I have VLC media player and I just purchased the 3rd season of How I Met Your Mother on DVD. However, whenever I try to play the DVD, it comes out looking like this:

The VLC website says it doesn't need a codec to play DVDs.....what can I do to fix this?

Try opening the VIDEO_TS folder with VLC directly. Sometimes VLC doesn't automatically locate it properly.

It could also be the copy protection, in which case you could use software like AnyDVD [http://www.videohelp.com/tools/AnyDVD] to decrypt it.

Have you tried other DVD's and did they give the same result? As far as I've seen these kind of things, it's more likely the DVD (finger prints, smudges, scratches (allthough you said you just recently purchased it) perhaps?) It probably isn't a codec problem, otherwise it wouldn't play at all.

Here's something that sounds a bit like the problem you have. Hope you get a bit wiser from it, good luck. http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=63355
