I've been wondering, are Warhammer and Warhammer 40k in the same universe? or are they different universe just with a similar name?

I originally believed that 40k was just Warhammer in the future, but I don't think it is now. I believe Warhammer is your typical medievel fantasy realm, whereas 40k is supposed to be the future of our current RL timeline.

My (limited) understanding is that Warhammer has a fairly generic fantasy setting.

The more popular Warhammer 40k is set in the 40th millennium.
It features Space Marines, hordes of flesh eating bugs, and interstellar travel.

AnOriginalConcept has the gist of it basically.

Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 are completely different settings. Warhammer being a fantasy setting, a darker fantasy than most out there, while 40k is sci-fi. GRIMDARK sci-fi many of the fans would say. The only thing that really connects the two is the Warp/Chaos/Immaterium, but that's it.

I do not claim any expertise on the subject. But the fact that warhammer basically involves all these factions on one planet, it would seem to suggest that it is a different universe than the 40k, in which orks originate from another planet. (also the Ork vs orc spelling)

I think they are separate universes but I cant claim knowing it for sure. They do seem pretty similar though with Chaos, Imperials and orks. I prefer 40k to be honest.

Well basically I think its a matter of the fantasy setting is basically a slightly darker clone of every other fantasy game ever created. The 40k universe has a little more feeling in it and is interesting because there really isn't any good guys.

They were in 1st edition (I think, ill check) but have since been separated. The only real why they are linked is by the Warp.

Not really the only real similarity with Chaos are the deamons and the chaos gods. The Empire and the Imperium are two different things (Some state troops don't have shoes).

I don't believe there has been a canon answer. I heard once that the 40k universe is enclosed in a magic bottle which is in the Warhammer fantasy universe. I've also heard that the Warhammer fantasy planet was in the 40k universe, but got sucked into the warp or something.

I've heard that about fantasy being a planet in the warp thing too and Sigmar was meant to be one of the missing primarchs too

I believe that it used to be canon that they where indeed in the same universe with Sigmar being hinted at as a missing primarch. However i think they have since dropped that idea and now they are just alternate realities or something.

It's hinted at that the Warhammer world is just another planet in the 40K universe.

I'm not really acquainted with either settings [nor do I wish to be, but that's another story], but I used to entertain the notion that the fantasy setting takes place on a single planet, hidden away somewhere in the 40k Universe and acting as a microcosm of these larger events.

They're seperate universes, they it's suggested, and indeed entirely plausible, that the Fantasy world is located within the 40K galaxy. Sigmar being a missing primarch is bullshit though: read Heldenhammer to see how impossible it is on so many levels.

Warhammer has been around since the 80's. If anything, every fantasy game has ripped off of it...

It has been confirmed since some edition or another, that these two universes are fully seperate. There is some overlap due to laziness, but the times of shared universe has passed. Other changes include dumbing down of khornates, removing Malaal, space marines -> spess mahreens, abandoning of chaos dwarfs and other stuff.
