Im just wondering if theres still some true 40k supporters out there who enjoy the table-top wargame.

I have always enjoyed the 40k franchise, But the original has always been at the top of my list. You may rather click on a mouse button to order your Blood Ravens Space marine squad into a battle formation against the Dreaded Tyranid hordes. I prefer to charge my Red Thirsted Blood Angel Tactical Squad with a heavy bolter and a rocket launcher (Costing: 110 points) at a squad of 15 Hormaguants to lock in combat so that unless those Genestealer 20 inches away wants to Shoot me with his poison cannons, he's gonna have to go through my Baal-Predator with A flamestorm Cannon and side sponsons with Heavy flamers (Costing: 140 points).

Thats all im going to say on the matter, Offer up your opinions, Hopefully there is still some true 40k players out there

I've been to Games Workshop a couple of times, and while I thought it was a cool place, I neither have the time or the money to get into the tabletop game.

I do really like the lore surrounding the series though, and Dawn of War II is very fun.

I use to play (SM and IG) but as time went by the shop i went to went downhill(too many good people left only to be replaced by total asses). Also when the hobby got too expensive I had to call it quits. I love 40k but when its $300USD min to play the game (army, books, paints and such and then you have to buy more to play bigger/better matches) I cant really enjoy it at that point. Don't get me wrong I still play the DoW and enjoyed it and I cant wait for Space Marine. I just dont think Ill be going back to the table top any time soon unless GW can really work on their prices.

...your thread title implies a question, yet your post is akin to an advertisment for the table top...? :p

Regardless, I agree. The table top game is without a doubt more fun.
BUT.
Not all of us have $3000 to spend on plastic miniatures. Wouldn't be so bad, but GW seems to overhaul the rules so often that your army will be worthless after a few years. Codex Creep at its worst.

So, to anyone wanting to get into the hobby, I say;
NOO! NOOOO! WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T START! ITS PLASTIC CRACK!

Video Games, much more economical ^_^

Trust me, if I had the time and money to play the Table-Top I definitely would.

And your definition of 'true' WH40K player bugs me as the Dawn of War series are released with permission and logo of GamesWorkShop.

I've got twenty thousand points of IG and three full companies of marines. I used to live and breath the table top and still table in it. Dawn of War is a great game but will never give me the same joy that the table top has. Why? Because I can't go into the Dawn of War army painter and construct a complex detail shaded paint scheme, I can't micro-manage the exact composition of my squads, and I can't construct pages and pages of background material (which actually nets you bonus points at tournaments these days). So even though the games are good and give a nice slice of the universe they just dont give the same outlet of pure, grimdark creation that the tabletop does.

Years ago I enjoyed both the fantasy and 40k table top games but it just got to expensive over time. Today, Im not so sure its a good game for the aging generations. Even for mine, born in the 80s, it seems like a redundant concept a lot of the time. I personally think the setting, while awesome, is better used in video games.

The huge cost tends to be the widest accepted excuse Ive heard for not playing the game. I mean think about it, my 2k point ork army cost about $300 in models plus painting materials and I had to do the painting myself. I can only imagine what the cost could be with inflation over the last 10 years

Today video games are just cheaper and IMO usually more accessible. I dont have to go out and find a group that plays warhammer when there are many online communities that are easier to find and play with

I've been playing 40K since the early 90's, right when the 2nd edition boxset came out. I have quite a few thousands of points of Blood Angels and Imperial Guard, and I play at least one battle every week. I also sleep under a huge Imperial Eagle banner, have my bedroom wall lined up with 40K posters (maps, tech specs, etc), and have an Imperial Eagle tattooed in the back of my neck.

I love the game, and its setting is my favorite SF universe.

That said, I also have all the PC and console games. But the tabletop game will always rule my universe.

Edit: Also, OP, you may have come on a bit too hard. 40K video gaming is different from its "parent" hobby, but it's a worthy spin-off, even if because it drew a lot of people into the tabletop game after it stagnated for a while after 3rd, early 4th edition.

Edit 2: To everyone saying they haven't started a force because it's too expensive, well... it's true that it costs more than a "regular" hobby, but you don't have to strain yourself all in one go. Of my two 40K forces, my Blood Angels are almost 20 years old, and I started my Imperial Guard about 8 years ago. And I've built them up slowly, sometimes in big chunks, sometimes only buying stuff very sporadically. The best way, the more economical, is to buy the starter box with a friend, and split it 50-50. You get two good starter forces there, which will allow you to start exploring the game, along with dice, measure tapes templates, an abbreviated rulebook (which is FAR handier than the regular one, since it's much smaller in size) and let you get to trying out a couple of games. After that, the rest will come automatically.

And hell, in this day and age, there's something I didn't have as a kid, when I started: online communities (such as this one) that are more than happy to help ease rookies into the game.

Not Really, Im just saying that all you have to do is click on a squad in DoW and you attack it, Its much more complex (and better) On the Table-Top.

I haven't actually played a game of 40K in ages. I still keep up with it and talk about it with one of my friends. Hipster Dark Eldar is one of the funniest things we talk about:

"Yeah, I play like 3rd edition Dark Eldar? Back then they were properly underground you know, now they've sold out with useful and cost-efficient units and wargear. Forget them, man."

"Oh, you've got Chimeras? I'm into like, open topped skimmer transports. Armour value 10 on all sides. You've probably never heard of them though."

"Yeah, my whole army can move 24 inches a turn if I want them to. Those regular Eldar posers have nothing on us. And fuck those humans, we worshipped the chaos gods back before it was cool. You know we made Slaanesh? Yeah, you're welcome."

I used to collect and paint, but with the recent price hike and the switch to carcinogen filled resin models over pewter, I've given up.

I really wanted to get into tabletop but was never able to because it was just too damn expensive.

The video games are good enough though, Dawn of War is the greatest RTS I've ever played and I'm still playig DoW II with friends and still love it. I've had some great memories with Dawn of War.

[sub][sub][sub]I also loved Warhammer 40K: Fire Warrior[/sub][/sub][/sub]

Genestealers can't shoot anything guy, they have BS 0. Also you calculated the points on that Tactical Squad wrong, you would only have 5 models for that 90 points and you need 10 Marines (which are 16 points per additional model) in that Squad to be able to take a heavy weapon, also you can't have both a heavy bolter and rocket launcher in one squad. So for 170 points you would have a sqaud of 10 marines with a flamer and either a rocket launcher, multi melta, or heavy bolter (assuming you take those because they are free.)

But back onto the topic I play both the tabletop game and the videgames. I prefer the tabletop game though. I have a lot of fun with the building and painting of the models. Also the playstyle of the tabletop game appeals to me more.

I'm a huge Warhammer 40k fan. I own dozens upon dozens of books and have many of the more recent video games, including both Dawn of War games with all the expansions and the DS version of Squad Command, a fun little turn-based tactical game. Besides Skyrim, Space Marine is my most anticipated upcoming video game so far this year.

Despite my fandom I have never played, nor do I have any interest in, the tabletop game. It's too expensive and I can't be bothered to learn the complex rules involved.
