Old news for me. I predicted the shift to Full Nelson DRM service years ago.
I anticipate getting a lot of use out of my old collection after that, and not really buying new games if the company selling it doesn't want to give me some long-term securities for it (and in fact, they'd rather I didn't so I'd be more inclined to purchase the carbon-copy sequel at full price+DLC).

I'm interested to see how much money they seem to think they will make with these new ideas that are circulating the rumour mill.

I know people will still buy them but some won't.

It seems that the gaming industry is doing everything it possibly can to put people off buying.

I agree. I know these are all rumours so far but I do hope that no one at either Microsoft or Sony honestly thinks that this will not affect their sales. Maybe not in a major way but they will be losing out.

I do think though that quite a few people will not bother with Next-Gen consoles if all these rumours of constant internet connection requirements or anti used games systems turn out to be true. add that to probably having to pay 500+ dollars/euro/pounds whatever, as soon as they come out and I can't see much money being made off of this.

the sooner Gamestop dies a horrible death the better.
Yeah, I hate dedicated gaming shops. The sooner we can only buy games on a national scale from box stores the better off we'll be!

So I get to pay for the right to play and it is not ownership in any sense of the word.......

But no really this is still just a pipe dream at the moment and a very bad one. This is an expensive hobby to begin with but when they attempt to take control fully of the pricing they will fail. Hell this could be considered borderline illegal due to monopolizing the industry.

A huge part of the casual crowd entering this medium is the pricing structure from used sales. If all games immediately went to the $60 permanent pricing they would kill the industry. More expensive games means people would buy less games overall thus draining a lot from the medium.

Is digital the way of the future. Yes but it will take smart business model (*cough* steam) from a smart business (*cough* valve) for this to work properly. I mean even with Netflix and other movie streaming services people still buy dvds. Not as much as they once did but the choice of physical copies is still available.

Ya, cause who doesn't like buying something, then owning it forever whether they like it or not unless they want to just throw it away.

Ever bought a used car? Used furniture? How about lived in a used house? Unless you buy everything new.......and I mean EVERYTHING........you are a dirty hypocrite.

Back to the topic at hand.......we as gamers need to fight back. I'm not sure how or when it will happen, but it will. Something like steam closing will probably do it. And then the fight to actually own our games again will commence.

Sorry, but I dont see gamestop being the problem as much as they are the scapegoat. Granted a scapegoat that is making a tidy profit, but a scapegoat none the less. Thing is people really tend to forget that Gamestop is just a much a part of the industry as anyone else, but this notion is starting to tread on personally well worn ground. Ive said all this before. I clearly digress.

Thing is... In reading the comments on the article, you get this long string of people crying "Yeah, they do that, I wont buy it" But I sincerely challenge the resolve of these claims because if people actually genuinely felt this strongly about it, we would not have accepted Project 10$, DLC, Always on DRM, or any of these other negative prerequisites that is leading the industry to this point.

Sure its easy to say you wont buy it today when the new consoles havent even been announced, but its a LOT harder when the release date of The Elder Scrolls 6, CoD MW5, Halo 5, Final Fantasy XV, Dragon Age 4, Mass Effect 4, or any other big name title comes.

But I will say this, I HAVE kept myself from making certain purchases based on conviction. I basically have only bought 1 ubisoft title in the last 5 years (from dust, and had I known, I would not have) as just one example. So I know that if I claim I wont buy if it wont support used, I know I wont buy it. Which, if it DOES get to that point, Hey, awesome, Now I can work off the backlog that is keeping me from finishing up my major minecraft project.

I see Three possible outcomes from this.

1. All the bile everyone has been spewing about big name publishers like EA and Activision will stop being imaginary bullshit and we'll see the beginning of the dark empire.

2. With used games and piracy nullified, we'll see games go down in price and possibly become more accessible to newcomers (provided internet connection becomes a general thing like electricity is)

3. Most hardcore console gamers will migrate to the PC where cracking digital games is easily done and PC Gaming will simply be the more convienient choice at that point.

Being a PC Gamer, I have the luxury of getting to sit on the sidelines of console gaming and observe how it evolves without much of it affecting me too badly to be a problem. So I'm waiting with curiosity.
Haven't you heard? PC gaming is going to be dead soon...

Isn't all of this just speculation? : \

Anyway, I guess if the price of games goes down this can't be all that bad. The distribution costs will be far less, so as long as the game companies are willing to pass on the savings to their consumers, they should drop in price.

The major downfall to this is download times and bandwidth usage.... I like being able to get a game and not having to wait several hours before being able to use it : \ Plus the inevitable service crashes will bring about some pretty nasty sales blackouts to just about every developer out there.

Eh, W/E.
As part of the PC gaming master race [I love using that term. I can't do it with a straight face sorry] I have no immediate problems with this.
If they do eventually try to end up with a subscription based pay system for every single AAA game, then there is a simple solution for me: Go Indie.

Glad to have warned. But honestly, even if it had not been a ubisoft title... the game is pure unadulterated tedious shit. Seriously, it was not worth its 15$ USD release price tag.

So essentially consoles will become PCs then. Eh, I VERY rarely buy used anyway so doesn't really faze me. Actually if they instead do a digital distribution thing it'll make things easier for me instead, so if these rumors are true I hope that's the route they decide to go instead of just one-use codes in the box or something.

Also Gamestop kind of had it coming with their business practices. Seriously, dropping the price by like $5 for a used copy and only giving like $15 to someone who sells the game back is just asking for it.
