While skimming around Kongregate, my eye happened to catch some Latin, which confused me. Why is this game's name in Latin? That little picture does look cool. I guess I'll play it, I've got time to kill.
Vox Populi, Vox Dei(a werewolf thriller), by Weremsoft, is a flash game you can probably find on most sites. "So why review it?" you say. Well, I would respond with, "Because it's awesome." First, let's look at the simple description of the game, "Start a bloody quest to rescue the girl that hurt you from the hands of the planet's dominant race: The werewolves." It does seem very simple, kind of like the synopsis of an old Nintendo game.
The game opens at the title screen. The title proudly displayed at the top, and below it, "start" and "credits." In the background you see a gray city full of pixilated werewolves. When you start the game, you see the main character, that delightful blue fellow doing push ups. His green friend shows up, and, communicating with pictures in speech bubbles, informs him that the pink girl, who supposedly broke his heart was kidnapped by werewolves. The main character then leaps to the left and the game starts.
First, let's take a look at the graphics. If you love good, ol' fashioned pixels, then you will probably like this game. The backgrounds are full of loving detail, even while being different shades of gray. Unfortunately, there are only two different enemies, one of which is more of a boss, but they still look great. The only thing I didn't like is that one, the humans (I'm guessing the main character is human) look a bit weird, and two; some parts of the background have many more pixels than other parts, most easily seen when going up an elevator near the end. My favorite part of the graphics by far though, is the blood. Unlike everything else, the blood is not gray, it's red. And it is everywhere. When blood starts flying out, it will land on the ground and start dripping through, maybe even onto the floor below you. It's pretty cool looking. Overall, the graphics are great.
The awesomeness of the blood.
Next, of course, is the gameplay. When I first looked at the controls, I was perplexed. It's a simple "arrow keys to move, space to jump," type of thing, but then I saw the "hold down and press space to attack." What? "How does that work?" you may be asking. Basically, you crouch down, and then jump, but instead of a normal jump, you pounce forward at the enemy. Surprisingly, it works very well. And when you land on an enemy he slides forward, leaving a nice trial of blood, and you simply hold down space to make your little guy rip his face off. You have to be careful though, because you have to hold down space for a few good seconds before he dies, and any other werewolves around will kill you on site. Lastly, there is the stealth aspect of the game. At any time, you press control to become invisible, and werewolves will not be able to see you. You will lose the invisibility if you bump into a werewolf though. So there are actually stealth aspects of the game too, and it works very well. You'll have to figure out which guys you have to kill, which ones you have to sneak by, and so on.
There are some parts of the game that just feel ridiculously awesome, despite the minimalistic graphics and sound. I love this game. It is excellent, and probably the best flash game I've ever played. And don't forget, it's free! Go, go, go! Play it right now to see for yourself. Yeah, it's short, yeah it's weird, but you have no reason not to play it. http://www.kongregate.com/games/weremsoft/vox-populi-vox-dei-a-werewolf-thriller
