Warhammer online Europe.... let's discuss!

so, if you are at all interested in Warhammer online, it's possible that you may have been witness to the colossal meltdown that happened yesterday.

let me outline a few things, so people don't argue about the facts:

from the top.

Mythic, the company responsible for this promising MMO, gave the European reigns to a company called GOA, who are responsible for the european website, servers, and registration systems. they are in effect Mythic's ambassador for europe.

for a long time (months), Mythic and GOA have been selling 'collector's editions' and 'standard editions' of their games, as a pre-order, through retail outlets and websites..... the main incentive for pre-ordering the £39.99 box set was a product key which allowed you "guaranteed access to the open beta".

thus, the Beta was marketed differently from a normal one.... more of a mass 'headstart'... a way for keen players to get the first look-in, and play before anyone else.

the collector's editions (and later the standard editions) sold out completely from every retailer, in a short space of time, in both Europe and America. that's a LOT of beta testers with guaranteed access.

leading up to the opening day of the Open Beta, Mythic and GOA also gave out a load of Beta Keys for free as promotions and to guilds and the like (something which made the people who had stumped up £40 a bit grumpy). this added to the number of testers who wanted in.

yesterday was supposed to mark the simultaneous start of the Open Beta. at *.30am (GMT) and in the afternoon in america, all beta servers were scheduled to go live. the American servers under Mythic went up without a hitch. the European side descended into chaos.

here's how it panned out very simply. GOA had left the beta key registration until the day of the fact, so rather than letting people register ahead of time, everyone was registering and wanting to play all at once, at 8.30am. i should add at this point that PEOPLE HAD TAKEN WEEKS OFF WORK FOR THIS. lol.
within minutes it was obvious there was a problem. the registration part of the website was down. this prevented anyone with a 'guaranteed access' key from playing.
also, at this point, the patching tool for updating your game client to Open Beta was broken.

anyone who had participated in the CLOSED beta (weeks earlier) was able to get into the game without any problems, as they already had accounts and didn't need to register through the broken website.

so, with over 200,000 people unable to play, chaos descended upon the poor forums.

the irony is, while GOA were completely unable to fix their website problems and registration servers (meaning people who PAID for access to the beta were unable to play), for the entire day, the privately run forums for the game were able to cope with 200,000 angry people and actually *upgraded their servers* on the fly, to cope with the increased traffic.

what people are bound to start discussing is GOA's lack of communication for almost all of the day. no ETA was given as to when the problems would be fixed, so thousands.... THOUSANDS of people sat at home doing nothing except pressing the 'refresh' key, to see if the problems had been fixed.
this was coupled with the strange nature of the faults with the registration part of the website, which did occasionally let someone in... needless to say, this person would then post on the forum, thus inciting the thousands of people to stay there, endlessly refreshing on the offchance that they might bizarrely bypass the problem.

i was round a friend's house yesterday, who had the Open Beta client, and a Key (which he had purchaced a collector's edition for).... and it was a bit of a running gag throughout the day, going back every few minutes and checking for updates or to see if he could log on..... at 2 in the morning though, we were still there. the website had let him log in numerous times, but each time, he was thrown out of the registration at a different stage. at one point he was at the confirmation stage, when all that was required was the click of an 'OK' button, and an email would be sent to him. no such luck though.... click and ..... error 414.

as it stands right now, one day and several hours later, the registration servers are completely down, and will supposedly be put back up at 3pm (GMT) today. not only that, but apparantly the 5000 closed beta testers who managed to get into the game (for free, i might add) were thrown out of the game in the early hours of the morning because the GAME servers had a system-wide shutdown too..... is it me or are GOA not passing the ball like they should?

i have no doubt that "error 414" will go down in the annals of Warhammer online history. that, and the whirly hypnotic loading-screen of DEATH.

discuss your experiences and/or gripes!

Huh. Well, I just ordered my game yesterday actually... and I got an email with some registration keys. I was aware that it gave me a headstart, but I thought it was a few days at best? Do the problems you speak of relate only to those who purchased the CE or ordered a long time ago?

This shows a level of commitment that i just cant measure up to.

All these people sat at home waiting until the servers were fixed so they could play.. When they could have just done something else to pass the time and then try again a few hours later, or hell even the next day.

There are times that I wish there would be a mass plague of logic which would cover the entire earth.

