Weird to think things?

So I was visiting my sister last night to meet her boyfriend of the moment (can't even say week with her), and after the meal we were sitting in the lounge room having a cup of coffee and my sister and one of her friends were talking about a dog one of them got and suddenly this thought popped into my head, which I voiced.

"What's a dog?" I asked, and then clarified at the strange looks I got, "I mean what's a real dog? You get different breeds by choosing the traits you want and cross breeding to get them, and when you've got what you want, say for example a German Shepard, you start breeding true, humans have been doing that to dogs and other animals for thousands of years, but what is the real dog, what's the one closest to what dogs were before we started mucking around with them?"

Everyone sort of looked at me, and then my sister said "Ignore him he's always been weird" and they all laughed. I grinned and ignored it, making a mental note to look up the dog thing when I got home (still need to do that), but it has made me ponder something else.

Is thinking about stuff like that weird? Is find stuff like that interesting and wanting to have a conversation about stuff like that weird?

If so are you weird? and also why the hell would anyone want to be normal, sounds boring.

It sounds like a bit of a leap from what you were discussing before, that's all.

BTW, people have believed it to be a wolf, but there's some arguments about it being a jackal. We are unlikely to know for sure.

Call me weird then, because I'd love to discuss stuff like that, it's definitely stuff I'd enjoy to see on here as well to discuss.

Sure, it might be a bit deep at times for you to bring up like that, but it's certainly not weird to discuss things of this nature.

Not weird at all. If anything, that kind of mentality is necessary for scientific development. You have to ask questions in order to get answers and knowing more is (almost) always a good thing. Depends on the people you're with whether it's a good idea, though.

It's just an example, my family has always treated me like I was weird for bringing up things like or the latest science stuff at the dinner table, it's fine when I'm with friends, but "normal" people tend to think me weird for pondering questions like that.

Yeah I was just on wikipedia, looks interesting.

Nope, not at all. Not many people think about stuff like that though... I do, but I consider myself insane, so I am not the most reliable source. Normality is boring.

Nope, not weird, though I guess most of us keep it to ourselves more.

By the way, the original dogs were wolves. The selection for more docile traits led to more doglike features, such as the shorter snout and etc. I'm no expert.

Are you familiar with Plato? It sounds a lot like his Theory of Forms, which says basically there's an ideal object for every object we interact with. For example, a dog would have an ideal form that is the epitome of "dog." As I remember it, the form does not actually exist in space or time, but only as an ideal that we reference. Here's a link to the theory in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theory_of_Forms#What_are_the_Forms.3F

Let's see...

{1} Can be.

{2} Might be.

{3} Oh, definitely.

{4} Because they hate fun.

Also, the closest thing to a dog before mucking about with 'em in breeds and such is a wolf that doesn't try to rip your throat out. Ta'.

thinking about wierd stuff is good. it creates new ideas. if everyone was normal we would be beating each other with stones cause no one had a wierd idea to put the stone on the end of a stick.

It certainly has a sort of philosophical value. Re-evaluating your perception and beliefs about the world is the thing that drives any kind of development, as well as personal growth.

As for weird thoughts, I sometimes get completely nonsensical spontaneous thoughts, like combining things that don't go together. They sometimes evolve into something bigger.

Like when I came up with the word 'Timeclock'. It came out of the blue and seemed like utter nonsense. Now it lingers in my mind as a game idea, a developed concept.

OP, you should go to art school. We literally talked about this exact subject a couple weeks ago, because it pertains to semiotics (study of signs/symbols) and the limits of language.

Similarly, what is a tree?

Thinking about random things isn't that weird. Just the other day I thought "why the hell do we wear ties?" - turns out there isn't a good reason, just complacency and tradition...

On a more philosophical front, there's always a problem of defining things because words in themselves aren't the same as the actual thing and people's perceptions of things vary...

Always keep that youthful curiosity, it will serve you well.

You're one of us. One of the smart people, that the normal close-minded people don't understand. Being normal would be terrible. Get yourself to an art school, and you won't have to put up with these pricks any more.

"Weird" is often the first impression regular folks get of innovative or observant people. Don't hide it--embrace it! If not for people who dare to take a closer look at what everyone else passes by, and who don't take things at face value we'd be no better than the cavemen. Looking at everyday things in a different light is one of the primary catalysts of innovation.

I always think of peculiar things. When I'm ever high up like in a building I always think about how far a paper airplane would go if I tossed one off. That qualify as weird? Theres tons of other examples that I cant remember at the moment.

Not many people think of stuff like that, but for those of us that do it can be fun. If I'm having a conversation with someone I'll normally have a thought like that every five minutes or so, it can help keep the conversation going for a good long while if I'm talking to someone I like.

People like your sister, willing to dismiss others who dare to think a little differently, annoy me no end. Nobody's discovered a miracle cure for cancer yet, and if we all thought the same way we'd just end up re-testing the same compounds every five years. Humanity needs the rare few able to think on a totally new direction to take us forward, yet so many people are conditioned to hide these 'strange' thoughts because other people arn't comfortable with making that mental leap.

Everynow and then I wonder if it's possible someone could read my thoughts, okay so that sounds crazy, but I like to scream "MONKEY SLUT!" loudly in my head to see if anyone reacts.
