Yes, I know this might be one of those topics that everyone talks about, that and the Overrated games.
BUT this is not my intention, even though if you want to talk about it is ok. So I always said that Ghostbusters the game, was really underrated, but I think it might be overlooked more that underrated.

So I buy a lot of used games or new but old games that look interesting to me, some games I haven't played yet, because I'm playing other game and I want to finish it or I don't want to play that kind of game at that moment.

About 2 days ago I said, F'it I want to play one of those games I have a lot time with it and I grabbed Wolfenstein, the one that came out in 2009, man that game is really underrated. I haven't heard anyone talked about that game AT ALL. It's published by Activition and it has a better engine than COD, I mean the grenades make a disaster, the aiming is not auto aim but it's very easy to aim on consoles.

I actually have made Topics here to ask you what game should I played and a lot of people ignored that title.

I have been comparing this game to COD, because is published by the same company and I'm amazed how old that game is and it's better in a lot of things.

Anyway, Have you played a game that you really really REALLY think it's underrated, overlooked or maybe obscure?

There's an old game by Origin called CyberMage: Darklight Awakening. It's a cyberpunk FPS-RPG that was way ahead of its time when it came out, yet very few people know about it.

I never saw anyone mention it.

Actually, I've recently been playing through the Escape From Butcher Bay section of The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, and it's pretty fantastic. It's got a great mixture of stealth and shooting and melee combat that is pretty difficult but also rather meaty, along with some truly great level design that manages to take the corridor-nature of modern first-person games and combine it with the exploration and logical thinking that older RPGs would require of the player to continue, because there aren't any quest arrows or anything. Granted, it doesn't really get too labyrinthine to navigate, but I've certainly spent more time simply exploring and getting to know the area than most other games these days.

It's "underrated" in the same way that Okami or Disgaea are, I suppose, in that they were received extremely well by critics and fans alike, but nobody ever actually played the games.

Primal for PS2.
Awesome game, great writing and fun gameplay. The game had its faults (the rushed ending comes to mind), but I loved the crap out of it when it came out. I've never heard others mention it, though.

Bulletstorm, maybe?

I'm not actually sure how that game was received. It certainly got forgotten pretty damn quick.

Anyway, I loved it. It's just so utterly free of pretension. I mean, it's a shooter where you can get extra points for shooting enemies in the crotch. It has a scene involving a robotic T-Rex with eye lasers named Waggleton P. Tallylicker. There's a gun that shoots giant drills that pin enemies to walls and make their bodies spin around like a serial killer's ceiling fan.

If nothing else, whenever someone accuses me of being a stuck up twat who doesn't understand what fun is and needs to shut up about story and character in games, I can just tell them that I enjoyed Bulletstorm

Well there's Metal Arms Glitch in the System:

Fantastic game that was supposedly going to have a few sequels. But the company who made the game got bought out I believe. Shame.

Also, War of the Monsters:

I think this gameplay footage speaks for itself.

I never really thought of it as underrated, but when it popped up in a recent topic almost no one seemed to have heard of the series which in my mind is a damned shame since it's brilliant. The game and series in question?

Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic

An excellent little game from a few years back that deftly combined elements from the Civilization series and the Heroes of Might & Magic series into a creamy delicious bit of awesome. Take the large scale turn based elements of the Civ series where you're establishing cities, trading and brokering deals with rival factions, and waging grand scale war then combine it with the fantastical races, plethora of monsters, rpg heroes and leveling, loot hunting, and magic system of Heroes. It's beautiful!

I really enjoyed the combat as well. It zooms in on battles ala Total War series, although the battles are turn based and on a much smaller scale. Still it had a great feel to it and felt nicely tactical. When I lost I never felt cheated, meanwhile holding a city with a handful of archers against a massive horde is nearly as satisfying here as in the TW series, maybe even moreso since the TW series AI is notoriously bad at sieges.

And again, magic, this game did it really well with some spells that truly felt epic in scale. You aren't just some petty wizard, you're casting spells that change the entire map. Something just incredibly cool about seeing the landscape of the map changing as your (Or your enemies) magic spreads while grand cities are covered by giant protective magical domes.

Fatal Frame 2:
It's like Silent Hill 2, but with a chick...and no weapons, minus a camera, and REALLY REALLY Japanese.

Deadly Creatures:
Play as either a scorpion or a spider.
While the game play is kind of simple, the whole 'seeing the word from the eyes of shit that scares most humans' is pretty cool.
The story is actually told via listening to 'not really seen' human characters.

Legend of Kage 2:
Like the old school Ninja Gaiden, but easier (most of the time). Great art, graphics, story and a fairly complex magic system. Add in two characters that play differently enough to justify playing through both 'stories' and you have one of the best games Square has put out in YEARS.

(Naval Ops Series) Warship Gunner 2:
Think Armored Core (but not as fucking slow, most of the time) with page after page after page of upgrades and ships types.
Play as everything from some little Currier to a submarine to an Aircraft Carrier and a story that's ripped out of the Ace Combat games, and you've got one of the most under looked games on the PS2.
The sales of this game were just plan shameful.

