Well hot damn 2017!

I don't know about you guys, but I frankly thought 2016 sucked for game releases. I can only really think of one or two games that really stood out as being great experiences from the year, Final Fantasy XV, and CIV VI. Otherwise it was a year for the FPS fan, Overwatch, Battlefield 1, Titanfall 2, Generic CoD 46, Doom. I suppose if you are a super FPS fan then maybe 2016 was good. Oh and No Man's Sky happened.

Yet here we are in 2017 and holy balls did 2017 start off right. Resident Evil 7, Yakuza 0, Tales of Berseria, Nioh, shit on a shingle do we have an ever loving shit-load of fantastic and potentially fantastic stuff coming at us.

So tell me Escapist what did you guys think of 2016 overall, and what are you expecting from 2017.

For me the list is almost too long, but to name a few:

Horizon Zero Dawn
Final Fantasy XII Zodiac
Nioh
Nier Automata
EVERY Kingdom Hearts game
Crash Bandicoot Remasters
Mass Effect Andromeda
Tekken 7
South Park Butt whole
Fucking Red Dead 2
Dragon Quest Heroes 1+2 and DragonQuest 11
God of War Dad Verison.

I mean fuck me sideways, if even half of those are good it'll be an awesome year for me.

Ehh there were a couple dope ass indies, like Darkest Dungeon and Stardew Valley, but on a whole I agree with you.
If we're talking Triple AAA then yeah 2017 looks pretty promising. Resident Evil 7 was good (apparently, I haven't played it myself) and I am cautiously optimistic for the new Zelda and Mass Effect and maybe Mario Odyssey if it makes it out this year

I am not even in the slightest bit a Zelda fan, but I do hope the game is good for those people who are excited for it. Fans have been waiting quite a while for a new Zelda Title, hell the series skipped an entire console cycle.

2017 doesn't look that much better. All I can see so far that looks remotely interesting is Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown. Of course, returning to Osea, that's a lot more interesting than it maybe has a right to be. Maybe.

All I'm going to say is that I hope the best comes of Skies Unknown. I'll see you guys in Oured.

Racing and shooters, mostly. I mean, I liked the Mass Effect games but I absolutely oppose the direction BioWare's gone as a company. Really, they've been crap after ME2 came out.

But I'm also a fan of arcade air combat, hence why AC7 has my attention. I've been keeping track of it over on DualShockers. Their coverage of it goes back at least a few months and is pretty extensive. I've known about AC7 going back to Strangereal for a while now. Even better is that they're bringing back major players from the PS2 era AC development teams to work on Skies Unknown.

I'm looking forward to it.

I feel ya, and like what ya like, but FPS all play out the same way to me. I like games with different mechanics, and mechanics that evolve throughout the game. It's very rare that FPS games ever do that.

There's no way God of War releases this year, but you're right 2017 is looking good. I'm easily the most excited about Nioh and so far it's doing really well critically. Looking forward to RDR 2 as well, and I'm sure a couple of great indies will pop up.
