Can't comment on the price of parts over there in NZ, but I imagine its similar to those in Aus.

If you have $2000 to spend, I'd probably go for an i7 processor, 6gb of DDR3 and a GTX 570. That's based on what I could get in Aus though.

I disagree. The i7 costs more than a solid gold holy grail. Get this instead. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103849

First of all, wait until the new, non-messed up Sandy Bridges.

I'd recommend a P67 board, 8gigs of DDR3 @1333, a GTX 570 or 6970 (depending on price at the time of buying). You should still have quite a bit of skrilla left over for other cool stuff.

The other thing about the i7 is that, godly as it is, the hexcore design is kinda poor for gaming since most games won't use them all. I can't offer any great advice on upgrades unfortunately, I've been out of the hardware race for some time now and everything seems to have changed.

atleast upgrade the motherboard DDR2 is pretty rare or you can save more money and build a new rig from the ground up

He doesn't even mention his motherboard.

OT: I would start again for the most part, and if you can't do it to yourself take it to an actual computer shop and just tell them what you want it for and what your budget is, as opposed to buying a pre-determined machine from a chain store.

he mentioned he currently runs DDR2
Yeah, that's RAM; and a lot of people still use DDR2.

my PC still uses DDR2 I went with it to the store and the shopkeeper said its being replaced with DDR3 and the fact that DDR2 costs more

It is, but it's not particularly urgent, and DDR2 isn't pretty rare.

(And for all that is holy, please use punctuation.)

With that money and a pocket full of sense: I'd build a new rig. i5 or i7. It depends on the prices there. You could go some way with buying a CPU like E8500 or whatever is the top of Dual Core line, and with GeForce GTX 460, but in a longer term, I'd really go with building a new rig.

As for the case; it depends if it's good and big enough.
