Are there any fellow Etrian Odyssey III adventurers in the crowd? I thought I'd try throwing this out here as well in case there were people that could make use of it. This is taken from an Atlus posting on Facebook:

Check out this skill calculator our amazing fans made for Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City for Nintendo DS. This planning tool will come in handy in preparing your party for their adventure through the Labyrinth. Use it to test out the many ways you can apply your skill points to develop your party members into the fighters/healers/magic users you want! All credit and thanks goes to Waveform for making it happen.

Some additional details, derived from the Atlus forum:

Happy holidays, Atlus Faithful!

To celebrate, we here at Waveform have released a fully featured Etrian Odyssey III Skill Calculator application for Windows in the hopes of making your life in the labyrinth a little bit easier. ;)

Atlus was, in their usual amazing and community-supportive way, kind enough to give our tool a shout-out in their Twitter and Facebook feeds but we thought we'd post about it here in the heart of the Etrian Odyssey community itself.

Download Here! [http://www.fileplanet.com/217860/210000/fileinfo/Etrian-Odyssey-III-Skill-Calculator-]

You can use this calculator to not only plan out your party and perfect builds, but to pass those builds around to other people as well. The application uses lightweight XML files for saving and distribution and, as an added bonus, the XML file itself is completely readable for those that don't have the skill calculator installed!

What do I mean by "fully featured?" Well, here are a few of the things the tool offers:
  • *Comprehensive details on the game's less-than-translucent skills
*Create or recreate your EO3 characters right down to selecting their avatar artwork
*Informs you if the number of points your build uses will require sub classing, retirement, or boosted level caps
*Tracks skill point expenditure individually across common, primary, and sub class skill sets
*Save and distribute your builds in lightweight, legible XML even to people that don't have the calculator
*Session memory: want to change your class temporarily to check something? It will remember where all of your points were spent when you switch back!
*Further updates planned: we'd like to make changes based on what you, the users, have to say!
If that's not enough, I suppose you could always just download it to look at all the pretty Etrian Odyssey III artwork we packed into it. ;)

We hope you enjoy it and share your ideas for super-powered builds or ridiculous team combinations with the rest of the community! We'd love to hear them ourselves.

Naturally, the team welcomes feedback. We'd love to hear what you think! If you find bugs, let me know. No, seriously. If you find bugs I wholeheartedly intend to put my boot up the [insufficient data] of one of the developers. It's what I do around here. If you have any problems, suggestions, or even just comments, you can reach us at: waveformfeedback@gmail.com

Or I suppose you could just post right here, since you've already come this far.

Happy holidays, Faithful, and may your days in the labyrinth be a hair less than lethal (but just as thrilling)!
It's advertisement, in a way, but why not spread the word of a tool for a game that people might be playing here?

Especially a face-melting game like Etrian Odyssey III. <_<

So, for those of you in the Escapist community playing EO3, how does a tool for planning/distributing builds sound to you? Is it the kind of thing you'd use or just a neat idea on paper?

Never heard of it... but now I am sure as hell gonna look into it.
I can't help but feel like that constitutes some small sort of victory, right there. It's a niche genre but the team are all big fans of difficult dungeon crawls.

amazing! i fucking love these games! the whole genre even. played the dark spire?
The team gave that one a whirl a while back with mixed results. The purely random method of leveling didn't go over too well. Personally, I prefer nods to the old school with modern design sensibilities, which The Dark Spire felt like it lacked.

That, and the terrible mapping system. I may go back for another try when I have more time though.

True enough. The PSP also offered Class of Heroes but it suffered many of the same issues. I'd love a few more of these titles in the vein of Etrian Odyssey's sensibilities. Happen to know any others?

Re-posting from the Atlus forums:

We meet again, Atlus Faithful!

Waveform is proud to announce a major update to the Etrian Odyssey III Skill Calculator [http://www.fileplanet.com/217860/210000/fileinfo/Etrian-Odyssey-III-Skill-Calculator-] for Windows. What kind of update? Read on to find out.

  • *Added "Shogun" hidden class to primary and sub class lists
*Added "Yggdroid" hidden class to primary class list
*Added the fantastic avatar art for both of the above classes
*Data fixes for Gladiator, Monk, Bucaneer, and some Ninja skills
*Made the tool more user-friendly for TAB navigation
*Want to continue saving and sharing your build files? Old files are still completely compatible with the new version!
So tell us, dungeon crawlers: have you found your perfect build yet? If so, are you keeping it to yourself or do you want to share it with the rest of the community? Post your XML build files somewhere for everyone to see. Better yet, link it here and show us what you've come up with!

Keep on being awesome, EO3 crowd.
