Fellow Escapists, in what way can one become witty? I have never seen myself as being witty being that I often talk radnom jibberish to which no one cares to which I hope someone giggles to which a lot of the time it does happen and I am pleased. But I was watching some Blackadder and I thought he is one witty man and is henceforth very cool. I know this would probably knock my popularity down like what a Wrecking Ball does to a block of flats. (Was that witty? Probabaly shite I don't know I can't define it either, oh the tragedy). Anyway can anyone help me? I just realised, how could I call Blackadder witty without knowing what witty means? I just thought what he says is along the lines of wittiness. Anyway my fellow Escapists give me the key to the holy gate of the Witty so I can further my knowledge on the human psyche or mind or whatever it is you call it. Tar very much chuck!

Watch some comedians, especially ones that are being heckled.

Most people are just born that way, so it's hard to become witty.

Wit is as much about delivery as it is about being smart or funny. Being able to speak cleary, having control over your tone and facial expression these are all important factors. I'd work on those first.

Memorize a bunch of clever responses to a broad selection of social interactions, then spring them when the time is right.

Practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice.

Also, read comedy. Don't watch or listen to comedy, READ comedy.

Wit requires you to naturally know the funniest, most intellegent thing to say in response, instantaniously. Unless you're Paul Merton, Stephen Fry, Ben Elton or Oscar Wilde it's unlikely you'll be up to Blackadder standards. However, as long as you always try to think funny thoughts you'll eventually get the hang of it.

Become sarcastic. It works well.
People say that it's the lowest form of wit, but those are usually the people who just got owned.

Its not necessarily the "Lowest form of wit," but it is often abused by people who are trying to go from being socially awkward to, "Cool," at the expense of being a decent person. This kind of sarcasm tends to become cynicism, which is an absolutely miserable state to be in. I suggest you avoid it if possible.
Good sarcasm, however, can be epic, and can be good in the arsenal of any witty person's banter lexicon.

Don't talk.
On the rare occasion that you do talk, make what you say a single sentence, and all about what your interocular was talking about rather than bring new material into the conversation. And make sure it has good timing, and preferably not at the other's expense.

Chances are, if you like to ramble, you're going to have a hard time with this because people will think there is something wrong that is keeping you from speaking. Allow people to grow accustomed to this new demeanor anyway. If you do it right, I grantee you'll seem at least calculating.

Wit tends to just happen; for example, upon my mother giving us a lecture about Canada geese mating for life and never finding another partner if their first dies, my dad, usually boring, looked up from his dinner and commented: 'That's why there are two barrels on a shotgun then'
This is actually a good example; the father didn't say a word until the right moment, and interjected something extremely relevant to what the mother had been saying.

Steel Crab, may I ask what he did after he said that bit of wit?

Well we all burst out laughing at it - and then my mum bopped him on the head, which was even funnier. And sarcasm is definitely not the lowest form of wit. That, my friend, would be LOLcats.

I'm a dry comedian, so sarcasm is pretty necessary for me. I don't make stupid comments which intentionally bring people down though, I just use it to entertain my friends, and viewers when I'm acting.
