetrating weapon.

Both warriors live to fight, the Spartans are more disciplined but the Vikings have better armor and weapons than the Spartans.

In a battle? Hard to say...

Probably the Spartans, but I doubt it would be the same every time.

Vikings had berserkers. That's right: guys that go TOTALLY FUCKING APESHIT on command. You can have all the phalanxes and sissy bronze spear tips you want, you can't mess with a bunch of burly aryans in irreversible kill-mode.

One on one I believe a Viking would win, but in a proper battle the hoplite's discipline and teamwork would win the day. Berserkergang is worthless when your charging an impenetrable wall of shields.

Note: It annoyed me when the show called hoplites "Spartans." Spartan is a nationality, hoplite is a soldier trained to use a hoplon (the large, round shield).
