Westerns are not a genre of film I hear much about on this forum, so I was wondering if any of you wonderful people are fans of the genre.

I've only got into them relatively recently, but I love most of the ones I've seen so far. Most of Sergio Leone's so-called spaghetti westerns, a lot of the later Clint Eastwood ones and a few modern ones. I've not yet seen any John Wayne westerns though!

So far I'd say my two favourites are Once Upon a Time in the West and 3:10 to Yuma (the new one) They both utterly absorbed me with their gripping stories, fantastic scenery and quality acting and brilliant soundtracks. Also, thanks to Sergio Leone, I am now obsessed with the music of Ennio Morricone, who did most of the stuff for the Dollars Trilogy, Once Upon a Time (and Inglorious Bastards) as well as many others I'm sure.

So yeah, what western films do you love, what ones dont you love and why? Also, any reccomendations would be good :)

EDIT:

DAMN! I knew I had forgotten something. Namely; The Wild Bunch.

And why has no one mentioned this cornerstone of the Western Genre thus far?!
Escapist, I am dissapoint.

I think I like the genre, I don't love it tho. I've seen The Dollars Trilogy, 3:10 to Yuma, Wyatt Earp, but the best western ever is Maverick!

I love westerns. Watched them a lot at my friend's house when I was younger. Now, my favorite is The Dollar's Trilogy, like most people, and if you haven't seen it you really need to .

Once Upon a Time in the West is one of my all time favorite movies. Unforgiven is another one that is truly amazing.

I've only really seen one and it was really good, it was about a these two guys who moved to californa. After the older one of them hit rich in gold got drunk and stumbled into a auction where this rich guy was selling off one of his wives(Because as soon as that guy got in there everyone suddenly made a law that pologomy was illegal, because back then you apparently can make laws up on the spot as long as everyone agreed) and the old drunk bought her with everything he made. She gets interested in his younger friend however and near the end they two guys married that one girl. Because pologomy was okay as long as it went one women married to x amount of men.

Anywho if anyone knows the name of this movie can you please tell me, wouldn't mind watching it again. It was rather good and pretty funny.

How can you not love anything from Mel Brooks?

I'm not too big a fan of westerns, though I do watch them occasionally. I loved Unforgiven and Tombstone.

Oh yes, Unforgiven is pure class. Ever seen The Outlaw Josey Wales and/or Pale Rider? They're other later Clint Eastwood ones, in a similar vein, and both excellent.

I love westerns even though there are notoriously inaccurate my favs would be

Shane - It's David and Goliath with guns

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - Just a awesome film

Unforgiven - Just watch it

The Proposition - I highly recommend this

Tombstone - Awesome

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - Great movie
I've heard about Shane, but never looked it up. I'll give it a go :)

And god how could I forget that I've seen Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and The Proposition.

God the Proposition was a fucking bleak film. Brilliant though. I loved how absolutely everyone (bar Ray Winstones wife) was a total bastard :) Being in Australia made it even more fascinating in my view :)

By the way, anyone seen The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford?

Some love it, others hate it. Personally I think it's Brad Pitt's best film, all the acting is top notch, the cinematography is perfect and I dont think it drags at all, whatever others might say. I was pretty much crying by the end of it.

Here be the trailer:

Truly a wonderful film.

Sadly no I haven't seen as many westerns as I would have liked to.

I saw the first half of that but it was far too slow for my tastes (and I like slow films).

Another western I liked was Destry Rides Again which was a fun lightharted and fairly early western, it's not grat but It's certainly enjoyable.

I actually quite like westerns. 3:10 to Yuma I thought was really good. I've seen most of the Clint Eastwood films along time ago and recently I managed to see High Plains Drifter which I also found enjoyable.

It's a genre no one seems to mention much anymore sadly.

I like modern westerns. I can't stand any western that's over 15 years old, because they're all carrying the same overused western plot with glorious and handsome cowboys lassoing up all the obligatorily bad guys. I find that movies like 3:10 to Yuma are a good break from the western plot, taking use of the chaoticness of the time and giving just a simple but different action setting.

I just watched that the other day! I usually don't watch old westerns, but i took special interest in this since I'm actually related to Jesse James. I liked Pitt in that one.

Holy shit he did! I knew it sounded familiar, and I figured Tarantino was just doing an homage to those films, but I didn't think they got the man himself to do it. That is awesome. When it comes to westerns, I love them but haven't seen too many. (paradox I know) I loved the Dollars trilogy, as well as Unforgiven, and I still need to see Once Upon A Time in the West, Assassination of Jesse James, The Proposition, etc. So, I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the suggestions in here.

They are one of the two styles of movies I can't stand... the other being fantasy like Lord of the Rings... I honestly don't know why, but those kinds of movies bore me.

Have you ever seen "Life Stinks"? Yeah... it was pretty bad...
