Greetings Escapist community! I am using a survey to gather data in order to write a paper for one of my college classes. My topic is violent games and violent crime, so I thought, what better place to ask than the Escapist forums? If you have a free moment, please click the link and complete the survey, it's only 12 questions. Thanks!

If anyone has any trouble filling out the survey for some reason, please send me a message.

Update: use this link instead. http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/WEB22CLSQTKTGZ Apparently there's a 100 response limit, so I have to make a new one to keep getting results. Thanks for the feedback so far guys!

Update 2 & 3: Use the first link. I have to keep making new ones to keep up with the volume of responses.

Just filling it in now, I hope your class goes well.

EDIT: I hope the quantative nature of a number of your questions still allow for a broad range of answers.

I am sure you are already, but do remember to acknowledge your questionnaire is about self-perception of the relation between computer games and violence, as opposed to whether there is a causational link or not.

Filled it out to the best of my capabilities.

I just realised, reading the last question, that the more i play violent video games, the less i want to be violent in real life.

Done. A problem with your survey is you ask if I own a firearm, if FPS affected my choice to buy a firearm. However, there's no option that I don't own one. Another one is no consideration of the nationality of the person taking the survey, which can have a lot of bearings on how they respond to it (e.g. people own guns less in the UK than in the USA due to legality of guns).

You have a good point. I was assuming that a bit much from my own American perspective. I see now that one question is a little off, but answering no to a previous question which at least covers it. Thanks for pointing that out.

In the US those words are frequently used interchangeably if though they aren't the same, sorry about that. If you just mentally switch out "college" for "university" there it will put the result in the category I intended.

If any Brit's get fluxed by the college/university thing, i would just roughly guess what the US equivalent is- i'm second year uni student, so i put two years of college.

All done~ Good luck with your paper!

I actually did a speech on this last semester. Surprisingly enough, all but 1 on my class of 22 believed that video games do not cause violent behavior, whether or not they themselves were gamers. I found that very interesting.

And the one who did say that she believed they caused violent behavior pointed out the way people get agitated whenever you try to bother them whenever they are playing games. However, I found an article that said that behavior like that can more or less be caused by the adrenaline rush people get when playing fast-paced games, much like the way athletes get revved up whenever they are in the middle of playing. That agitation tends to drop off after 4-9 minutes of not playing.

Also (not that I'm trying to tell you how to write your paper, lol), if it fits in there you might want to look at a couple of Extra Credits episodes and what they have to say about this. I think in one they pointed out that a lot of these studies don't cite the types of games people were playing whenever they were analyzing brainwaves or whatever. That is very important, because of COURSE playing a high-stress, fast-paced game like Call of Duty is going to give a bigger adrenaline rush than someone playing some sort of kids game. That is to be expected, and that basically renders the games incomparable. That's like comparing the brainwaves of someone watching Saw to someone watching the Carebears Movie.

although i understand that, it still doesnt mesh up well with British education, there is no option for those who have only completed collage (between High School and University) also most university course are only 3 years so i still dont know which i should do