LOL This is the funniest thread I have read in long time. I was actually going to sign up for this "Open Beta", until I realized that the beta was not open at all. Instead it was just Closed Beta II (you have to pay to get in). I said to myself "Screw this, I'm not paying to beta test a game - they're bound to have a 10 day free trial like WoW sometime in the future." The reason I say this is because most of you crybaby Europeans have forgotten one very very important detail - THIS WAS ALL A TEST.

Wow GOA sure f$@&ed up though huh? I don't think it's possible to have a worse launch day - OH WAIT A SECOND THIS WAS NOT THE REAL LAUNCH DAY. Hello am I the only one who knows the meaning of the words beta test? The fact that you're sitting at your computer hitting the refresh key and seeing Error 414 or whatever is all part of the experience you signed up for when you registered for the 'Open Beta.' In effect, YOU GOT EXACTLY WHAT YOU PAID FOR so you've got nothing to complain about.

the headstart thing is actually seperate..... anyone with the collector's edition gets access to the full final release of the game a couple of days before everyone else..... i'm hoping they've fixed the problems before then. lol.

yeah, some people are pretty obsessed. me and my friend, however, sat around watching films and chatting, and generally doing stuff we'd normally do.... with the occasional check to see if anything new had happened on the forums. i imagine a load of people did something similar.

well that's not strictly true....... in Europe, any free product you recieve that comes with something you've bought, legally counts as being paid for.

in the product details, the description said 'guaranteed open beta access'..... and as of this second, nobody has really had that yet. so they've not got what they paid for.

of course, if it comes online this afternoon like it's supposed to, people will be happy, but it's still a real Duck-Up so far, lol.

As a closed beta player (who, I might add did not play yesterday and infact doesn't have the client installed at this time) I am not surprised to be honest.
GOA have been dropping the ball repeatedly and consistently on the EU side of things.
To be honest GOAs "succes" with Dark Age of Camelot (mythics first MMO) should have told them that using GOA for this one was going to be nothing short of a disaster especially since WAR generated much more interest than DAoC ever did.
They managed to mess that one up, and now they're expecting them to suddenly do well on a game that's going to be much larger than their previous one?

I dread launch day, an MMO using the Warhammer IP should technically be more popular here than in the US, since the following for it is that much larger, but with GOA at the helm I predict chaos on a far grander scale than witnessed on the Open Beta launch ruining the game's popularity on this side of the ocean, while the launch on the other side will probably go just fine.
Many EU Closed beta players were actively looking to get US versions of the game to make sure they can play on the undoubtedly better run Mythic servers rather than have to deal with GOA. Many of these players also had experience with GOA from playing EU Dark Age of Camelot and to say that that experience had not been positive is a massive understatement.

@poleboy: Early acces is a few days before launch, this is the Open Beta period which is independent of that. Those keys were mostly given out to early pre-orders and at certain promotional events. So unless a Open Beta key is also included with your order, I doubt you can acces that one.

That flash site is aweful, I have to agree. So slow it's almost unbelievable. Especially when you compare it to the smoothness of the US site run by Mythic.

I avoided playing the open beta yesterday for that exact reason, wont even attempt it today either and I'm a closed beta player.

Also it seems to be a trend in western MMO's at least the ones I have played to give the EU community a second rate service. I don't know if the EU market share is all that much smaller then the US one or if language localization is to blame but it seems to be the norm.

I actually made a post with information on how to obtain a free EU WAR key but my post only got 30 views and no replys so I assumed no one was interested. They are out of keys now though unfortunatly.

The thing is that it was only advertised in the WAR newsletter and the EA site so not very well done.

Registration is part of the beta too you know. Gameplay isn't the only part of an online game like WAR - the nitty gritty dirty stuff under the hood like server crashes and bugs - they are the things that you paid to beta test. Instead, I think you were just expecting to go in and be able to play it right away, when in point of fact you SHOULD have expected problems.

You're guaranteed to beta TEST the game, but no one ever said it's guaranteed to WORK. That's the WHOLE POINT OF A BETA - if everything worked then they wouldn't be beta testing it. How is that hard to understand?

It was a rough few days over where I was.

I went from asking nicely, to asking firmly, to moderating folks, to finally insta-suspending people who just couldn't keep their anger in check. I saw death threats, I saw people threatening seriously to physically harm the community managers, and I saw people talking about literally storming GOA HQ.

While it's true that GOA messed up the EU Open Beta launch of the game, there was some really deplorable content posted on the forums where I do community monkey work.

I understand why people were mad - the NA Open Beta by comparison was just about flawless, while the EU folks had to wait for a few days. It was a dark day in the community and I hope both the players and GOA can move forward having learned how to deal with this situation.
