RWBY Volume 2, Episode 1: Best Day Ever [http://roosterteeth.com/archive/?id=9439]

Okay, time for the breakdown. Animation does look a bit better. During normal walking, the joints feel a little off but the character design don't have as sharp an edge as the last volume and look a bit better. Voice work is a mixed bag, some of it works for the characters, other feel flat in delivery so it's left to anyone watching to decide.

This episode however, despite the slight improvements, made me groan and smack my head quicker than expected for two reason, enclosed below in case you haven't watched it yet.

one, WHY IS THERE A GIANT FOOD FIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SCHOOL? Not only does Ruby open with something that looks and sounds like a dragonball proclamation but the whole things feel off tune compared to the previous segment. While the fight is well animated and it is creative in how to turn food into weapons similar to what the teams use, It's just odd in comparison to the big plot supposed to be happening

two, did I hear a reference to RvB with the "like a puma" line? I don't know if it's an accurate indicator of the humor of the show but if they are going to recycle jokes from their other projects, then I have a bad feeling more groaning will come

Ultimatly, I can't pass judgement on the show yet since it's the first episode but i wouldn't get my hopes up

I thought it was pretty great. The food fight scene had me laughing quite a bit. Cinder is appropriately intimidating. The two new villains are interesting, though Emerald got most of the good bits. Not to mention the various ascetic improvements made since season 1. All in all, a really good first episode. Season 1 started off good as well and then faltered a bit around the middle, but we'll just have to see how this goes.

I thought it was a better start.
Everything is set up, more is to come.
The food fight was pretty interesting, it was something more than a food fight. Plus it didn't look like the cliche food fight.

The animation is getting better, uncertain about the voices. The plot is still shaky for me.
The worst thing about it though is the characters. In the first volume they introduced so, so many, when they should have been focusing on the main four and a few of side characters, plus villains. Yet even more are joining both sides, if they get their development, I will be happy.

Also the whole "Funnest day ever" thing at the start made me slap my head, it just sounds like something someone wouldn't do. Still, I am optimistic right now, don't fuck it up, especially to Kerry and Miles! I don't want you guys to be on my shit list any longer, but your writing for the show, Jesus. (Monty is handling enough with the animation, I' betting he doesn't input much with the writing, but only give the "Okay". But he is an animator, not a writer.)

Writing, I beg of you, please be better!

10/10 would watch again. That fight was glorious! I lost my shit at the ridiculousness of it all, so good. The fight choreography is as great as ever.

Roman gets better every time he's on screen as well. Can't wait to see what Cinder and co. have planned for him and the rest of Vale.

Okay, after rewatching the show, my anger has cooled down and I will confess, the food fight was bloody awesome. It was creative, fast paced, with a bit of humor (seriously, poor Ren and Jaune can't catch a break)

I still have concerns about the characters and whether they will actually focus on the main story more instead of all the school stuff

P.S. one small thing that isn't a complaint but why did I see Noel Vermillion in Emerald's design? Maybe it's because of the pistol holsters but I still hope that I don't get that "seen it before" feeling I had with Penny and how similar she was to Nu-13(though, thinking about it, given the lasers, Mu-12 might be better)

Edit: Yeesh, take a look at this, This is the Twitter Feed [https://twitter.com/JesuOtaku] of an anime critic named Hope Chapman. She does work for animenewsnetwork and lets just say that her view on the show is horrible to say the least

Loved it. It seems that they've bypassed that awkward phase of "how do we do anime?" and just started going with their own thing. Wacky humor and action with a rooster teeth twist. Bonus points for actually introducing some sub plot into the mix. The amount of characters is gonna get on my nerves (I'm TERRIBLE with names) but, otherwise, I'm really looking forward to the next episode. And they're apparently all gonna be around the 12 minute mark too.

JUSTICE WILL BE SWIFT, JUSTICE WILL BE PAINFUL, IT WILL BE... DELICIOUS!!

I bloody loved that episode, it was literally the best way to begin the season off, not only was everyone just how they were and that's the reason we love them, but emerald and mercury were absolutely amazing! Especially Mercury, I love his character. I like how Roman is always getting more and more sarcastic and enjoyable every appearance and the cold disturbing voice of Cinder...

Also...

Ok first of all heres a cut down of my opinion of season 1, the big fights were awsome, it had some really good humour and Juane Arc was really well done if a bit cliche and some of the voice acting was good, however a lot of the writing was cheesy as fuck and most of the voice acting was pants and we didnt get enough time with characters to have any serious depth and development and more often than not the animation was pretty meh.

This episode was pretty fucking good. The voice acting was improved in my opinion and it didnt have much of the serious writing which they've been terrible at. Here they really played to they're strengths. I laughed alot and that food fight was really well done. However there was little serious character interaction which is good because they suck at that in this show but is bad because its needed and we need to see if they have improved.

Heh I starting to liked Mercury and Emerald already despite the plain names!
I knew that book scene was going to happened at the start (is that guy suppose to be a reference to Logan aka Wolverine?)
So wait Wukong was really a transfer student well another student from another place? I was under the impression he was just a storeaway.
Was that Pheonix Wright reference of the finger point?
When the hell would a school serve a swordfish even if it is a fancy school???
Sholin Soccer? (The whole whirlwing/ tornado attack)
Hahahaha! Puma!
Ok I laugh at the "Ehh?" reaction
Heh jiggle physic on Emrald (yes I'm a prev)
Ah, Emeral weapon of choice appear to be handguns
Overall I am liking what I have seen so far (mainly Mercury and Emerald). Yes the fight scene was ridiculous but I just rolled with it (like Ozpin reaction).

There goes my respect for her or rather no longer viewing her as cool. Seriously how trollist is her remark which says alot considering that she does review animes.

It was like a safe for work scene of Kill La Kill. Who knew that roast chickens could be a replacement for fighting gloves, sausages for whips and a melon on a pole for a hammer?

They may have trashed the place but they deserve points for resourcefulness.

OT: It was funny, and for an opening episode I think it did the right job of getting me hooked enough to be excited for next weeks episode. The general problems with the series are still there, such as the hit and miss animation, but in a much smaller capacity than before. It's also nice to see a more reasonable episode length.

Did anyone else notice in the food fight that the theme for each character (Ruby to Red like Roses, Wiess to Mirror Mirror, etc.) played as each one joined the fight? Seriously, listen to it closely. The only one that's a bit hard to tell is Yang's "I Burn," but on the rest it's perfect.