Baroque:
While this game does nothing to prepare you and, lets face it, the story you pretty much accidentally bump into, that's one of the reason you keep coming back. A tower that never seems to end, great character and monster designs, haunting music, difficulty that goes from a walk in the park to a walk in the hurricane, this game is just an odd kind of fun.
A total throwback to dungeon crawlers like Diablo or Planscape: Torment, no game is ever exactly the same.
Add to it the fact that dieing actually makes you progress, and you've got one weird but fun game.

I always say this when this topic comes up .

Alpha protocol . It has it's flaws , but this game is so fun . Seriously the game is amazin if unpolished . A diamond in the rough if you will . It has .

Good stealth .
Funny dialogue .
Fun gameplay.
Multiple paths in levels .
Challenge .
Decision that matter and alter gameplay .

If only a few of the kinks were ironed out beforehand , this game would have been GOTG ( Game of this generation ).

Honorable mention goes to . Alan wake . I swear no one talks about this amazingly written game .

Phantasy Star Portable 1 and 2. They are the best portable games i played by far! Combat is fun, loot, customization. Woks well on portable as side missions pretty short so if you need to kill 10-15 mins you just do a side quest. Got more time? Do a story mission. perfect!

Played and finished that this christmas although I actually purchased it on release I never got around to playing it until recently I thought it was ok the combat however was atrocious I agree its underated now because most people dont remember it but back in the day that game was hyped quite a bit and failed to live up to its promises. However it did get slated more than I think it deserved probably due to the backlash so yeah in a way it was underated because marketing overated it.

I would go with Valkyria Chronicles simply because you never hear anything about it really its just one of those games everybody bypassed a bit like Okami on release but it is such a fantastic game it seems most people who actually try it enjoy it myself included and I usually dislike strategy type games especially squad based ones. I dont think its underated by those who have played it more that its just a generally unknown game that despite getting good reviews has had little coverage in the media and only a little more by word of mouth.

I loved Deadly Creatures, but I would never have bought if not for a combination of finding it randomly in a bargain bin and hearing it was better than you'd assume.

I found it, Little King's Story and Disaster: Day of Crisis in a 3 for $30 sale. Disaster is also an interesting somewhat underrated beast. It's about 3 or 4 different bad games in different genres stapled together that somehow manages to be better than the sum of its parts.

Every James Bond game for PS2. Agent Under Fire, Nightfire, From Russia with Love, Everything or Nothing, and...hm well actually Goldeneye Rogue Agent kind of sucked. The other ones were great though.

If you have an Original Xbox then you absolutely need to get these games. If you don't have an original Xbox then these are the two best reasons to get one.

Otogi: Myth of Demons has you playing through 29 levels as Raikou; a resurrected warrior who must purify those stages by saving souls and exercising demons, monsters, yokai, etc. To save souls, you have to BREAK EVERYTHING. A big draw of this series is the fact that you can destroy just about every structure by using light attacks, heavy attacks, magic and/or, flinging enemies into those structures.

Otogi 2 features 46 levels counting a level 0. I haven't played as much of this game as I have the original (I haven't beaten either sadly) but the second seems to be more finely tuned in some ways. For example, the magic in Otogi 2 is a lot more devastating to the environment and impressive to behold than in the original. Furthermore it seems like you don't need to charge up to unleash large magical attacks. This could be attributed to different characters using magic though (that reminds me, Otogi 2 has multiple playable characters).

A staple of the Otogi...games are the dynamic boss fights. Some bosses are larger than life but there are a handful of bosses that are roughly the same size as your player-character and seem to operate within the same rules as you do: almost like a fair fight. It's something I don't recall seeing in many beat-em-ups, spectacle fighters, etc.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Brutal Legend- EA really fucked up the marketing of that game so everyone was surprised when it turned out to have rts elements. I think that is part of the reason it got so much review hate early on, everyone was expecting a brawler, not an rts. Frankly I really enjoyed the stage battles in it and thought they were allot of fun but I can understand if some people were turned off by them, they game didn't do a great job of explaining them.

Hostile Waters- I'm not even sure the best way to explain this game aside from the fact that it is awesome and available on gog.com, go buy it. http://www.gog.com/gamecard/hostile_waters_antaeus_rising

Same with PTO IV. Its based in the same world and started the Warship Gunner and Commander games. Its more strategic than the other games, but great none the less. I just wish I could convince Koei to release these games on PC.

Folklore for PS3. Shin Megami Tensei meets God of War-lite. Phenomenal use of Sixaxis. Gorgeous art direction. Excellent use of symbolism. Unfortunately has the DMC4 flaw of requiring each level be completed twice.

Pokemon Colosseum and XD for Gamecube. Pokemon first instance of dark and edgy, to an extent; it is still Pokemon after all. Full 3D gameplay. You catch Pokemon by stealing them from other trainers....ya.

Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy for PS2. Bog standard Zelda clone. WITH 5 TIMES THE AWESOME! The puzzle sections with the mummy are ridiculously clever and the over-world/dungeon sections with Sphinx surpass most Zelda titles on combat fluidity alone.

I'm going to ignore the way the words 'underrated' and 'overrated' are being thrown about with reckless abandon, since these words are so misused they mean little to nothing.
I'm going to say maybe the new SSX. Sure it was nothing compared to the old ones, but it was still fun to play. Also Brutal Legend, that was a really fun game with a great setting. I never see either of these mentioned.
